There is no excuse for how bad this program is. The old version was awful but it at least it was not completely broken. Save your sanity, move to Articulate.

What a great video! Very concise and simple. I don't understand how this didn't go viral. Definitely recommending this video to my friends at Uni. I don't usually comment on youtube but I just found myself spontaneously writing out this comment. Thanks man, you did such a great job!

I have just come back to Captivate today after using it a fair bit a few years ago. Tried the New Version (about an hour to download install and try it) and it was absolutely lacking! I can't even find where to add Narration to a slide i have added or recorded! What a load of garbage! I ended up downloading the Classic version, luckily it still exists just to create some content quickly, but I can tell you I am going to find a plan B as Adobe, this company who has gouged cash out of our company for many years is NOT going to win me over here! I will now use a different product.

This video hits home. I was immediately frustrated by the things I couldn't do that I would expect any serious platform to allow me to do.

I continue to use Captivate Classic. I am able to push the app and create very intense technical training that I am not able to do with the new Captivate or Articulate. I don't need an app to hold my hand and restricts what I want to do. Adobe should just have improved on the original app and add more options. I also noticed LMS's are limiting options and only providing the basic cheese and pepperoni pizza menu. We need to move forward not backward. Thanks for the video. Helps a lot.

I cannot for the life of me understand a company as big as Adobe can offer such a messy update. The capability to corner the market is right within reach.

That changing slide size is my biggest complaint...I can work around some of the design pieces, but scrolling on one page and not the next is so awful for me and for learners. Oh, and the lack of options for the Table of Contents to customize...and the fact that it says Table of Content rather than Contents and they haven't fixed that simple error in any updates. I love the clean look and the idea of using the templates and widgets, but so painful to actually do anything with them.

Thanks for the detailed assessment and video! To be fair tho the Flash EOL issue is not a fair analogy with Captivate Classic EOL. The Flash issue was due to a browser issue, not anything to do with Flash itself. Browsers were installed on billions of computers and when Flash was depricated the browsers stopped supporting them, existing learning modules wouldn't load or play glitched. Learners would see an immediate impact. That is not the same issue as EOL for Captivate. Existing courses should continue to play fine for the forseeable future and I suspect the LTEOL is much farther out. There are no browser based technical issues on the horizon.

The new Captivate UI looks so similar to Evolve! Now if Adobe would only copy the rest of their homework, they might have a functional authoring tool.

Well said! Yes, it's like they looked at the existing market of tools and said: "Let's do ALL of that!" Yet they didn't investment enough to actually pull off a radically different hybrid between slide-based and scrolling course development or consider legacy user needs or expectations.

Good catch about the EOL date for Captivate Classic. I had assumed they would continue to update Classic as a separate product, like how Articulate maintains both Storylines and Rise.

Chesus Christ! For a company that is all about media, design and communication their video is amateurish as it can be. I can't believe one of the biggest media companies in the world created this for their own product... Wow, wow, wow! The previous Captivate is very powerful however it took way longer to design really stand out courses with it because a lot of stuff had to be tediously created/made. You couldn't just click one button to have an action and a lot of other stuff happening. Now I feel that this process has been better automated.

Adobe don’t really care for this piece of software. It’s mostly used by their learning peeps and thought they would throw it out for some extra marketing stream. Why would they put focus on this, when they really care about the creative tools and AI.

I agree the marketing is all over the place for this product! 😄 It is in no way ready to call itself a 'revolutionary' learning design tool yet. Still, there's no denying that the price point for the feature-set on offer is very good value.

Hi Ernest. I have a custom built PC, but only because I'm a nerd to likes to do that stuff. Unless you are editing a lot of complex videos or 3D modeling, I have found it doesn't require a lot of computing power to do standard eLearning development work. In fact Articulate Storyline itself is a bottleneck in performance and more computing power won't fix that until they finally improve it.

My gut instinct is that Adobe is cutting their losses by not trying to put fresh paint over something that is dated. I have to believe they are keeping their powder dry to create a whole new tool and product "if" they even stay in the eLearning support business.

At this summer time, I started the transfer process of my 420 files from Captivate to iSpringSuite enviroment. Manually... This is very hard and time consuming work, but 4 years old version software (CP 2019 release + 1 bigger update to 11.5) is not value, what I want to pay as subscription based only. iSpringSuite is great, quick, always updated, and easy to use toolset. I miss some functionality such as Advanced actions, but this is only the question of reconstructing and modifying of CP interactions, using new way - non-programming iSpring Visuals or Talk Master etc. But, this is not my end of Adobe - I still use and will use Creative Cloud, the excellent aways updated toolset for digital design and multimedia (20+ years, since CS1 days ))).

  • @elearningoutloud6917

That's no simple task to transfer than many courses, but I agree you weren't left with much choice. iSpring is a good alternative though. Thanks for sharing.

I completely agree with your video. I am stuck with Captivate due to many others being cloud based and not ideal for security reasons. Captivate is so far behind the competitors now and looks so dated. Its extemely frustrating, especially when Adobe have some amazing software packages like XD or After Effects. I would love some of those Adobe developers to work on Captivate to bring it up to date. So come on Adobe! eLearning is a growing industy so I do not understand the lack of motivation from them.

For the reviewers, if you select live preview you will see blue pencils on the top left corner of every article, block, and component. Once you select the pencil icon, on the right side of the screen you will see the comment and have the ability to navigate directly to the comment on the building page. I typically dual-screen the live preview and building page during this process, very time efficient.
