Welcome to Empress of Dirt

I share creative + frugal ideas for making any size garden space unique and wonderful. My own garden began on a budget of just $100 a year and I still love being thrifty all these years later.

My focus is cold climate gardening in hardiness zones 4 to 8 (parts of Canada and the United States).

Can you use the gunky padding as a grow bed?

Thank you very much. It's given me an idea of how to kill the infestation of Morning Glory in my back yard that keeps coming back no matter how many times I pull it out by the roots. This method is certainly worth a try.

I just stumbled upon this video and I was wondering, did adding the polymeric sand have the desired effect in the end?

I have a 2000 gallon pond with a waterfall and a pump that pushes the water up to the top. Can I add this method by purchasing a pump and materials and sinking the milk carton in front of the Pump?

The idea is to gradually pass all the pond water through the batting so it can filter out the gunk. There are countless ways to do it.

My sweet cat is 5years we got her at animal shelter had already had kittens they named her Ingrid but we changed that to Miss Bo Jangles she is the best kitty that I have ever had she’s so good she uses her litter box always we’ve changed to the pellets and it’s great she’s a big girl and did go through a lot of clumping litter I believe this is much safer for her 😊😊😊

Without refrigeration, it took 3-4 weeks to germinate delphinium in May, Zone 8B. It was my first time, I made it. Now they look very energetic after producing strong root system.

I am so happy I found this video. I will definitely try this. My pond is pea soup and we had to turn off the waterfall because of leaking. The filtering waterfall did an amazing job but the water loss was not worth it in the long run. We unfortunately inherited this problem when we bought the house. It’s so well established that a complete remake is not an interest or worth it. I’ve tried to find ways to bypass the waterfall and recreate a smaller one….. still researching at this point. I do like this method I’ve not seen it before. My pond is 2500 gallons and needs help. I do have a bog filtering system which is helping… 🙌 thank you for the amazing tip!

Folks don’t appreciate how common it is for wild animals to get inebriated from fermented berries. Years ago in my youth I was grouse hunting in MN. I came across drunk grouse twice. After bagging both birds on separate occasions - which happens in a blink of an eye after an explosive flush - upon replaying the incident in my mind I realized that each bird was not flying correctly before the shot. Upon cleaning the birds, I found their crops to be full of fermented berries. You could smell it. I felt kind of bad about it, like it was not really a clean ethical shot.

I have my pump in a cage made of chicken wire, wrapped in polyester fiberfill. When it gets covered in gunk, I take the cage out of the water, hose the gunk off with the jet spray, and put it back in. No need for new fiberfill each time.
