    Geez. 1. you absolutely hammered in the keys in the wrong orientation; 2. The orientation wouldn't even matter at all anyway because each mitered corner of you're canvas there is stapled together, therefore the keys are blocked by the staples and the bars are essentially fastened together and can't possibly spread away from each other and stretch the canvas. It's be like trying to insert a brick into a brick wall....it just ain't gonna work. The keys push each side outwards because the corners float. I built canvases for an artist for two years, and you have to ask yourself, what did the ancients do before liquitex matte medium!???😆. Women.🙄.

    Awwwww, thanks for your amusingly sexist comment! (And, who are those "ancients” you speak of? Did they shop for canvases in art supply stores?) Perhaps you didn't see, the subject of canvas keys was talked about here, and yup …..gasp!….there’s a staple in the mitered corner. And - omg! - yes, it prevents the canvas from opening. That's because my Blick canvas came like that, with stapled corners in stretcher bars. It also came with a set of canvas keys, some of which were even too thick to fit in openings - all in all, making them not even workable in this scenario. SO the whole point of my quick key demo was simply to show that keys CAN be a hassle (or useless), and that another tightening option exists, today. So, it looks like “the ancients” aren’t my audience after all. Turns out, this video is for contemporaries, who can go out and purchase polymer resin products - a 20th century invention. And, apparently, this tip did help a few people, go figure!

    What is the reason I can’t paint the front of the blank canvas with matte medium to tighten ?

  • @AnastasiaMakArt
    @AnastasiaMakArt9 сағат бұрын

    Because (presumably) the front of your stretched canvas is primed. So the medium would not be as effective at tightening canvas fibers, with a coat of primer being in the way.

  • @AnastasiaMakArt
    @AnastasiaMakArt20 күн бұрын

    Gloss medium should work the same way, i just never tried it myself because I always have matte in my studio. There’s a possibility of it being more sticky. Be mindful when applying gloss medium near stretcher bars, don’t put a thick layer in that gap to ensure that it doesn’t accidentally stick to wood.

    I have a painting on a loose canvas sheet that is a little smaller than 6 x 6 and I want to mount it on a 6x6 cradled panel, I could either paint a border on the empty part of the canvas beside the painting, or I could paint the cradled panel before sealing it and mountng the trimmed painting. Which do you suggest?

    lots of great info! One thing I was wanting to know is say you've done your painting and added your paint pen but then you want to maybe add a wash or some more paint. I am assuming the paint pen will smear based on your comments about adding varnish. Have you ever coated your painting with matte medium and then painted on it some more?

  • @AnastasiaMakArt
    @AnastasiaMakArtАй бұрын

    You can either seal paint pen with water-based spray varnish, or add an extra coat of matte medium on top of your paint pen by rolling it on with a roller - and then do your wash / paint additions on top of that. Gently using a roller shouldn’t disturb the paint pen. (But, use a high density roller, otherwise it tends to leave spongy texture. )

    I had a painting I was really happy with until I varnished it. I hit it with a brush in a few places a second time and it got thick and not smooth in those areas. I’m hoping to remove the spots I don’t like and I’ll probably have to touch it up with paint and then try it again in the spots that had started drying when I dabbed it a second time. Varnishing scares me!!!

    Hello Anastasia, I am revisiting this video in preparation for doing exactly that, applying matte medium to the back of my canvas. . Questions: I see how you are able to access areas under the wooden frame, but what about the sides of the canvas, since you can't reach them? and, actually, even with the foam brush, you cannot reach the very tips of the corners. So, how do you handle these areas? And, how else do you use matte medium? Thank you.

  • @AnastasiaMakArt
    @AnastasiaMakArtАй бұрын

    There's no need to cover sides of canvas - unless, they're sagging too, but in that case, the canvas should probably be removed and re-stretched altogether. Reaching tips of corners can be done by a different tool - like, a very skinny flat brush for example. But if we're talking about a tiny dime-sized area in the corner, then it's no big deal if it doesn't get covered. If the canvas tightens up after applying matte medium, but leaves wrinkles in a corner part that wasn't covered, then you'll want to get deeper in there to apply it where the wrinkle appeared. I use matte medium also with acrylic paint, to create matte texture for other paint layers, and for smooth application of paint pen. And, it works as glue for mounting canvas to flat panels, or for mounting paper collage over painting (but, canvas has to be pressed down with weight, in order to actually stick to a flat panel).

