    just a quick question on #4 when the first rail is placed where does it say in the rules that you must consume one coal after the first rail is laid down? Why can’t you just collect the coal after you place the both rails (that you just paid for) down? Just to clarify because it doesn’t specify that in the rules. On #12 Another clarification. One can “only” sell to the market when a coal plant is built if it is connected to it? Is that the same with iron also?

    NoChoke, in the last paragraph on Page 11 of the rulebook, it says, "Remember, Each rail Link is placed separately and must be connected to a source of coal (after it is placed)." In other words, you can't rely on the second link to connect you to coal for the purpose of consuming for the first link. Technically, I suppose you could consume the coal after both are placed, but consuming upon EACH placement makes it easier to verify that you were able to consume a coal at the time of placement of the first link. Thanks for the question.

    Patrick, large enemies like the Broodmother move THROUGH obstacles and other characters without pushing them or affecting them in any way (as if leaping to their destination). The only characters that are pushed are the ones who occupy the hexes that the large enemy will occupy when they come to a stop. At 13:37, I was simply moving the Exile out of the way so I could better show the path of movement of the Broodmother (like she was travelling across the ground). Technically, the Exile was not affected by the Broodmother's movement, so I had to return him where he was. It probably would have been better if I had the Broodmother 'leap' him rather than move him out of the way, to avoid causing confusion. Thanks for the question.

    i think i spotted a minor mistake on Rule #7 the Determination Rule states "If, after redraws, one of your attacks misses (draws 2 or more blanks)," but the ranger has 2 Redraw Tokens. • @ruleschallenge5573
    @ruleschallenge5573Ай бұрын

    Eihlo, I do not believe use of a redraw token is ever compulsory. I believe this wording of the Determination Rule is meant to clarify that you could not gain its benefit BEFORE having used any redraws. In other words, they don't want you to miss your attack, gain the Determination Rule benefit, THEN use redraws (and possibly turn it into a successful attack).

    Quick question--you mention that taking a card from a tower using the effect of another card is like placing a family member "in all respects". Does this mean that if I already have my color of family member in a certain tower, that I can't use a bonus from a card to take an additional card from that tower? (because my color is already there)

  • @ruleschallenge5573
    @ruleschallenge55732 ай бұрын

    That's incorrect. You might be thinking of this rule: "At least 1 trading post space must be empty in 1 of the 2 cities at either end of the trade route." In other words, there can be a trading post on both ends, as long as there is at least one space on either side still open for another trading post to be placed. This is something to watch out for, because a player can gain a LOT of points if they are allowed to keep placing and taking bonus markers from routes where they control both ends. Thanks for the comment.

    @@ruleschallenge5573I just checked the english manual, its worded in an unfortunate manner. Check the summary at the right, there its correct. German Rules are correct as well. One city must be empty. Otherwise its just silly.

  • @ruleschallenge5573
    @ruleschallenge55732 ай бұрын

    I can't find a version of the rules that says the whole city has to be empty. There was some confusion from the first German version of the rules, but that was a little bit different issue. The FAQ dealing with that issue, though, sheds some light on the question you've raised: "Question: I am a little confused about the rules for replacing a bonus marker. Specifically, the criterion that the replacement bonus marker is placed on a route "that has an office on at least 1 of its adjacent cities." Does this mean that if the two cities on either end of a route are both currently completely empty, the bonus market cannot be placed on that route?" [In other words, the German rules made it sound as if you couldn't place the bonus marker if both cities on either side were empty, which is the opposite problem we are discussing] "Answer: No. An "office" is an open slot in one of the cities next to the route. You can't place the BM if all of the adjacent city spaces are already filled with Kontors." Notice the word "all" in the Answer. You can't place the bonus marker on the route if ALL the offices (now known as trading post spaces) are filled, but that doesn't mean you can't place the marker if just SOME of the offices are filled. The newest edition of the rules, from the HT: Big Box, states it the most clearly of any of the editions, and it's the one I quoted in my first response: "At least 1 trading post space must be empty in 1 of the 2 cities at either end of the trade route." I don't see a way to interpret that as requiring ALL of the trading post spaces in one of the cities to be empty.

