Welcome to the ham radio video journal of K2CJB. I've been a ham since 1976 and have always enjoyed the hobby! I was fortunate to be able to retire from the broadcasting engineering business a couple of years ago. Now I have more time to explore more facets of the world of amateur radio. I'll share my adventures here...hope you enjoy them!

Thanks for giving the G-106 a go and letting us watch it in action. Nice contacts. Patience and persistence are key if one wants to operate QRP and you demonstrated both. I agree with your assessment of the G-106. It's an Ok radio that performs at the same level it cost. I might purchase one just to play with. 73 my friend!
Thanks! It’s not bad and I’m sure with better conditions it would work fine. 73!
Great improvements.
Thanks!
What a coincidence. I activated DE-0797 this morning using my G-106! 18 contacts in 35 minutes on 20 & 40m. Best DX VK3. Ed DD5LP
Excellent!
I was recently at Valley Forge NHP in PA with my FT-817. Even for CW it was tough. Over an hour for 8 QSOs and then I resorted to FT8 for to finish up with 3 more. QRP is challenging and fun but definitely not always easy.
It’s been tough this summer that’s for sure. I’ve had other outings with my 817 where I worked dozens of contacts on SSB with no trouble.
@@k2cjbradio A month or so ago I was at Lehigh Gorge State Park also with the 817 and was working a CW contact every 3 to 4 minutes. And most of that time was actually doing the QSO. Yes really variable conditions.
This is a great field-test of this rig, nothing beats seeing something in action as you work for those QSOs!!! Great job! Of course, now I want to buy one!!!
Excellent! Thanks!
I’ve got a G106. It’s a great little rig for CW.
Great video Chris, I don’t think any QRP radio would have been any better with the band being so bad. I really like my G106.
Yeah it was tough. But managed to activate!
Great job on that "I'll QSY" operator! Only thing is, you should have asked for their callsign and made another contact for your park activation log! 😎
Hadn’t thought of that!!
Great job on the series for this radio. I *almost* bought one, but decided it wasn't for me. But I was very close for getting it as a backup.
One would think you could. Just erect a full size EFHW or other efficient aerial by Tim.
Nice review, how do you think it will stand up to the wind? Thinking of summits on the air activations. Cheers
Not sure. It was loose in the ground where I was.
When I used to work next to Bradley I would sometimes sit in the parking lot at lunchtime and track planes taking off and landing using that app. I never thought to listen in on the radio though... cool video - thanks for sharing! You live in a great spot to watch planes
Cool! Yes, we’re in the Bradley approach. It’s fun to do!
Always nice to see a HAM experimenting. Those are some great add-ons. Thanks for sharing. 73s
Thanks!
This is a very simple to use radio. I have added to mine, Changed from the standard low output microphone to an afternarket Baofeng speaker mic that has considerably more audio output. An external RF clipper speech processor with a headphone socket. A mobile mount so that it fits the Radioddity coffee cup holder mount for use in a car. The Bluetooth audio and cat control adapter that I built for the G90 also works with the G106 as the sockets are the same. I also added a simple manual Z-match ATU for when using the radio with a non-resonant antenna. For a cheap, simple, small HF radio, there is a lot you can do with it! Thanks for the tips and great video. 73 Ed DDLP
Thank YOU for the tips!! I’m thinking of getting one of those little Z-match tuners to add to my POTA/QRP kit too. Thanks again!
Hi , Could you please inform the mic model you add to the G106? tks 73 de ct1bxx
@@manuelfernando6393 unfortunately it's just an after market one that I had as a spare bought on eBay years ago. I removed the two pin cable and added an rj11 curly cable, so, some construction work is required. 73 Ed.
I also bought one of these to go along with my DX Commander mast. I have been using them both to build antennas for my channel and working POTA. Thanks for the demonstration. 73s
It’s ok but not great. I may look for something else. Thanks for watching!
Great video
Such a shame you ran into a deranged alcoholic on your activation. Fantastic that you just ignored him though and kept going! Well done!
Thanks!!
Nice vid
Thanks!
I bought it in Germany for mountain radio DX - I'm always too lazy to use my Sirio Blizzard 2700 - maybe I'll hear you sometime
QSO over done and not the correct useage
Thanks for being out there. KZ4DE Cool to hear myself from your end. 73
Cool! Glad I worked you!
Your pretty active man, I have worked you twice this year... thanks by the way for the contacts, 73 NS9T
@@radioman3229 yeah when I work from home I try to hunt some pota between tasks. Thank you for activating as well. 73 KZ4DE
CJB fah life ! Ignore the drunken QRM Trolls...always.
Sometimes it helps to just transmit right through that QRM like you don't even hear it. It stinks, but it sure feels like intentional QRM is becoming more frequent. I love to see the activation on an FT-817. I haven't had great luck with mine on SSB, but it's such a nice radio I really should give it more chances to shine.
