Above, is the time chart of this video. Please read (7 mins 2 secs) .... "In calm seas, junior naval officers lark around on deck for the camera." The larking around involved MY FATHER! cartwheeling, golfing (yes, he's the UNIDENTIFIED small golfer), tight-rope walking and lying on the lilo! We made this extraordinary discovery yesterday (02.02.16) when browsing the web, looking for pictures of HMS Whitehall and any info relating to my father, who, during 1940 was the Surgeon Lieutenant aboard Whitehall and is, without doubt the extrovert featured in these amazingly revealing films. Special thanks to the Heald-Hall family, John Rylands Library and Manchester Metropolitan University.
Having viewed this footage I believe that the sunken vessel shown between 9mins .40secs and 9mins 50 secs with just the single funnel and two masts showing above water may be RMS King Orry III (1913) which sank just off the east mole at Dunkirk Harbour at 02.00am on 30th May 1940. She was owned at the time by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company and requisitioned by the Royal Navy in WW2. She rescued over 1100 troops off the beach on the 27th May and sailed back to Dover. She then went back to Dunkirk on 29th May and was badly damaged to the extent that the remaining crew which included my grandfather Griff Hughes, one of four civilian Manx engineers, were ordered to move her away from the east mole so she didn't block other ships coming in. She began listing badly as she was taking on more water than the bilge pumps could deal with and finally sank in the early hours of 30th May. The crew were all picked up out of the sea by other vessels. her funnel and masts remained visible for some years afterwards. I found a small photograph of this view of her amongst my grandfathers possessions. She was also requisitioned in WW1 and lead the capitulating German fleet into Scapa Flow.
Sue Hughes Thanks for the information Sue. I'll be sure to pass this on to our Special Collections Department and the member of the Heald-Hall family who discovered the footage.
The University of Manchester Library I shared the footage with other Manx friends as there were a number of Isle of Man Steam Packet ships at Dunkirk on 29th /30th May, 4 of which sank. They think that the vessel shown partially sunk alongside the East Mole at 4 min 53 secs is possibly the Fenella and that at 4 min 37 secs the vessel shown entering Dunkirk harbour maybe the Ben-my-Chree.

Dr Mazza may be right, but it does little to stem the tide of looting or increase the ancient materials available for study. The problem is that it discourages private collections from ever entering the academic or public domain for fear of police reprisal. Even academicians must be reluctant, after Dr Obbink's experience, to share new major finds. In situ papyrus finds by trained archaeologist are great but have yielded comparatively little new material compared to amateurs and looters. Sad but true.
Go Jade! So proud of you... xx
just brilliant
