Pope Bono should have left that song alone; and allowed Nick Cave's truly heartbroken version from Shane's farewell to stand on his own. Nevermind the Neolibral Capitalist Gangster Showman in Nevada Desert, instead take yerself back listen to the 40th annie versh of "Under Blood Red Sky Live Album." The world closed their eyes; and could hear Shane chuckle from his coffin when they played Bono's message. "Bono can't be here today, for his friend," because it would breach his billion dollar contract. A lot of people seem to miss the political intent of "Fairtytale of New York" was a feck you anthem to that "Band Aid Bollox"......
@paulcarr59187 ай бұрын
I can't believe people are ripping them over the tribute. Shane had just died the day before, the band isn't even equipped to be able to play a Pogues song, much less do they probably know how to play it. Bono was a fan, a friend, and fellow countryman who, with very little time for prep, wanted to pay tribute to the fallen great. When all that money is spent specifically for you at a venue like the Sphere, knowing he wouldn't be able to attend the funeral because of that (even though he sent a reading to be played), he did his best. It was no MacGowan, but Bono wasn't trying to record the song, it was pure tribute. During that song is about as humble as anyone in the public eye could say they've seen Bono in near on 40 years and he gets flack for it smh. The real injustice was that so few in the crowd knew the song.

@@michelleb3698 they shouldn't have done that song in his honour. That was going to be Nick Cave's tribute. FFS they set that path 30 years ago. When Strummer leading Pogues and Shane was in drunken exile every rainy night in Soho. We need to watch how we look at this re-Bono. Shane respected Bono as fellow Irish man who came from Civil Rights aspects of Irish Freedom. He didn't Irish on Irish attacks in public. But in terms of class, etc he forgave Pope Bono for his sins since 1994. Ireland is one of the most expenisve societies in the world thanks to Billionare Dubliners like U2. Shane wife had to relsease special art book last year just ensure they could afford the care for him. If Bono paid his whack back into Ireland Shane wouldn't have faced that. Both Joe Strummer and Shane Macgowan carried a wedge of their royalities everywhere to help homeless. Bono stash his whack what for? He's sits on mountain of dosh ten times what Band Aid raised.

@@FeckTheBoardIStandWithPalestin I have no doubt that Bono is a piece of crap. But it’s a tribute nonetheless; some at the venue, and KZread viewers may not care about the politics. Plus, it can also introduce Shane’s music to others.

@@michelleb3698 wrong tribute for reasons stated. And in terms of how Bono played that it was terrible and doesn't suit his voice. It would have been nice for him to be original. He should have done "streets of Sorrow/Brum 6" and went into "40" or "pride in nanme of love". Bono, Shane; and people like me are connected through Irish Civil Rights. Also, pretty pissed off because what he's doing with Spehere shows is a rip of Zooropa stuff. Which for people like me in 1993. When U2 played Parkhead Celtic Park Glasgow the show our "bapitism and conforimation into the Glasgow Celtic faith". Measures for Folk-Punks is also sonically and political.
