when I started school (back in the mid 1950's) my parents gave me a very fancy alligator skin pencil case with an outside pocket to show a small calendar. Inside was a 6 inch ruler, a "soap" eraser, a compass for drawing circles, and a small "pen knife" for sharpening pencils (or trimming quills in the old days). The nun who taught first grade very gently suggested that I leave it home so I "wouldn't lose it". She knew what it was for, and was not an alarmist. Hate to think what modern staff would have done with me now!

The interesting thing is, that it now requires a video for people to learn about it. I have been doing it since I was about 5 or 6, with insanely sharp blade. Nowadays, parents would be sent to jail just for allowing a kid an access to such blade. But it was another time, another country. By the way, I totally hate store bought pencil sharpeners...

True. I can use a knife/craft knife super safe, and properly, but i still have to hide it in my room so i can actually put them away without anyone knowing. and all that just to do crafting/art...
