    I ordered a Yamaha Studio Lord SL500 from Japan, I understand they used Maple/Mahogany body & Mahogany/Rosewood neck on SL 650 and higher and below those model numbers it was Maple/Agathis body & Maple/Rosewood neck. I wonder if there is a sound difference between the two wood types?

  • @yamahargxtt
    @yamahargxtt4 ай бұрын

    There is 1 piece mahogany, 1 piece maple, 2 piece mahogany, 2 piece maple necks and 3 piece maple necks. There is probably a difference. Easiest way to tell is look at the back of the headstock/neck. Agathis has an open grain with straight lines like Pine, mahogany is pock marked and super tight grain. Also mahogany doesn't take the finish colour well so will be way darker

    @@yamahargxtt It is difficult to find accurate information about these Super Lord guitars, Yamaha published serial # for SG series and using that my SL500 guitar may be a 1980? mine is ser,# 005651 . It has a 3 piece maple neck, rosewood fret board, 2 piece Mahogany body, 2 piece Maple cap. It arrived with, Japanese characters engraved on pick guard, corrosion on the chrome parts but cleaned up well with Mothers metal polish. One small chip near front strap clip but is in remarkable condition otherwise. Mine has a small toggle switch between the lower vol tone knobs, not sure it's purpose yet or if it was built with this? The smell of Mahogany is distinctive. The SL500 smells same as my Mahogany acoustic '1997 DW 4S Yamaha, also grain not straight and dark and light spots. I haven't tested pick-ups yet but no markings under them. Weight is just under 13.5 lbs. Paid $379 US shipping to Canada $170 on Reverb.com Thanks for the information.

    KooL thanks. Great video. i am was thinking a FRED or Super2 or DActivator neck or EVO2 or SteveMorse for the bridge or neck. And a Super or DactivatorX in neck. Well really like those as well as Transition bridge, Utopia bridge. Really leaning toward the D Activator Neck in the neck though. Well and i am looked at the Dominion bridge and neck also. Really like the FRED's harmonics and raised frequency resonant peak response as well for it's presence and hi end and sustains well. Thanks again. Anyone with some advice for the most all out sound i am can get let me know. Also considering the Seymour Duncan slug for neck position and the El Diablo for the bridge position. The Treble pickup used to be in the bridge and the bass in the neck, so this is quite a reversal for sure. Probably need to pair it with an out of phase reverse switch and turn the slug upside down in the neck position that is if it even has a brighter coil. Usually if you see pole peices on one coil with screws on another coil they are different tonally. However these blade pickups do not have that unless it is the Crunch Lab or the Drop Sonic. AND everyone, i am open to use any number of string number pickup with a six string. For example an Active 8 string Dino cazares seymour duncan in an extreme angled position in a modded routed custom pickguard RG 550.

    Excellent review.. ..I wonder if the pickups have an Alnico 8 magnet?( Like some late 70s Ibanez).This would explain the high output as DCR resistance (ohms) is not in itself related to output.. Eg a 15k pickup with a weak A3 magnet will have far less output/volume than a 7k pickup with say a ceramic magnet.. A 15k pickup with the magnet removed will have ZERO output, but will still read 15k.

    The Super 3 is a great pickup. I own a couple. But it's definitely on the darker side, very different tonally than the Super D, and I suspect it was branded the Super 3 for marketing, as are all pickups. While I can hear some DNA from the original Super D, it's not much more significant than that it is in a Steve Morse model, which was the first DiMarzio signature pup, which I also own. The Super 3 is darker, but it does hold up well on the high end and has good bite in the mids and doesn't turn to mush when you crank up the gain. It gets great harmonics and sustain as well. I think it's easier to work with than a Tone Zone, which is also dark but way more bassy in the low end. The Super 3 is what I used when I want to make a bright guitar like a strat sound less stratty, or make a small guitar like a Hofner Shorty sound bigger. It's a fun pickup. But for cleans I would definitely run it parallel or coil split.
