I like the concept. Maybe with a more reliable infrastructure, this can take off in the future, but for now, the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge remains the best race of driverless cars.

so why isn't these races streamed live? everyone wants to see a F1/GT style race with these cars instead of just time trials. time trials is more a rally thing. you also should get colleges worldwide involved in building a car. have a GT series and speedway series then later on F1 series. it would grow the sport into a massive form. really push these cars and don't have straights as passing zones that is just lame and not even racing. its basically driving the autobahn. program these cars to understand green, yellow, blue and red flag sections. the average race fan doesn't wanna watch time trials with 1 car on the track because it takes away the enjoyment of racing like overtaking, crashing, fighting over positions, fighting over when to pit and fighting it's way back to the top again after a pit(s) and season points earned each week. do some cool camera stuff too like add 360 and vr cameras and allow fans to switch between cars during a race both inside and outside the cars. there is so much that can be done to make this roboracing into a massive sport with millions of fans worldwide but as it sits now even a iracing/GT race is more exciting to watch to race fans.

This is embarrassing. Over five years in and what do we have? A couple of cars trundling round a track at surprisingly low speeds, dodging icons. This metaverse/VR/AR stuff is just so weak. But I guess you had to do something otherwise we're just watching nothing. Even the video production is lacking. Cameras that aren't straight on tripods too cheap to hold them steady in a light breeze; on-screen graphics that are barely readable and break all the time; even the 'metaverse' (sigh) objects forget to appear on the screen half the time; long periods of nothing happening; audio that stutters, when it's not overlapping; presenters that don't know what's going on... There's no racing because it turns out this stuff is harder than people think. Even with the cars are going round pre-programmed tracks, they struggle to stay on the road and frequently go off for no apparent reason. Roborace is dying and the reason is probably because the 'partner' (ie owner) Arrival are on the verge of bankruptcy themselves and cutting a third of their workforce after watching their over-hyped shares tank to a thirteenth of their value. One day someone will do autonomous racing, but this won't be it.

Credit where credit is due, this technology is very impressive and something to be proud of… but what’s the point? If you remove the driver from the equation, then it’s no longer a sport… or really even a competition at that point. Surly the Better use of this kind of technology would be to attempt to adapt it into use for road cars, such as large high end luxury vehicles, or simply just to experiment with road cars.

I don’t know man. There is not even a single update at either Instagram or Twitter. Something definitely went wrong somewhere. I hope they do recover. But if they don’t, I guess seeing AI racing in reality will not be something we should be expecting anytime soon

I don't get this... we have self-driving cars on public roads. How hard can this be? The track is known, no unexpected corners or situations.. and it can't even really race each other? These things should easily be able to drive to the perfect line on very fast speeds (think of it like TAS in speedruns).. and then have defense and attack lines for each overtaking spot available. Thing is, if the cars drive the perfect line and both cars have the same power and acceleration levels then there is no "race". AI should be near perfect so unless something malfunctions it would just be multiple vehicles driving near perfect in line. There is no driver skill to balance things. The closer this format gets to nailing perfection, the more boring it should get by default.

itd be great if the big manufacturers got into it . it'd help build the tech like racing of old days. tesla vs GM vs apple vs anyone else with autonomous tech ! make the cars mostly identical and have it just be about the ai driving it.