    Not sure about the first one? Page 9 of the Rulebook says “…you may carry out these effects in any order”. Assuming you’ve paid the cost to put an agent on the space, Those resolved effects are; - the space you sent your agent to - the Agent box on the card (if any) So, why couldn’t you first activate the ring effect and THEN resolve the space, if the rules state you can carry out either of those effects in any order? I’m only asking as a friend seems to think that’s the case, but I read it as the space has a cost - spice - and that cost is determined when you put an agent there. The payment for the space is what you have immediately in spice, and are willing to pay for the conversion. AFTER that, the effect (conversion) happens and you could technically, get the spice from your ring effect first, but still get 6 solari for the two spice you had, after resolving the Agent Box first.

  • @ruleschallenge5573
    @ruleschallenge55733 ай бұрын

    Funny, you're the second one to ask about Question 1 in the past three days. Here's how I just replied to the other question: "Check out the box on the left side of Page 9, "Board Space Costs". It says, "To send an agent to some board spaces, you must pay a cost. If you can't pay the cost immediately (before resolving any effects of the space or the card you played), you can't send your Agent there." The Signet Ring ability is an effect of the card you played, so my interpretation is that it can be resolved only AFTER paying the cost of the board space." As you noted, the space has a spice cost. That must be paid before you can resolve any effects. So you must choose how many spice you are paying, pay them, then (and only then) may you begin resolving any effects of the space or the card you played -- including gaining spice from the Signet Ring effect.

Whether you’re new to the game or a self proclaimed “expert”, these videos will have something for everyone. Would be nice to see further videos of the same game. Maybe incorporate some plays with the following: - “connected” areas - animals that “share” enclosures - examples of end game scoring - breakdown of the break (no pun intended). I only have the German rulebook, but on Page 9 there is one sentence that says, that I can use the effects in any order I wish. Which means, I could use the ring to gain 1 Spice, then send my Agent to the worker place and pay the needed amount. There are no special rules about using the ring in my version of the rulebook, and I´m honest, I don´t care about some posts on the internet of designers.

I did some investigating, trying to find out where you found the ruling that ability cards can be done in a fashion of "only one part of the card needs to be resolved for it to be valid", but item cards have to resolve every single part of the item card when played? That seems inconsistent with the game ruling in general. Can you link where someone clarifies this? Thanks

    Flarke, this was a tough question, and a good reminder to me that I need to make better notes about where my comments are coming from. I finally tracked it down in a response the publisher made 9/25/2022 in the BGG Rules Forum thread, "Are Ability Effects Mandatory": "To perform an ability card you must be able to perform at least one of the effects on the card. I.E if you have an attack card with nothing else on it you must be able to attack. That means having a enemy in range to do so. If an ability has more than 1 effect such as move 2 then attack you can just do the Move 2 part and ignore subsequent effects if desired." They later added, "If you had a Move 2 and attack you could choose not to move but then attack." I hope that answers your question. Thanks.

I got all challenges correctly, feel well prepared. #4, I would say something but let that slide, because if he places them in the other order then basicly nothing changes and is legal.

  • @ruleschallenge5573
    @ruleschallenge55733 ай бұрын

    Thanks for the comment. Regarding #4, it's actually not quite legal if reversed, but it's hard to tell from the camera angles I used. Here was my explanation to someone else who asked about it: " If Grey could place a link legally between Cannock and BoT, then reversing the order would have been a legal move. However, to place a link between those locales, Grey needed one of them to be in their network. We know that BoT wasn't, because there are no grey buildings there and no existing grey links to it. Unfortunately, I have the camera zoomed in, so during Question #4 you can't say the same thing about Cannock with 100% confidence. If you go back to about the 4:25 mark, though, you can see that Grey has no presence in or around Cannock either. Thus, the network action had to be started from Derby, which was illegal, as we saw in the example."

