Yes it's a speedmaster 25 not a talica 25.
WHY WONT HE SAY THE MODEL OF THE CALSTAR ROD?!!!?!??!!?!?!?!?
I can smell the weed through the screen
When is going to be the trip?
The best color for Wahoo is fast!
Hey Steve! Love your presence on the forums, sport shows, and on KZread! Was curious if flylining this with a fluorocarbon leader of 30-40lb during the daytime is possible? I was hoping to bring less rod/reel tackle and just use the Penn VISX 16 during both the day and night.
What size hook bud
Would it be better to use a 30lb leader on a heavier outfit (60-80lb for example) instead of using a true 30lb outfit? With the larger rig you’ll have more line capacity
Several drawbacks: most notably the heavier braid and much heavier spool of the larger reel will restrict the bait's swimming ability. Heavier rod makes it more likely that the relatively small hook will pull out. Also, the heavier rod won't flex much, which is part of the key in tiring the fish out with the fairly light drag.
Hey Steve. Would the 6’6 30-80 be a good rod. Not sure if that was the length you suggested. It shows as a trolling rod but???? Short and stout to pull on the yo-yo fish. Thanks.
It would be an excellent choice for yo-yo fishing. Assuming you mean the 6-6 30-80 Carnage III "West Coast" model, its working title during development was "Panga Special".
Thanks for the quick reply!! Yes it is a west coast model. Glad I picked wisely. One of the many Penn rod setups I picked up this season from your suggestions. Your short and to the point tackle tip Thursday's are great. I’ll give it a slow troll shot as well. 👍
Hawkk tauh that thang
I really enjoy your videos. What knot do you use to connect the leader to the jig?
In most cases, the San Diego Jam is my terminal knot of choice.
Been using izorline first string on our charter boat for 30 years, have not found a better line. The copolymer seems as abrasion resistant as flouro, and knot strength is amazing. Unfortunately, cant buy in NZ any longer, so I order bulk spools from charkbait in the USA
Has anyone tried PENN REGIMENT II Popping sin 2.45 50g-100g ? I want to fish small tunas with it
Is that the same for anchovies and sardines
Hope your shogun trip went well.
Thats what im talking bout
Good video Steve. Can you do a video comparing the penn carnage rail, boat, & west coast rods while showing them side by side. Penn website is terrible (sorry.) 🍻
Steve your information and techniques are priceless thanks for always sharing your knowledge with the Searcher Crew!
Can't say enough about those Penn fathoms....lol just got back from a 2 day on the lo ann and watched the deckhand max land a 230lb blufin on a fathom 40....50# that lil reel was quivering and twisting lol handle came a Lil loose....but man.....230lb bruiser is no f'n joke....couldn't believe it
What are your thoughts on the thicker Owner treble hook impeding the action of the jig? Especially on the smaller jigs (60 or 80 gram)
On the very small jigs, you are just using a #1 treble, not that thick, but still stronger than what they come with from the factory.
What size hooks did you replaced with?
Hook sizes depend on the jig size, anything from a #1 to a #2/0 is the usual.
@@tunanorth thank you
Years ago before the bluefin were close and most of the local trips were targeting yellowfin and skipjack I remember using coltsnipers for them, but casting them like a surface iron and just ripping them back after letting them sink a bit. Does that work on bluefin when they’re boiling or when people talk about fishing coltsnipers for bluefin are they generally talking about fishing them vertically?
That definitely works when the fish are right up on top or in a foamer.
@@tunanorth awesome thanks, when the chances at fish are few and far between I’m hesitant to throw anything other than the norm sometimes, I’ll give it a shot again with the bluefin🤙🏼
What size owner hook would you use for these little guys
usually a #1 to a #2/0.
Is the fathom 15ld2 really capable of 30-80 pound tuna on a flyline? I checked and all the specs seem good except the drag is kinda low. Could you maybe share some personal experience on what you think about the reels effectiveness and capabilities?
No I wouldn't want to hook anything over 50. You need a 30 or 40 for this type of fishing
The reel is absolutely capable, but should only be used in those exceptional circumstances when the fish won't bite otherwise. Short version: set the "Strike" drag at 8 pounds, let them run [remember that you have 400 yards of line]. If you actually get spooled, the fish was likely over 75 pounds. Get as much line back in "high" as you can get, while the fish rests. The fish will probably make another very long run against 8 pounds of drag. After that, bump the drag to 10 pounds, and keep getting back as much line as you can. Once the fish is "straight up and down", you can bump the drag to 12 pounds, and drop the reel to "Low". All of this depends on fresh line, and properly tied knots.
