The competition back then isn’t what it is today. Yamashita retired just as the sport was becoming more global and the talent, training and knowledge exploded. He’s a legend still of course. Royce Gracie dominated early ufc with only jiujitsu. No one knew how to counter his moves. We know he couldn’t possibly dominate the same way against today’s mma fighters.

A wrestler is used to training without caring about protecting his neck from choking and his hands from breaking, so it is natural for a judoka to excel in submission moves. However, we must acknowledge that wrestlers possess tremendous physical strength that surpasses that of a judoka.

I really think, as a former Judoka with years of trainning and study, this is nonsense. REAL JUDO KODOKAN, is about avoiding any kind of fight, by TAI SABAKI or IRIMI. Unfortunately, as a good will of Japanese (after WW II) JUDO become ocidentalized as a SPORT instead of a MARTIAL ART. A soft way (JU = Soft and DO = Way) to be a Honorable Warrior, not a Fighter. In a fight, the Universal Principle of Mutual Benefit, disapears and one only think of winning the fight.

I mean, we're just animals. Only a small fraction of us obey rules because we understand and agree with the reasoning behind rules. The vast majority obey rules for fear of punishment, if they obey them at all. At least this way you know which individuals are reconstructed and self-possessed (mastery) and which are just faking it (subordinate to their emotions, like any other ape).

I have immense respect for wrestlers at all levels. NCAA wrestlers are a nightmare to deal with as they're fast, powerful, cardio for days and tough. The problem is it's an unfair comparison. If both in gi the wrestler gets smoked. Judoka use the gi as a weapon and a tool and the wrestler doesn't. The judoka is allowed to do things that the wrestler doesn't do and has more tools- wrestlers don't do an inside sweep like Kari ashi (foot sweep) to say morete seio-nage (shoulder throw). NCAA only allows a hammer lock to quarter-wing position so not as severe as judo locks or chokes which NCAA wrestlers can't use in their sport. Judo vs BJJ is a much more fair comparison.

This is what is good in Judo if you are big and heavy you can win most Judo Champions are big hence heavy. Compare a Judo champion who is a light weight and heavy weight and of the same Judo ability, the later have the greater possibility to win.

@@saintoflastresorts2272 That is the problem, if a big and heavy player will have a randori with a smaller and lighter, the later is no amount to the big nd heavy guy. even in the same weight category, the taller can have a bit of advantage because it drag-up the smaller one who can also use his smallness to stumble the other using his body as a leverage. but mostly, the bigger and heavier ones usually have the greater advantage.