    I found this format very informative, and fun to watch! Thanks for the informative concept and explainer. I have noted the 16 examples below, so I (or others) may reference quickly during a game. General tips - play money to cards to help with calculating first, before committing to the board. 1. Loans - Income marker moves 3 TIERS down (not 3 spaces) to the highest space in that tier. Cannot take a loan if it would take your income level below -10. 2. Building - In Canal Era, cannot build more than once in any location. Rail era is fine, and if you already exist there can use industry card as it's already in-network. 3. Developing - costs iron PER tile removed, maximum of two iron used. 4. Double rail build (treat as sequential rail builds, 1 coal first, then a 2nd coal and a beer) - first link MUST access coal through it's construction (can be to market or a coal industry on board), second link MUST access coal AND beer through it's construction. There may be a case where coal is depleted from an industry tile and not connected to a market making this move impossible. Be sure to check your connections. 5. Double rail build - requires beer, MUST be from industry tiles. Illegal to use from markets, those are for sales only. 6. Scout action - 1 card to take the action, then swapping 2 in hand for 1 each universal card (location/industry). 7. Farm breweries - MUST have your connection to the farm by canal/rail using industry card. Exception, it is your first industry on the board (no previous builds, nor links); this may happen near the start of each era. 8. Double rail Beer - your own beer is accessible regardless if linked or not; if you choose to use other player's beer it must be networked to the very rails you are connecting. 9. Coal consumption - MUST consume from industry tiles first (even if not your own) if they exist and are connected, if multiple coal industries are linked near your build the location of consumption is determined by proximity, must consume closest coal first, then beyond - if tied, your choice. The market (when connected) will always be consumed second if all linked coal industry tiles are exhausted. 10. Overbuilding other players - you may overbuild your own tiles any time, but overbuilding other player's is only acceptible IF the market (coal/iron) has been completely exhausted. 11. Sales to market (coal) - coal from built industry tile will only restock the coal market IF connected to market. Iron consumed comes from industry tiles first, regardless if connected or not. 12. Connecting and refilling coal - As a continuation of 11 above, coal from built industry only ever restocks the market if connected by a link first. It is not retroactive, in other words once a connection to market is made coal does not automatically refill the market - it stays on the industry tile. 13. Using industry cards - can only build industries in YOUR network. Your network is defined as connected by YOUR links (canals or rails), or by your own pre-existing industry in the Rail era. 14. Selling - Beer is consumed upon selling, you may use beer at the market (if your industry tile matches the market sale tile), your own beer from anywhere on the board (regardless of connection), or another player's beer if linked. Multiple sales in one action are acceptable. You may mix and match/choose beer consumed by any means (proximity doesn't matter), but you only get the market bonus (extra coins, extra VP, etc.) if the beer from the market is consumed - they are one time use bonuses. 15. Networking - Building your link must originate from your industry tile, or through a location that your previous link connected to. Exception, if you have no industries or canals/rails on the board you may build your first canal/rail anywhere. 16. Beer barrels from another player - can only be used if linked BOTH to the industry tile you are attempting to sell AND the specific market that your goods are accepted at. In other words, connections to beer (even if from your own rail) cannot be used that are distinct networks from where the sale is happening.

  • @ruleschallenge5573
    @ruleschallenge55734 ай бұрын

    Yes. That rat still targets the Exile, but I should have explained why, because it's not evident from the close-up camera shot I used. Here's how I determined the target: 1. The second rat ("Rat2", I'll call it) looks for an Oathsworn in range AND line of sight, but finds nothing. It doesn't have LOS to the Exile because drawing a line from closest corner to closest corner, the line touches the tree. It doesn't have range to anyone in LOS, because all the other Oathsworn are more than 6 spaces away. 2. Since there are no valid targets, Rat2 moves as far as possible toward the closest Oathsworn whether or not it has line of sight (#6 in "Choosing a Target" on page 19 of the Encounter Rule Book). I should have explained all that in the video, because you can't see that the other Oathsworn are out of range unless you go back to 33:06 of the video. Thanks for pointing it out.