@@tunanorth thanks!
Feel free to ask follow up questions!
What Rod are you using with FTH30 fir the dart jigs?
PENN Carnage III "West Coast" model; 8 footer rated 30-60.
I think 7’6 is the longest 30-60?
@@mnomad9173 CARWCIII3060C80
Is a Penn fathom 15 really capable of that they seem to have low drag max 20? And if your flylining you would probably only get about 17 on sunset without locking out the spool.
Correct. In general, you will set the Strike Drag at 8 lbs, and Full at 10 lbs., which allows you to go to 14-15 at Sunset if necessary, which is the absolute highest you would ever go with 30 lb. line.
Do people still use treble hooks for yellowtail when fishing live mackerel?
An old trick from the days when boats used to anchor up at the Coronado Islands. Due to the sea lion population explosion, it is no longer practical.
Steve I enjoy all your videos, especially from the deck of a sport boat. Wondering, What’s the name of that Wahoo bomb with spinner in the video.
How many rod/reel setups do these boats allow you to bring onboard? Or is there a suggestion?
Depends on the trip length and what the target species are. I'd suggest calling the specific boat you plan on going fishing with.
I picked up a fathom 15ndl2 black from australia loaded it up with 350yds of 30lb suffix blue camo with a small space for about 50 feet of 25lb topshot for a stealthy tuna rig. Also just picked up a penn torque 15xnld and loaded it to the brim with 425yds of 40lb blue camo suffix. Going to be fishing that one with a 15 to 25ft 30# flourocarbon leader. Cant wait to hook up on some bft. The 15xnld does have a bit more line capacity. They are close though.
Best on 30# was a 55lb albacore tuna that took me down to two wraps left on the spool of my spinning reel. It won me the jackpot that trip out of Morro Bay back about 30 yrs ago. Brought back a great memory! Thanks!
I’m right handed but I’ve always fish with my Rod on my right side I have to try this option always willing to try new techniques and learning different ways
You gotta love this guy, he sweats experience.
What about a video about different tackle bags for different trip lengths?
Doesn't seem like the bait would be to lively attached directly to the main line. I wonder if using a dropper loop would give the bait more freedom to swim around?
It is a bit "counter intuitive", but is extremely effective.
The rubber band method gets tangled, so the bait can't move with the line shortened by being tangled. Hmmm... the bait has zero line to move with the drop-shot method. 😅
Steve, Is this more effective than the rubber band method?
It gives more precise depth control, which when the fish are deep is very important. Also tangles less.
You Da man Steve! Thanks
Thank you for the tips they very helpful ❤
I only use these guys and have for years. He's right though definitely make a reservation! They are busy
When I was taught this by a deckhand, I was told you use odd numbers of twist. 3/5/7
Interesting. If you look in many knot books, it shows this knot with only two turns, which may be OK for trout etc, but not nearly strong enough for SW species. Probably three would be sufficient in many cases, but four adds just a bit of extra margin, especially if you are going to "clip" one of the legs as shown in the other video. In line this heavy, five just will not tighten up properly.
I have a Penn fathom 40nld2 For dropper loop and knife jigs a fathom 25 for flyline and now I’m thinking of getting a fathom 15xnld2. What line would be best to have on my fathom 25nld2 I currently have 350 yards of 50 pound braid with maybe a 30 yard mono top shot. Do you think 65 would be better I ideally want to be able to fish my fathom for tuna 50-110 pound range on the flyline. The 25 couples with the 15xnld2 for 20-70 pounders would cover pretty much everything flyline related leaving only my Tranx 300 for dorado and small yellowtail. So what line do you think is best for both my fathom 15 and 25 and what they are capable of. Thanks man
I generally like my braid to be one "level" heavier than my topshot.
O.K. on the 'Search er' what is your terminal knot to the jig? Also on your jig examples I think I saw some with double rings (solid or split ?) and or with heavy duty snaps (clips). Is that what I saw and if so why and when?
Great video Steve We used similar techniques in the Gulf of Mexico for Mutton & Cuberra snapper. I’m old school and still hot rod my Senator reels with Newell kits. I have just acquired my first Yellow Tail Special” reel from the west coast.
Feel free to ask follow up questions.
Great Video Steve! My first reel was A Penn 500 Jig Master. Paid $19.00 for it in 1972 had to cut A lot of lawns for that.
we all have forgotten about yellowtail do the pesky bft,
yessir did this on the trip with in tanners bank when the water was rough
Some people call this the knocker rig
