Would someone please tell me why, when I put perlite and 1 oz alcohol in a can and lit it for the first time, the perlite started popping out and all over. Also, what can be done about this? Does it stop after the first burn? Thank you.

Hi thanks for demonstrating this awesome experiment! I came across the same problem. I used two “Y stake pegs” to elevate the pot from the stove, and pegs won’t rolling around.

Fiberfrax is one bad mama jama ! Wear a respirator ! Read the MSDS. A better idea may be to rigidize it to lock in loose fibers. Check videos on KZread, manufacturers info and do your homework to stay safe and lung cancer free.

Use the metal wind screen and put the felt around the outside. After the water boils, use the felt screen to move the metal screen. Without the direct flame to the felt it should be much cooler with the metal wind screen reflecting the heat back to the water pot. The felt should be cool enough to be used to move the metal wind screen without discomfort.

Eggshells are basically Ca carbonate. Can mix them with the vinegar to make Ca acetate. Much less expensive than Tums.

No I am not sorry for sending that stove to Hiram. I wanted to prove a point. Speed of boil time is not the only point of consideration. A stove with a tight flame pattern and fuel economy are worth considering to.

Mull item list. Wool vs. carbon felt. Find some discounted wool yarn? Squeeze, stuff it into an alcohol stove, cut a wire mesh dome cap to go over it? "Wool is classified as a flame-resistant fabric. The textile is flammable, but it has to reach at least 1,058 degrees Fahrenheit, to ignite. The material has high water and nitrogen contents in its cells which means if it did ever catch on fire, once removed from the source of the heat, it would self-extinguish the flame.” Perlite can suck up four times its weight in water, vermiculite up to sixteen times its weight. Vermiculite sourced from one place In the US used to have asbestos in it, I'm not sure if for plants, it's still being sold. Old Vermiculite insulation had it in it. Pill bottle disc, made of vermiculite.... The Vermiculite pill bottle disc each hold 1 ounce of fuel, you use two, they work best with the pot, pan sitting on the disc. Either 2 stacked, or 2 side by side. You want to rest the pot, cup on the stones. You eliminate the top surface as a burn surface because of the pot on it, the fuel burning from sides, it's more like your gas stove in the house. It appears to provide more of a blue flame, then having the pot located over the stones, top burning.

@@MrHiramCook Glad to see you're still around! Yeah I just got a piece of it today that's 18"x18" for $15. Only place local here that carries it. It was listed as a carbon felt welding blanket. Worked perfectly! I made a Fancy Feast stove, and also made a similar stove from a full size chili can and tuna can, same concept, just wider. I figured I'd experiment with both and thought the larger one would be good for my larger cookware to balance. The Fancy Feast stove fits neatly inside the other for storage. I'm headed out this week to begin doing the van life thing, so I think these 2 will work great for me. Anything larger and I can use a campfire.

Save money, use fiber glass in most of the burner with a top of thin carbon felt. Works as good as solid CF and the fiberglass dosent melt but still wicks perfectly.

Good video. Thanks. In regards to the size of the stove vs. the size of the pot, Four Dog Stove does an indepth series called Potology. In that series, he shows a wide variety of pots used over the centuries and how they work with different stoves. I believe he said that the ratio to pot size is 2/3 the size of the stove compared to the pot, and the bottom of the pot benefits from rounded edges. That allows the flame to rise up and heat the bottom edge of the pot.

Excellent! I've been experimenting with various techniques. Depending on cooking requirements, I like using the Fancy Feast stove without the simmer ring to bring the pot or pan up to the desired heat, then place the simmer ring on to cool the burn and increase the cooking time available. Also, if the can isn't cut perfectly flat, just flip it over and use the top (uncut part) as the bottom to avoid unwanted air flow. I love alcohol stoves, as well as Hiram and others who've helped us all with their use.

A wick does add a little safety in case you knock the stove over. I use fiber glass insulation for wicks pushed down intothe gap with a popsicle stick.