    I _might_ have spotted a minor mistake in this video. @38:18 Even if there would have been a free hex next to Priest in SW, the 3rd rat should engage Warden... Distance between the 3rd rat and Warden and the distance between the 3rd rat and Priest is equally 4 hexes (before the movement). (I assume that the distance is counted through any hexes and not depending on if the hex is free or if there is already another character.) And because Warden is already attacked by other mobbing rats (the 1st and the 2nd) then the 3rd rat should join the party and not seek another target with the same distance. I have only started my campaign, but I have already made many misplays. The rules are quite tricky in this game. :) Thanks for the video. It was fun to watch. I believe it 's helpful for many beginners.

  • @ruleschallenge5573
    @ruleschallenge55735 ай бұрын

    I think the last part of section #3 of Choosing a Target on Page 19 is the relevant part of the rules: "3. If there is no target listed or the specified/reaction target is not in range and line of sight (LoS), the closest Oathsworn in LoS that the enemy can reach is the target. ‘Closest’ here means the Oathsworn that requires the lowest amount of movement to reach." Each rat's target is determined at the time of their movement. At the time the 3rd rat was choosing a target, a couple of hexes were already occupied, making it a choice of MOVING 3 hexes to reach the Priest or MOVING 4 hexes to reach the Warden (based on the hypothetical that it was a valid space next to the Priest). Thus, if he had been able to occupy the space next to the Priest, I believe that should have been his target. Good question. Thanks for the comment.

    Wait, the rats minions don't attack on a reaction? I've been playing the first encounter much more harshly than it should have been, then! Thanks for the enlightening examples, I thoroughly appreciate that format. Subbed!

    For question 10. There is also a reputation on it. Do you gain that also for releasing the lizard. If it would have been legal.. or is that only when you play the card..

    The reputation is gained only by the player who plays the Sea Cave card. So Black gained 1 reputation when he played it, but no other players who subsequently use the card get that benefit.

    I've played this game a few times and somehow missed the 2M€ for playing next to an ocean tile! Nice to spot it in your video, I'll have to remember that next game. 😊

    I enjoyed this but why did you do it with the bosses upside down? So much harder to see what's going on!

    This was my first video, and I was trying to make it like a real gaming situation -- i.e., you had to be able to read the board even upside down. (Also, I didn't have an arm for my tripod to extend the camera over the table, so I had to record from both sides of the table). My newer videos are all right side up for the viewer. 🙂

    @@ruleschallenge5573 thank you for replying 😄 I've just bought this game and having watched two play-throughs I found your Q&A "Is this legal" approach really clever and different. Very useful. 👍

    Very good video I only have one question. When we make sell action, in rulebook says that after we sell to the market we have to flip that market tile as well, doesn't matter if we use market beer or not, in that case there will be no more sales available for other players in that market (assuming there is no more unfliped tiles in that spot)?? So I have to be connected not to any market, but to right market with right good, then after sale tile is flipped and others cannot use this time of building again for sale? Pls reply.

    Herendill, when you sell, you don't flip the merchant tile itself. It stays in play and can be used in the future by yourself or other players. The only things that would be flipped are 1) your industry tile that you were selling from, and 2) possibly a brewery tile if this action used up the beer in it. You may be thinking of the beer barrels next to the merchant tiles. When those are used, they are removed from the board and thus can't be used again (though they are replaced at the end of the Canal Era). I hope this helped!

    Awesome video. I had read the rulebook once and watched a couple How-to-Play videos and felt pretty confident I had it down. I was wrong. This video helped me see the stuff I didn't know I didn't know and potentially avoid misplaying or long drawn-out jumps back to the rulebook for clarification.

    Hey! Nice video! I had a question tho. When you have 2 beer barrels at the trade station. ( 2 differant trade goods. ) lets say Pottery and General goods. Player 1 sells his pottery to the station. He uses the beer next to the vender tile. So far all good. Now player 2 wants to sell as well. Can he sell also pottery using the beer next to the trade goods?

    That move sounds legal. The two main considerations are: 1) Sell to a merchant tile matching the good you are selling, 2) Use a beer directly adjacent to the merchant tile you are selling to. What people sometimes do is sell to a merchant tile where the adjacent beer has already been removed, so they reach across and use the other beer in the city (adjacent to the other merchant tile). That is illegal.
