  Funny how Chevy had a Citation, and AMC had a Pacer, but I guess those were just trim levels and more easily forgotten. (Strange too how a "Citation" is a traffic ticket...) My parents had a Pinto, including the shield between the gas tank and the differential. It actually had some potential, but since it was marketed as a cheap car Ford never took up the cause. For example the 2.3 Liter 4 cylinder actually pumped out some real power in other cars (Ex. Mustang SVO, Thunderbird Turbo-Coupe), but most Pintos arrived with a 3 speed automatic, which usually kept the engine at RPMs where the power and torque simply weren't available. (Dad came THIS close to getting the four speed stick!) . The lack of an overdrive meant the RPMs were screaming out on the highway, so much that when my 5.0 Liter Mustang showed up with five speeds and a clutch, I got better highway mileage and was much quieter. It was nimble and maneuverable, and slightly fun to drive, it's just that with more power at the wheels it could have been so much more.

  Actually, it was the Opel _MANTA_ without the _R._ And I caught some shadows of the early seventies Capri, too. The name _PINTO_ is rather like the original car, carrying way too much baggage on top of the unprotected gas tank.

  @@winstonelston5743 You're right, Manta. Too many beers blows your spelling abilities...🤣🤣🤣 Never had a Pinto, but I had its kissing cousin, a 1974 Mustang II. Essentially a Pinto with a new badge and slightly different exterior body features.

  @@fleendarthemagnificent7372 I witnessed several rear-end pinto wrecks (worked at a service station next to a very busy intersection). Those drivers were lucky that there was no ignition source, because while the fuel tanks always ruptured, there were no fires at Piedmont and Marian Road next to Carriage Cleaners and Chan's Garden.
