Wrenchin' Up with Jim Bates

Welcome to Wrenchin' Up where we tackle the automotive projects and demonstrate the diagnostic and service procedures that you, our viewers, ask us about. There are also "Quick Tips", "Tool Talks" "Shop Talks" and "Tech Talk" interviews on various automotive related topics, products and ideas. The new "Back to Basics" playlist contains basic how-to information for the apprentice technician that have been requested by our viewers. We do this because many viewers do not have the opportunity to attend trade shows or to interview the manufacturers themselves. New videos are uploaded on Wednesdays.

    Hi - Thanks for watching! I can only suggest that you check a service/repair manual for your vehicle for the proper and safest method for removing the oil from your alternator. Using the wrong chemicals could damage internal components. You may also want to contact the manufacturer of the alternators in this video for recommendations. Their contact information is in this video’s description.

    Fantastic explanation... all the details, filling in the blanks other videos gloss over, and a very clear demonstration too. One thing I noticed that wasn't mentioned specifically was the pressure gauge bouncing during the aeration, which further confirms for me the behavior I'm troubleshooting on my equipment which is 'juddery' for lack of a better term.

    The vehicle in question is a 2001 Jetta. It has a quick connect at the in-tank fuel pump, located under the passenger side rear seat. When I simulate your test, I've got good ground, but zero(0) voltage at the connector with the key in the on position. In your opinion, what possibly might be at fault?

  • @WrenchinUpwithJimBates
    @WrenchinUpwithJimBatesАй бұрын

    Hi - Thanks for watching! With the key in the RUN position, use a wiring diagram and look for battery voltage for each connection starting from the pump back to the battery. When you get voltage, repair the circuit between that point and the last place where you did not get a voltage reading.

    my dodge ram is more than 0.04 in the view on 1:31 and 1:41 , your voltmeter is not in the same position as when it is seen at 1:42. Then you obviously switch 1:54 to check power, and the voltmeter doesn't change from when seen at 1:42.

    Hi - Thanks for watching! We have had a similar question about this before and we probably could have done a better job of explaining the meter use. But basically, different meters may have different ranges, so be sure to set the meter in the range that covers the value you are testing for. The meter's user manual will probably help if you need more detailed information for using your particular meter.

    There is no extra science needed here, while bench bleeding is nice, all you have to do is a traditional bleed like brakes if your bearing has a bleeder line. pump, hold, open bleeder and repeat. I just did my Hydramax on my Duster and any other step is not needed

    Question. When you remove the clutch pressure line at the Slave Cylinder is the connection a quick sealed connection so air does not enter the line? My guess it is like an air hose coupler fitting. I also think you should use the Phoenix brake and clutch tool to remove any trapped air bubbles by inserting the tapered fitting into the bottom of the Master fluid Orifice to force new clean fluid down into the slave cylinder and open up the bleeder screw to allow any air to escape befor tightening it up again.

It is the last thing you reinstall and it locks into place in the master cylinder.If i were to use this method of bleeding the air from a new master then do i need a special tool to releae the push rod after bleeding process and reinsert again as the last item you connect?

When I take it out and get it recharged at the autoparts store with everything off i get a big spsrk when hooking up the negative lead and the car wont start. If I disconect the neg lead and jump the car on front jump terminals I can drive it like normal. Is there something wrong with the Optima ? Parts store meter says its fine after a 1 hour charge.

    Will this help if my hood latch won't lock? Or is this just a fix for when it won't open?

  • @WrenchinUpwithJimBates
    @WrenchinUpwithJimBates3 ай бұрын

    Hi - Thanks for watching! The procedure in this video is for a hood that will not unlock because of a broken cable. When the hood will not lock down, the usual problem is a sized up hood latch. A liberal amount of a penetrating oil (I like PB Blaster) will usually free up the mechanism.

    @@WrenchinUpwithJimBates hey, the repair manual doesn’t say anything about it, I’m just more concerned on why my cars fuel pump doesn’t work when it’s turned to the on position but does when it’s cranked this leads to the car not starting since there is no pressure in the fuel lines, so far I’ve unplugged the fuel pump connector and used an automotive test light and the fuel pump only lights up when the car is cranked which isn’t normal

  • @WrenchinUpwithJimBates
