I would only stay in the Hotel Zone if a nice beach with that amazing turquoise water is important to you. I have only stayed in one Riviera Maya resort (Hyatt Ziva Riviera May) and the beach was pretty nasty. Brownish water and a lot of sargassum. I am looking forward to staying at this newly renovated Marriot. We usually stay at the Hyatt Ziva Cancun but are looking to make a change.
Marriott will have an amazing beach for sure. Luckily sargasso hardly came last year so Hyatt Ziva has been beautiful. I would also look at the Secrets Playa Blanca when that opens soon.

Entrees are about 300-400 pesos while cocktails are around 200 pesos
Can you get by with absolutely no Spanish?
Yes you can get by in most of Playa Del Carmen with only English.
Do they have an onsite club or bar?

Yes Secrets is the adults only side. Dreams is family friendly. But Secrets guests also have access to Dreams. Hope that helps!
