I love these moths. They are very rare in cities but when you get lucky, You do indeed find one!

We’ve had all sorts of these things all over the porch of our house and in our front yard. Were all wondering what it is about our house they like so much. But we see that some of them are weirdly missing heads, is it a common thing for these things to get decapitated or something? Theres a ton of them that look like they were cut in half or decapitated just hanging in webs or sometimes off other chrysalises.

Maybe some people should read Merck's Vet manual.

Thank you for sharing this!! I discovered 2 caterpillars crawling up the side of the house and identified them as spiny elms. Within a day, they stopped under the eaves of the roof and attached themselves and hung upside down. I'd never seen them around the property before in 40 years maybe due to the 12 year drought we've had in northern California Sierra's, so it was a chance to learn about this creature and now I know what they'll emerge as, thanks to your video!! I hope they'll keep coming back.

When I was a child, the mourning cloaks laid their eggs on one of our citrus trees. Only the one. The caterpillars stripped the leaves from one of the main branches. We didn't object, because they were so interesting. Anyway, the leaves grew back once the caterpillars were gone.

In northern climates what becomes of them because leaves are not on trees and so would end up on the ground buried under much snow and ice

They can successfully overwinter on the ground in cold climates that are within their range

as a child I would hunt for these insects and keep them to raise in a terrarium. I thought they were cute because they were fuzzy and kind of looked like kittens😂 the older larvae have tufts on their heads that look like cat ears lol. I called them "kittypillars" 😂😂

Adorable! But are you sure this is a woolly bear?? I’ve never seen one with these colors before.
Yes, it is a young caterpillar that has just molted and its head has not yet darkened.
