    The only thing important is the fireplace and a good insert into the firebox . I like a fireplace with chimney out on the back porch to enjoy the fall or early spring . I hate summer and anything warmer than 50° F in the day. For those of us who actually work for a living , 50° is a perfect high of day so you don’t sweat a lot . I prefer a 2 bedroom 1000sq ft . home with eat in kitchen.

    Gunnison, Utah has been our primary sawmill for over 20 years. We have other milling locations as dictated by the location of timber sources - as we haul timber down the mountain from high altitudes, it is important to saw the raw trees into an intermediate squared-off stage called a "cant" before trucking to to be finished into house logs in either Gunnison or Longview, Texas. The initial sawing close to the source of timber actually doubles the amount of wood we can load on an over-the-road truck, effectively cutting transportation costs in half. This is a huge factor in our overall cost structure considering we are delivering house logs all across North America.

    We specialize in the log portions of the home. We are big believers in doing what is best for the customer, and from a financial standpoint there are tradeoffs in both travel and in working relationships that make it best to use local general contractors and sub-contractors in every situation possible. For instance, in the building trades, there is a progression of specialized labor involved in building a house. Foundation, plumbers, framing carpenters, electricians, finish carpenters, cabinets, flooring, painters, roofers, etc. Most of these trades are no different on a Satterwhite home than on a conventional home. For 50 years, we have proven that when Satterwhite sticks to the specialized elements of the log home, which include the entire structural system of interior walls and roofing system (not shingles, but structural elements like beams, trusses, rafters, and decking). By handing the log structure, Satterwhite removes all the uncertainty for a local general contractor, who would otherwise be forced to tack on a big surcharge on building a log home due to not knowing what he was getting into. For our customers, the advantage of have a local builder finish the home is there are no travel costs (lodging, mileage, etc), and the local GC will have established relationships with sub-contractors, and those relationships matter because the subs will prioritize work for someone they depend on for ongoing projects, and they are quick to respond if there is any issue requiring a call back. Because building a house requires supervision and attention to details, General Contractors typically have a radius of anywhere from 50-100 miles that they will accept projects, which allows them to be onsite frequently to keep an eye on progress. Satterwhite working with established reputable local general contractors is time tested and proven to deliver the most house possible for the customer's money. Call 1-800-777-7288 to speak to someone further information on this... sorry for the long response.

    Are your logs kiln dried? I didn't see any space above the window for shrinkage.

  • @SatterwhiteLogHomes
    @SatterwhiteLogHomes3 ай бұрын

    Shawn, you are absolutely asking the right questions because shrinkage is the #1 issue with log homes. Every log home company has to develop ways to address this problem. The Satterwhite solution is to simply avoid it - we make house logs exclusively from dead standing timber, trees killed by natural causes. This wood is harvested from high in the Rocky Mountains, where the trees stand in arid conditions and dry over time to a standard that cannot, as a practical matter of economics, be achieved through artificially accelerated means. Kiln drying is effective for sawed dimensional lumber, where the surface area is a big proportion to the volume. But for massive timbers such as house logs, our natural curing methods are superior. The proof is our grading standards. We test each and every house log we deliver, not random samples from a kiln charge as is the practice in the forest products industry. Not only that, we handle materials carefully in our sawmills to insure that logs are tested on the end closest to the ground, where any residual moisture will be found. Finally, our standards of dryness are higher (lower moisture content) than industry standards. This all adds up to shrinkage and settling in Satterwhite homes that are so small, we do not have to compensate with specialized with workarounds, excessive skill or highly trained labor, and no radical design adaptations like crush zones, floating roof systems, dowels or splines, or though-bolts, etc., etc., etc. The benefits are huge both short term and long. For instance, our freight costs are lower because we are not hauling wet wood. The building system is tightly fastened, increasing strength and insuring superior performance when exposed to wind storms and hurricanes... Dead Standing Timber is "Nature's Finest House Log" is not simply marketing verbiage, it is time-tested. We've built many tens of thousands of homes to back up these claims. Sorry for the long response, but the more you know about Satterwhite house logs, the more confident you will be that these special logs will deliver superior performance over the life of your home.

    What's the logic behind joey recommending that everyone builds a porch around the log home?

  • @SatterwhiteLogHomes
    @SatterwhiteLogHomes3 ай бұрын

    Longevity, reduced maintenance, low cost of ownership. Log homes can easily last 100 years, 200 or more. Keeping logs protected from the elements is key. This includes both precipitation and solar UV radiation. Coating systems (Satterwhite offers all major brands specially formulated for the log home industry) are essential. Porches add a layer of protection that dramatically increases the performance of coatings. Log coatings typically are comprised of a pigment layer and a clear overcoat. The clear overcoat contains UV inhibitors - think of it like reapplying sunscreen at the beach. A properly designed log home with porches, carefully sited in consideration of sun exposures, particularly on south and west facing directions, will lead to a long life and low maintenance / low cost of ownership.

    We're in our 50th Anniversary year, and in that time we've happily served every customer. A story printed years ago in Outside magazine said log homes were almost universal in their appeal, cutting across all demographic and cultural lines. That has been borne out in our experience. Log home people are good people, and like the famous Will Rogers quote, we've never met anybody we didn't like. That said, we're proud of our country and aspire to live up to what America stands for. Thanks for your service. Several of us at Satterwhite have family and friends in law enforcement, and we all wish the public was better informed about the demands placed on officers and the very real sacrifices made, both big and small. Not just by officers, but their families as well.

    We bought a log home last year and want to enlarge a window. Are there any considerations we should take when doing so? Should we support the above logs in any way while installing for a bigger window? Thank you.

  • @SatterwhiteLogHomes
    @SatterwhiteLogHomes4 ай бұрын

    Discuss with your salesman at Satterwhite for full details, but in general log homes have far fewer structural considerations when adding or enlarging openings in the wall. They are so overbuilt to begin with that the upper courses effectively serve as a structural beam. Again, have your specifics reviewed, but in most typical cases, this will not be a problem.

    Thanks for the kind feedback. We have passed your comments on to the presenter, Rick Webb at Perma-Chink. Satterwhite can supply you with a Perma-Chink catalog, with full details on Perma-Chink's extensive product line. Call us at 1-800-777-7288. BTW - don't let the Perma-Chink catalog scare you. The range is substantial, but the typical maintenance required by log homes usually only requires a few specific remedies. Of course, some log homes need more attention than others, and sometimes issues get complicated because early detection and treatment did not occur. Satterwhite offers the full range of Perma-Chink products, even those that do not apply to our Dead Standing Timber house logs. Get in contact at the toll free number above and send a few pictures via email and we will be glad to assist.

    Why do you not have a flat surface on the bottom course??

  • @SatterwhiteLogHomes
    @SatterwhiteLogHomes5 ай бұрын

    In some cases of solid corner log designs such as Swedish Cope, we do have flat surfaces on some or all logs. However, with the 6x6 D House Logs that are the subject of this video, the normal double tongue and groove milling profile provides essentially the same stability and structural integrity as a flat surface. The alternative would require special milling of one course, which would result in additional complexity - meaning labor and potential errors - in the mill, the warehouse, and on the jobsite. We're committed to quality, so the additional costs associated with this would be acceptable, except for the fact that, with the experience of building tens of thousands of homes over the past 50 years, using unaltered tongue and groove house logs on the bottom course has never been a problem. That said, we're happy to discuss milling options at 1-800-777-7288.
