Hi All. I'm Anita and I sold my house and moved onto an electric narrowboat as a complete novice last year. I've been cruising, making lots of mistakes and having an absolute ball and I want to share my adventures with you.

Another lovely vlog, thank you. Many moons ago when we stopped at Milton Keynes for a walk into the main shopping we were dumbfounded by the local taxi drivers. We finally convinced one of them that we came from a boat on the canal and that it ran through his town. His comment when he dropped us off at the bridge we wanted was that "he always wondered where his brother went fishing!". I think MK recognises its waterway now.
🤣 A lot of the green spaces that have been created are along the canal. The towpaths are well maintained as well. I loved that comment from your taxi driver🤣🤣🥰. Have a great week 🥰

How long is your boat? What made you decide on that size.
@@lauralie9658 Afternoon Lauralie. Great question. Watt Way is 57 feet long and the standard 6 feet 10 inches wide. I chose that because I don’t want to be limited on where I can and cannot go. I want to see the whole of the UKs Inland Waterways 🥰🥰

CRT can not fix it they put all there money in to putting people of the canals .That is the poor . As they are the, CRT want it for the rich only. The courts have the money now .

Nice. I have a broady gourmet. Oven is under the firebox. Winter time my power bill goes down! As I cook on it and it heats my water. Wonderful! I love it. I wanted to put in a radiator down the hallway but the local plumber in NZ just said no can't do it. Grrrr! Love your boat.
Hello Polglen. Oven under the fire box sounds a great idea. Bet it works really well. Shame about the radiator but better to do one thing well than 2 things badly 🥰.

The Winkwell swing bridge used to be pushed by hand,(see film The Bargee)and they weighed a ton ,l know,there was one up near Wast Hill Birmingham and the kids used to get a free ride on it😊
😂That sounds fun. I think I would like a ride on it now🤣. People keep telling me about the Bargee. I’ll have to watch it 🥰🥰
Broken lock gates? We've moved a mere nine miles in three and a half weeks due to damaged lock gates and water shortages on the Rochdale Canal...
😮I’ve heard it’s really grim at the moment on the Rochdale. I have some friends also stranded there. Is there any end insight to your nightmare yet??🥰

What has been the best thing about narrow boating for you and Charlie?
@@lauralie9658 Hi Lauralie. Great question. I love meeting all the people along the canal, walkers, fishermen, boaters and chatting to them. I’ve learned a lot and met some amazing characters. Equally I love sitting in the middle of nowhere, just me and Charlie and watching nature do its thing 🥰🥰

Liked the opening shot of Lot Mead lock. I grew up in Rickmansworth as a 9yo to about a 20yo. A young me used to help the working boats through Batchworth locks and sometimes cycled up to Lot Mead where more help often earned me a free apple from someone on the boats. Later years around the early 1990s I was working in Ricky again and my lunchtime walk was down a lane alongside the railway line down to Lot Mead where I would sit and eat my sandwich lunch. More often then not shared with a Coot or two. I'm glad that you are enjoying the area, I always did.

Entertaining video. Funny how things change. When the ‘horse-powered’ Grand Union Canal was finished, the horse was king (as it had been for 1,000’s of years) the most valuable thing a man could own, a status symbol of his wealth which many could never hope to afford. With the advent of the steam engine just years later - you couldn’t give a horse away.

Dear Anita, in London (the Thames Barrier) they are already preparing for the increase in water levels due to climate change by 2030 (and a total of 1m by 2100). Do you know how it will affect the canals in general in the United Kingdom in the coming years? Sorry 🥺if this question is too serious or inappropriate 😔😌☺🥰.

Not sure I`d risk my health drinking canal water regardless how its been treated. I know much our domestic water comes from rivers; however that water is rigoursly checked in laboratories for bacteria growths. Where I work we have a reverse osmosis plant but that process water is dosed with Ozone gas which is far more effective that UV lamps
@@admiralcraddock464 Fair enough. I believe the testing that has been under gone to get the certificate to be allowed to sell something as drinking water. But I will be independently testing my water just to make sure it does what it says on the tin 🥰🥰

Oh Anita, you have the best water filtration and treatment system to drink it too💦💫. It is expensive but you are totally independent and you even drink purer than bottled water💧💧💧. Great and thorough lock opening tutorial 👍. Have a nice week 🥰🤗🥰

If you have to put a bit of grunt into closing the lock gates try leaving the gate paddles open until you've closed the gate. The open paddle allows water to flow through the gate to break the small vacuum created behind the gate as you try to unstick it from the wall. Grew up around the Batchworth locks many, many years ago. Where that Tesco is used to be a working narrow boat builders called Walkers.

You can always tell when your water filters are not working correctly because your hair turns blue. LOL Its a great filter system you have, however I was expecting a spindown filter to be in there before the pump.
Evening. There is a little filter, kind of like a spin down filter before the pump. It’s clear so you can see the water flow 🥰
Very interesting. Thanks for posting. Good content. Not sure why though. Personally I wouldn't. There's too much to go wrong and why try and drink from that filthy, stagnant, open sewer that is the uk canal system? There are plenty of filling points where you can get fresh water. I have a 400 litre tank that provides all my needs and is I feel, a better solution.
🥰Hi Ian. Fair enough. I wanted a filter system so that if I ever can’t move my boat for any reason I can still have water. There is not much difference from the water in canals and the water in reservoirs. My system cleans the water in the same way as water treatment plants do before it is put into the mains. I will be regularly testing my water though. Just to make sure 🥰🥰
@@ElectricNarrowboat yes, I understand and its a perfectly valid approach and a very interesting one at that. I’d worry about the maintenance side of things. What would happen in case of failure of any one of the components. Do you have a rigorous maintenance schedule? If a component like the uv light or diesel filter fails does it contaminate the tanks?
@@ianjones6685 if the UV bulb stops working the washing up and shower water becomes an e coli and coliform soup. ISO rat piss acceptable level times a million. I would hope that theres a system that monitors the power draw so if the bulb stops taking any amps it sets off an alarm and or stops the pump
I have a similar water filtration system that I designed myself. Particle filters, UV filter and RO filter. The main differences are that all of my water goes through the RO unit, and I use wound fibre string filters. The advantage of these is that they can go in the washing machine when they get clogged.

Hi, many thanks for sharing, always enjoy your cheerful shows. Very interesting information on the water, initially i thought errr canal water but i guess all our tap water comes from something similar, we just don't see it up close
@@philsmith5208 Morning Phil. That’s exactly right. When you look at a reservoir that water is filthy. Tap water doesn’t go through a reverse osmosis system so actually my drinking water has been shown to be cleaner than tap water🤣🤣. Thank you as always for watching and have a wonderful week🥰🥰

I'd like to know how often you have to change out the filters and what the estimated yearly cost is.
Hi Sherlock. The particle filters are changed most often but that depends on the amount of sediment in the water to begin with. The others should last a good few months. The estimated cost is around the same as water bills in a land home I think. I’ll let you know the exact costs after I’ve had the system in and working for a year 🥰🥰
