As someone wanting to transition from a rapid-prototype environment to a more formal environment.. perhaps not for FAA/FDA/DOE approval, but to develop high quality/safe products for any industry.. aerospace (Lockhead's SEAL Level X, Boeing , DDPMAS etc) , Medical, or Nuclear industries, would love to see a trivial example that goes shows all the steps and outputs. Having a documented process on how code is generated is one thing, but how do you prove safety? Static Analysis, Code Coverage (Statement (Level C), Decision (Level B), MCDC (Level A)) ? Who defines the unit tests? I imagine there are differences between FAA : DO-178X , DO 331 , ARP4754A , ED-12C FDA : 13485 , ISO14971 , IEC 62304 , SaMD and DOE : 414.1x, but what are the typical tools/software needed, and the typical document/artifacts in the various stages of the software life cycle? I saw a good video by CEMILAC Education Program "Airborne Software Development & Certification Process" and it's a bit overwhelming: Requirement Management - (IBM Ration) DOORS, JAMA, Xebrio, rmtoo florath , doorstop-dev / doorstop , reqview Static Source Code Analysis - Parasoft, PolySpace, CodeSonar, horusec , sonar cloud, veracode PREFast Dynamic Analysis / Modified Condition/Decision Coverage (MC/DC) - VectorCAST, RapiTest Configuration Management / Storage and Version Control System - Git, SourceSafe, Mercurial, MS TFS QA - Helix ALM V&V - VectorCAST, LDRA Testbed Test Automation - Mathworks Simulink DO Qualification Kit Continuous Integration / CD - Continuous Delivery/Deployment And what is the general attitude towards open source software (ex. FreeRTOS) and code-generation tools (ex. ST's Cube MX)? How do CPLD and FPGAs fit in to the picture.. since not exactly software, but they are programmable devices written in an programming language like VHDL , (system) verilog?

Never, ever expect that employers will thank you.. do what you should do .. and that is it. No one is thankful for the extra work you do. It is just your body that will hate you at the end. and you hate your body also .. because you will not be able to enjoy your life anymore of pain .. all kind of pains.

With AI's current state, I don't think it will be much longer before software engineering becomes significantly easier. This will inevitably either lower wages, or number of people actively employed. I do believe we will see software engineers suffer due to AI in the near future. Since embedded involves hardware, it will be more difficult for AI to have the same impact. It WILL impact embedded eventually, but it should be slower

According to what you say at, 8:11 my question is, how much electronics should I know ? Well im not an electronic engineer and am not much interested in it. I am only a computer science student and have no idea what physics and electronics are. Can I be an embedded system engineer who has skipped the electronic part ?

For an embedded software engineer, you might wanna know how a voltage divider works, how to limit current on a gpio, what does Pull-up/Pull-down resistors and overview of basic R, L, C if you are going to deal with ADC, signal processing(can get ugly if you probe too deep).

Greetings, I would like to ask your advice: I am a circuit engineer, PCB designer, 5 years experience, and I am generally interested in embedded development, but so far I have little understanding of embedded systems programming and would like to dive into this topic. It's important for me to transition to remote work once I reach a certain level of experience in this area, can you please advise me if this is possible in embedded development even if it would be completely necessary to transition into programming? Or maybe to achieve this goal it would be worth delving into a higher level topic in programming in IoT topics or something similar? Thanks in advance!

"you don't need a degree.. I wish I had gone to school to learn this" 😂 Embedded and real time firmware systems really do need a high level of understanding including the instructions that architecture, hardware architecture, and how they interact with certain programming features that you won't get through informal or self-taught methods.

The most satisfying part of being an embedded software engineer for over 30 years? Seeing something I've worked on for sale in a shop, or even better watching somebody use it. You also get to play with great gadgets: I had a camera phone before they were available on the market because I was working on it and testing it at weekends! I could tell you what my latest gadgets are but that might get me fired/sued ;-) I sort-of agree with the remote working thing but the upside is you're a lot more likely to get to travel. I spent much of my 20s crossing the Atlantic just because I was the young guy who didn't have any home commitments and could jump on a plane with a few hours' notice. Downsides: yes, I get the "thinking about it at the weekend" thing. Even whilst asleep at night! Also you're constantly pushing boundaries with the hardware and trying to make the impossible... possible! Sometimes that doesn't work out which is a disappointment.

Its not an illusion. Processes spend most of their time waiting for IO, so switching among tasks is a good idea.
