Finest Fights

Welcome to Finest Fights. A channel dedicated to video game boss fight design. Bosses are often the most memorable and engaging parts of any video game. A truly spectacular boss will stick with you for years, and completely change the way you remember a game. That's why we are taking a tour of some of the best ones ever made. On each episode, we will carefully dissect the gameplay, context and design concepts that makes that particular fight stand out. The goal is to create a series that celebrates bosses of all types from all over the video game landscape.

    The Corrupt Heart (Or Heart of Darkness, as i thought it was called) is definitely one of the hardest fights I've seen, but is actually only my second favorite literal heart of pure evil in fiction (Darkest Dungeon's final fight, if you haven't covered it, definitely has a place here, too). The heart is designed to be cheese-proof, and the first time I saw that +50 strength instantly punched through a 999 barricade that, unfortunately, never got Body Slam. I at least TRY to fight the Heart every run, but only about one in three decks actually break it, though, weirdly, Ascenion level 13 was beaten by a Grand Finale/Mirror Image infinite combo deck. This is actually a really good thing bc it means that the Heart will always feel like an earned victory because it cannot be cheesed, but you can still pull out a masterpiece going-infinite deck and shatter it into a thousand pieces.

    The insane mode Necromancer Is the ultimate skill check in any game I've ever played , the boss itself is roughly as strong you are but that's not why I'd say that he's the ultimate skill check , the enemies he revives during wave 2 specifically challenge you to learn how to do all variants of Juggling your enemy due to the 3 weigh classes and the beefies actively punish you for trying to hide in the sky , wave 1 is hard as well but it is so easy to die to this boss because the enemy's move very fast and hit so hard , this is much harder during wave 2

    Video suggestion: Memes aside, the Sans encounter in Undertale has to be my all-time favorite boss fight. It's just an incredibly clever and inventive fight, somehow managing to surprise even at the end of a game that was filled to the brim with subversive mechanics. Couple that with its brutal (but fair) difficulty, the emotional impact of the moment and a killer soundtrack, and I think the fight well earns its notoriety.

    I'm a year late but... sengoku rance, xavier first fight. Unlike the usual 6 party limit, this boss fight tests your current commander list and understanding of mechanics by shifting out fallen party members with ones still standing. If you only invested in 1 pokemon, you're not going to make it through this fight without asking the game to put you on babymode on the gameover screen, which doesn't lock you out of the game but does take away from your score total if you're aiming for a highscore. It's the first time I really bumped into a problem in the game bc on the first run, the enemies only attack you once per turn so you only need two teams - one for offense one for defense. Any extra members can sort of become a t2 attack team but it's not necessary. However, as the difficulty raises the enemies start hitting multiple times or story beats can stretch your army thinner. It's not exactly a big brain 4x strat game but rewarding knowledge of understanding your character list AND how it's a very character driven story really feeds back into itself from a mechanics perspective. NotOK/10 would play again and again. Really memerable characters. Felt like playing pkmn.

    I would love to see your take on the trope of the "roaming elite enemy in a beginner zone" like the black knights in dark souls. Bosses that test your knowledge on a first playthrough and make repeat playthroughs extra interesting

  • @asmahasmalaria8596
    @asmahasmalaria859623 күн бұрын

    I don't think time eater is that bad honestly. Sure he's a hard counter for combo decks, but his stats and attacks are weak enough that you can still win relatively easily if you have a good strategy. Donu and Deca can go f themselves for hard countering any decks with less than completely absurd damage though.

    That isnt slay the spires most difficult boss, Time Eater is. I have walked over the Heart everytime i reached it, Time Eater has ended the vast majority of all my runs and if Time Eater shows up in a run you are building to fight the heart its game over just restart.

    I personally have way more issues with The Awoken than Time Eater. Time Eater just asks you to be mindful of what cards you play and avoid anything that doesn't offer significant value. The Awoken attacks relentlessly requiring block generation on every turn and tears any build reliant on playing Powers to shreds.

    Long story short: - In a game all about buffs and debuffs the most uses said skills. - challenging but ot impossible. - has anti cheese protection while allowing for some hard to assemble strategies to work against it. - devs made sure the battle ends by adding a fair time limit that will kill the player no matter what.

    I love the heart fight, I'm still preatty new to the game, but every time I face him is tense, today I had a defect run were I had a good build, but it took time to get going, I got to like 12 HP playing as best as I could when I finally got my engine going and them I almost jumped from the chair, I got like 1000 armor by the end of the fight

  • @wesnohathas1993

    One of my favorite facets about the Heart fight is that, every once in a while, you string together the *perfect* set of deck and relic syngergies such that even the most difficult fight in the entire game becomes an absolute cakewalk. I had a Prismatic Shard Ironclad run once, where I got Dual Wield, Juggernaut, Talk to the Hand, and Barricade - I was generating so much block each turn and dealing such an obscene amount of damage that I ended the fight before I even finished setting up my block scaling by infinitely copying Talk to the Hand with Dual Wield. It was glorious.

    My most distinct memory of this fight was watching one of my friends reach it, with a defensive Defect deck focused on weathering hits while slowly dealing damage, stacking up Powers with Hello World to win a slow fight. Then the Corrupt Heart buffed strength by 50 (to like +65?) and went for the 24 strike attack. it was really funny

  • @axeltheinternetsweeper8082

    That attack is my favourite part about heart It's like the heart tell you "Yeah those Turns are nice , catch these 65×12 won't you?" Making some slow deck (by slow i mean EXTREMELY SLOW) mostly dead against it

    That last clip of the watcher gaining 68 block with 90 damage headed their way and only 19 hp... RIP...Except wait! The heart only has 33 HP left and will take 3 damage for every 6 it deals meaning it dies in 11 hits! So they only had to eat 66 damage before winning. Sooooo clutch!!
