If a motor sits a lot those vanes can take a permanent set and the material gets hard. Pamper that etec…….there are no more coming. This was a good video. When I was doing thus for the first time, I had to watch 5 of them to assemble enough information. Yours is pretty clear.

So, besides KITTY!, thanks for the video. The tip to use a ladder to support the lower unit was easily worth the price of admission. I would say, the instructions with the kit state to insert the impeller key and slide down the impeller to trap it before mounting the driveshaft. I did it as listed, and it took seconds, just needing a tap on a 2x4 to completely seat the impeller over the key. Secondly, when torquing a set of fasteners, one shouldn't work clockwise or counterclockwise, but in a diagonally opposed fashion. Doing it as you did will allow the housing to flex, and result in inconsistently tight fasteners. If numbered 1-6 in a clockwise fashion, I torqued 1-4-6-3-2-5. I went around a second time, and nothing moved.

Thank you for the video. Why were you changing the thermostat? Other springs mentioned?

  • @robgrasso1605

I run it in saltwater so I figured it was time to inspect the thermostat. The other springs in the water pump kit are for earlier etecs pre 2011 I believe. You won’t need the springs for newer etec water pumps

@@robgrasso1605 My instructions said for 2010 and newer models, the impeller and springs should be replaced as a set. The springs go in the thermostat. Thanks for the video.

Thank you so much for sharing, I live in Norway. The prise of an regular 300h service including the impeller change is close to 1/3 of the price of a brand new engine. Thank you again, this is very useful.

Hide is inaccessible. Chase was in conflict about offering his trained final response, hence resulting in some predatory drift. Good job paying that interest and commitment on his part.

Nice video. Did this same job 2 years ago. About time to do it again. Yep!...Getting that shift pin fed back through and the cotter pin back in is def the tricky part. (I did not remove the carb). I did shove a shop towel down below the linkage in and around the "black hole" first, which saved me from losing the tiny parts a couple of times. Also, after loosening the lower bolts, I positioned the motor vertically. The lower unit slid down perfectly, stable on the ground, made it easy to change out the gasket and impeller and reassemble. Thank you.

Engine was hard to start when I got it and last person said it was tip-top so I knew I was going to be cleaning the carb and changing the thermostat so it was already more convenient for me to remove the carb, but thanks for noting, that will save a step on the next time I change. I think every two years is a good schedule to change impeller. I have a 30hp etec that needs that done, so maybe a video on that.

The impeller move's in only one direction. If your in reverse gear the engines rotation is the same as if you were in forward gear, if you think about how the gearbox works.

I would also liked to have seen it running after the install, to see what kind of force of flow I should expect from mine. Mine flows but compared to my Honda 50, not nearly as fast. Parts are on order to do this job, and your video is a big help. Thanks much!

Could be the impeller but they usually still stream or spit a little water, you can always try to clear the line out the outlet port on the casing. If been sitting they can clog up and not enough force to clear them out. A small piece of wire usu does the trick.