Working thru the QRM worked, thankfully. The 817 is a workhorse. I’ve even worked Field Day with it. Thanks for watching!
have you tried the sotabeams compressor that goes inline with the mic? looks like he has one in the video. Easily bumps your signal for ssb. I have seen a bit improvement.
Nice activation and good job working through that intentional QRM.
Thanks Mike!
😂 Very nice a Video. Thanks
Thanks!
Good thinking on changing out the connectors for the radials.
Nice but any can make this from parts from Home Depot and Amazon.
Thanks for sharing!
Pretty neat little antenna. Good video Chris! 73!
nice review and for radials -- maybe use insulated spade style....as a male and a female combo would slipping them on and off a breeze. Thank you for the review...
Great idea!
for this I use old tablets on intel atom. Installed debian and hamclock runs smoothly
Have you tried it on 6 metres?
Not yet. On the to-do list for sure.
Made one like that 2 years ago worked well
I built something similar a few weeks ago using that same 5.6m Chinese telescopic whip. The metric base is close to the standard 3/8 - 24 and can be rethreaded with a die. In my case I use a screw-in base but I still needed to add some lightweight guy cords part of a way up. 73 Ed.
It should work on 6m's also. You might have to make 4 1/4 wave radials for that band but it will work.
Good point. I didn’t try that. Thanks!
Metric base on antenna... I got some metric coupling nuts and had a local welder welt them to the head of some 3/8 x 24 bolts...Adapter!
Great demonstration enjoyed it De. N1scA
Nice antenna love it😮
Lots of great compartments.. Kody k3klb is a great operator.. If he uses it, it has been well thought out.. Thanks for sharing ! !
Well done video. I am a licensed ham "like CB ot something" to the rest of my family...Would like to establish a communication network using gmrs. This really shows what can be affordable and without allot a difficulty
Thanks!!
Thanks Chris for the demo. I'd like something that would carry my Yaesu 991A. A heavy bulky radio, but the one I prefer for Field Day. Problem is I'm short and an old lady. Carrying a pelican case is almost too difficult. But I know my radio better protected than the large canvas bag I used 4 years ago where one of the knobs broke off. Wonder if a smaller lighter weight bag like that could be used. Thanks
5.11 has a lot of different bags that might work!
where you have it mounted to the mast pole, is it insulated against it? or is the copper pipe right against the mast? thanks
It's clamped to the pole since that section is shorted out by the matching slider assembly. Hope that helps!
Nice setup, I've been looking at camera duffels to do the same thing, they're rougly similar to that. I refuse to use anything military or "tactical" looking, it doesn't look as safe or friendly to the public (and police) as non-military/tactical looking things and I've seen too many veterans have flashbacks from being just vaguely reminded of their service. The Pelican and pelican-style cases that seem to be semi-popular are too inflexible, both from a literal and "down the road" perspective, for me. Hard-sided cases can protect your radio, but they can also give you a good bump if you aren't careful or don't see them until it's too late, and once you pull out the foam, you can't change the layout. The furthest "hike" I may ever do with a radio is from the car to where I'm setting up for a field day. I have no hiking bone in my body, wandering around and then sleeping on the ground is not my idea of a great time. That G106 almost looks like a modern stereo component! Like a DAC or something like that. Or an interface from a professional XLR mike to a computer.
Agreed on the Pelican style cases. I had one for awhile and quickly outgrew it. Hadn't thought of the G106 looking like a piece of stereo gear, but you're right!! Maybe that was their inspiration? Hahaha
Thanks for showing this, Chris. Great demonstration. I saw when Kody posted about it. But now after seeing more, I'm very tempted.
Thanks! It’s a great bag and you can get alot in it. Works for drive up or very short walk sites.
What model 5.11 Range Ready Training bag is it? They have several different ones.
Here's the link. I should've added it to the description. www.511tactical.com/range-ready-trainer-bag.html
Hi, Chris. I POTA as a stationary mobile, using my Alinco DX-70. My backup rig is the FT-817Nd, which I keep in an old laptop briefcase, with all its useful accessories.. Keep up the good work! 73, Mike K3CXG
That’s kinda how I did Field Day last year. Thanks!! 73 de K2CJB
I use a cardboard box thrown in the trunk..
Me too. I am saving for future food and gas prices.
I’m all over the place. Tactical backpack, sling pack, rubbermade storage tubs, truck floorboard and more. This 5.11 Range Ready Training bag might be the answer. I enjoy your videos.
I started with an old video camera case, went to the backpack, and now this…for now. Hahaha!! Thanks for watching!
Is it any good as a hf communactions recivier I'm a swl
Good question. I’m taking it on a trip this week so I’ll try it out. Stay tuned!
I think if that radio ever went on sale for $200, I'd buy it.
