Having got hooked on all aspects of restoring and collecting gramophones and phonographs in the summer of 2013 I thought I'd pull it together on internet details of my collection, the music I'm collecting and the restoration information I'm accumulating. I offer it here and on my web site for interest and guidance.

The lid from a 101 is shallower and not as rounded on the corners with corner protectors. Take a look on my Graham-ophones site. The difference will be obvious. Finally, don't forget, I can't see your gramophone so am in the dark, so to speak on, when it comes to making suggestions.

Whoops! Of course I mean a lid from a 101 will not match a lid from a 102

There is a section on my Restore-A-Gram site on restoring the cases of portables. Have a look at that. It talks about initial cleaning and getting the colour back. The example I use is a blue case the same procedure applies to black. The only thing I would add is that in very bad cases I use a shoe dye but thus is very rare. Usually the shoe cream shown is sufficient. Regarding the case being out of alignment. It sounds as if it has warped, possibly due to where it has been stored. It's common for gramophones to be left in out houses, lofts, sheds etc where they may experience wide variations in temperature. These variations can cause the case to warp. Sadly I have never been able to get a warped case back into shape. You could try emptying the case and, using weights, re align the top snd bottom but it would then have to stand for a long time and it's doubtful it would ever go back. No, a lid from a 102 will not match a 102 case. Best regards

Hi, I have just subscribed to your channel. I would like to ask you a couple of questions about the HMV 102. What is the best method to clean a black casing and is there a preferred way to re blacken it ? Also I have a 102 that the lid doesn't line up when closed with the base, I thought maybe it had been dropped and the hinge was bent but it looks ok. Then I thought that maybe it wasn't the correct lid for a 102, are the lids of the 102 and 101 a different size, could that be the problem I've got ? Steve (Wales) 6-7-17
