I'm a bit old school. 1. I still use the term race because it has never really been a defined world in the English language. 2. I still put biological and sexual differences in the various player character races. 3. There are cultural traits and differences based on the vast differences in various cultures between racial populations. 4. Make subraces just ethnicities within a race, and tone down the extreme over abundance of subraces. 5. Then just forbid cross hybriding of races, except under VERY special and high magical circumstances. Not even Half elves should be common. The biological differences of two distinct species/races should make it almost impossible. Overall it goes a lot further to adding diversity to my table top sessions and allows players to really develop distinct characters with truly alien mindsets from each other.

Speaking of Free League, they currently have a bundle of games on Humble Bundle. The games are for Alchemy VTT, I know you're not a huge fan off VTTs but you can also download the PDFs of the content.

I think his KZread show, Critical Role, has had a terrible effect on the D&D hobby, bringing in thousands of purple haired narcissists, who, in turn, have influenced WotC to cater for this minority, and ignore the existing players. Play your game before the convention so that you get a sense of time and where the game can drag, what works and what doesn't. Don't be afraid to edit, even if it means killing your coolest plot twist or NPC encounter. Go from scene to scene and don't spend time on the mundane like shopping trips and chatting with NPCs. Give them a map or a diary instead that lays it all out for them. I don't like pregenerated characters, but I use them at conventions. I have all my encounters scripted out and all my to hit numbers precalculated. No rando encounters. No rolling on tables. I have a list of what every character needs to roll. You look at the player and tell them they need a 13 to hit, roll dice. You need a 16 to save, roll dice.Don't let them think about what they are going to do. If a player doesn't know, move on instantly to the next character and come back to them. Giving them too many options invites paralysis. Use props like colored test tubes for healing potions. Fun way to do book keeping. Limit the number of things the party has to search for. Make the trap obvious and let them figure out how to disarm it. Use complicated doors, not secret doors.
As for the snowflake generation thing about removing roll to hit, the problem is not integrating players into the action. It is a flaw with the concept of directing the spotlight on a single player while others mentally check out. D&D combat isn't quick. You have to homebrew rules to keep everyone actively engaged. But it is funny you are triggered by gen-whatevers... because you have a tiktok light behind you. Are you angry because you're poor? Or because you're dumb?