    Very useful, thank you! Any tips on how to make heavy body paint more fluid? 🙏🏼

  • @AnastasiaMakArt
    @AnastasiaMakArtАй бұрын

    You can thin it out with water or acrylic medium (for example, Liquitex Matte Medium that I use so much, can work for this) - but that also means the pigmentation in paint will become thinner. You can also mix your heavy body paint with fluid paint, and that will make it less “thick” while keeping pigmentation rich. Aside from these options, there is no magic way to thin out acrylic heavy body.

  • @AnastasiaMakArt

    @@Gayathri-Arts metallic acrylic pens are very different from non-metallic colors. Posca metallic colors are not that great, they come out looking quite dull. If you want gold strokes, a solvent based pen option should be more effective, such as DecoColor. But I do not know how it interacts with varnishes. Sealing it with oil based spay varnish will probably be your best bet, I highly suggest doing some testing first on a scrap piece of canvas.

    This is such a valuable lesson you have taught in this video! I am fortunate because when I was much younger, I was a professional musician and vocalist for 12.5 years. In order to play keyboards and sing at the same time, I had to breathe properly and I had to learn to train my "muscle memory" to function at optimal energy levels while remaining relaxed and flowing with the music. When I first started painting again (December 2021) it came naturally for all those energy centres to work together just as they did when I was performing music. I just finished a painting today and I felt energized and uplifted by it, which I believe is how I should be feeling - regardless of the outcome. Good, bad, in-between don't concern me. I learn something valuable from each piece and love the entire process. Even more - I end a painting feeling more inspired and energized. I hope many more people will watch this video because it will make such a huge difference in all of us who pursue an artwork journey, whether professionally or as a hobbyist. Thank you, Anastasia!

    Wow, thank you for sharing your background and experience! Balancing out your energy while performing music is such a great example of this process working outside of visual art. You can apply matte or satin varnish over glossy, just be sure it's the same base as your Krylon varnish. (so if the Krylon you used is oil based, you can only use oil-based varnish on top of it). Or you could remove your Krylon varnish altogether, since it's removable (in that case contact the manufacturer for removal guidelines).

    @@Strawdozz those aren't nails. They're staples. 😄 This is how canvas comes from Blick - with staples on back, and a set of canvas keys. These staples were pretty shallow, but if they do prevent stretcher bars from spreading, that makes canvas keys in this situation even more fruitless, right?

  • @Strawdozz

    @@AnastasiaMakArt Staple is a type of nail. No, it rather makes Blick clueless then :) What else would prevent the bars from spreading? They clearly dont spread at all in your vid and on other vids, they do (at the end, there is a visible gap between the bars). If you removed the staples it would probably work. In any case, its good to know about other methods of 'spreading'.

  • @AnastasiaMakArt
    @AnastasiaMakArt4 ай бұрын

    @@Strawdozz Several things can interfere with keys getting stretcher bars to spread - sizing, for example. Way too often included keys are either too fat or too skinny, which prevents them from being hammered far enough in, or, they fall out. Also uneven or cracked wood inside the openings can create a similar issue. If the canvas is framed, the keys likely won't work. Not to mention, if keys DO work, they must be go into all 4 corners, otherwise canvas ends up lopsided. Most canvas keys demo videos show them working as designed - of course they do! - yet in reality that's not always the case. But hey, if in your art practice keys perform flawlessly, great for you, no other tightening method needed then 👍

    I rarely have to clean them out because they don't trap much air, so the paint inside of them typically doesn't dry out. But, to get the paint remnants out of it, I'd leave the bottle open and let that paint get to a dry state, then use a tool like a skewer stick to remove paint in solid chunks. (also, hot water helps those dry paint solids to get unstuck from bottle walls).
