Washington State University Libraries' Films
Washington State University Libraries' Films
Films and videos from the holdings of the Washington State University Libraries, primarily historical and/or university-produced films from the Pacific Northwest.
During 2013-2014 we ran a football film digitization project, and those may overwhelm the university history. Move to the first or last pages in the the list of items for the non-football stuff, or look for the "Historical Films" playlist!

Sally is a great hero to me and I love to see more women entering science! 🌝👽🇺🇸
That Palouse is a fascinatingly unique area
Was the dam this necessary to destroy this natural wonder😢
One more comment: this was the last season of single-platoon football in the NCAA until a brief return for economic reasons in 1953, so the same players are moving back and forth on offense and defense, sort of like basketball or soccer or rugby today...
Link for the 1940 OSC football Wikipedia page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1940_Oregon_State_Beavers_football_team
This appears to be Oregon State film. The game was held at Bell Field in Corvallis on Nov. 9, 1940, and won by the Beavs, 21-0. The Beavers are wearing orange uniforms and black helmets and WSC is in white. Almost all the offensive plays show OSC, which is kind of a pity since the Beaver defense was highly regarded and put two long-term players into the NFL. I've been writing up a really nice Wikipedia page on the *1940 Oregon State Beavers football team* and am absolutely tickled that this film exists. I could never figure out why whenever a pass was being thrown it was a halfback doing the throwing - I didn't see a single newspaper mention of the OSC starting quarterback, George Peters, throwing a touchdown pass for the entire season. Left halfback Bob Dethman, on the other hand had several. Now I get it: under the single wing offense the quarterback was the "blocking back" and the ball came back either to the left halfback or the fullback. I've got all the OSC uniform numbers up on the Wikipedia page. You can't see too many in this film, unfortunately. Note that Beaver head coach Lonnie Stiner used a "double deck" substitution system, in which the starters played quarters 1 and 3 and the reserves played quarters 2 and 4. It is hard to figure out quarter breaks other than by direction on the field.
The inserted music with the always icky Andrews Sisters was very annoying.
Backward India maharajah squeeze people for lavish life
Keith Jackson retired 48 years after this game and fittingly the last game he worked was arguably the greatest game ever played... Texas vs USC in the 06 Rose Bowl
Keith Jackson the greatest broadcaster of all time!

I was at this game! Big celebration at Ratskellers in Moscow afterwards!
To much picture changing,... can't look at the part's.. long enough.. to enjoy them,... otherwise good........
Fun to watch. These guys would lose to a terrible high school team today but sports evolve.
I love to see anything Northern Pacific in Pullman, Washington. I wished I knew what was included in the consist of these "Cougar Specials."
Wow Keith was young here. . I loved listening to his games in the 80’s all the way to 2006. May he rest in peace
worked here over 20 years never saw this- really cool
Page 575 1931 Wiley Post and Harold Gatty flew around the world in 8 days, 15 hours, 51 minutes. Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon flew nonstop from Tokyo, Japan, to Wenatchee, Washington---first nonstop Pacific crossing.
Wow! This looks like the coaches tape.
It's from 1987 but it looks like it could've been from 1960.
WW2 would have been lost by the Allies if social media and unrestricted immigration in the West existed then...Thank God it didn't.
❤
Excellent !
Which team is which?
Are you out there Joe?
That must have been the day that the term "Couged it" was invented.
This dope Keith was a graduate of Washington State College in Pullman under the G.I. Bill. Hahaha. No partiality here? Should've been canned. I guess one could say the video was canned,
Thank you WSU Libraries! I'm one of the players on WSU's team and was unbelievably surprised when a friend told me of the video! I think it's the first time I've ever seen me play. Seriously!! What a thrill !!!!!!
Was at this game with my Dad as a 16th birthday gift. We've reminisced over it often over the years. Oregon featured Bobby Moore, who eventually changed his name to Ahmad Rashaad. He was a force. But Bernard Jackson outplayed him. The play of the game was the fake punt at 31:15 that Jackson ran into the end zone. NO ONE could find the ball until he was well on his way, including fans. Its hard to see on this film. The ball was snapped to a back (Grandberry?) who quickly pushed it forward between Jackson's legs with his right hand before faking a pitch with his left. Jackson had to pause, bent over hiding the ball until traffic cleared. An Oregon D lineman actually put his hand on Jackson's helmet as he searched for the ball. What a great moment...seeing him streaking down the sideline with fans going nuts! I've some precious memories from Joe Albi days.

Another travesty due to too much power concentrated in the hands of a few with much to gain.
I was at this game! A very entertaining game in which WSU managed to Coog it in classic style. The biggest 2 plays occur at 1:01:05 and 1:08:43.
Great old recruiting film.
Alas, thirty more tumultuous years awaited them...
Socialism...at its finest. got the job done

Great video. Watching from Scotland 🏴
I worked here from 2014-2019 and it’s wild to see some of the stacks being built then that still stand today. Long live the Lazy H
It was a great game for the Idaho Vandals.
This is the game where Walton was undercut late in the game and broke his back in 2 places. Does anyone have footage of that? Which Cougar player fouled him? It was a shame as it has bothered him all his life. However, go cougs…
Love this film
I saw this game and it was a fine battle in the mud and muck of old Neale Stadium. It was a tad cold that afternoon.
Thank you! My family and I were living in Seoul at the time - I was 7 yrs old, and remember seeing some of these events. It was quite an experience!
This Stanford team is historically very significant. The poor Wash St. Defense Probably had no idea what they were looking at. They and their coach popularized the Modern T formation with a Man in Motion which replaced the SingleWing as the dominant formation. Forms of the Modern T is still used today. The great Frankie Albert is the QB. This is the birth of modern football. The Bears used the same offense to wipe out Washington later that year 73-0.
Oregon quarterback Chris Miller and tailback Tony Cherry are featured in this game
