  He cut the fuel to the engine. I am not sure what they are flying, but something tells me they can't restart that one in flight.

  The left lever controls how open the air intake is, and controls how much power the engine is creating, whereas the right lever controls how much fuel is being injected in the engine. This is important to reduce when the plane is stationary because you need a lower fuel:air ratio in order to help start the propellers when the engine is cold, and because less air is entering the engine due to the plane not moving. While in flight/when the engine is hot, reducing the left lever will make the plane slow down. Reducing the right lever will flatout cut the engine off.
