For those unfamiliar with IATA or IACO airport coding, PWM/KPWM is the Portland International Jetport, Portland, Maine. It has two runways, 11 - 29 (7200 ft.) and 18-36 (6100 ft.); the former was closed nightly 10:30 p.m. to 5:45 a.m. until July 28 due to taxiway reconfiguration (removal of taxiways D and E, plus new construction of taxiway A4). The project is scheduled for completion Sept. 11.

Using Unicom instead of CTAF is an idiot move.
I agree! Not that it is an excuse, The FO was on the comms. His background could have been private from GA to Biz so it may have been natural for him to be on Unicom. BUT, my understanding there was no flight briefing with the Captain and FO and the PIC knows better.

I don't agree that grouping everybody in the same basket is productive. It's a diss to all the men, and women at Southwest that follow protocol, and transport their passengers safely.

From the original timeframe on the event, it looked as if they departed at 0545, the time the runway was supposed to open.
My understanding is it was right on the edge. I have heard that ATC in PWM didn't think this was a major issue at all.

Great video, lots of 350's! Are Fed Ex and UPS the only US carriers using MD-11's?
Love this question. I believe so. Fedex is retiring. They're MD11s in 2026. Ups is slowly phasing them out but has not set a hard date. They'll still be flying around the world for a little while. The last one went off the assembly line in 2000.
