Understood, this applies with every trade especially audio production / studio gear and GAS: gear acquisition syndrome. Would this camera make sense if you did not already have a goto camera on hand? Im considering getting the KomodoX, currently around 9K stripped. Thanks in advance, I appreciate any insight.

Great pointers, tips and suggestions. Skillset always shines through better than what camera you have. I'm still on the Sony a7iii. I've learned so much about maximizing the full use of the tools you have. When monty permits, you get better tools but bettering you skillset is always the most important.

Hey, looking for alternative recommendations on cameras for independent film making. I know the black magic is great, but personally ive fallen in love with the Red Komodo through client work. It’s so expensive though and im trying to find something that keeps the high quality film work, while also being easy on a solo filmmaker

My biggest mistake was buying Red V-Raptor 8K VV + DSMC3 monitor + rig and spending about $31k on it, instead of buying 3 different Atlas Orion and using them with for example BMPCC 6K or RED Komodo OG. If you have the money and definitely want to own the equipment, then invest in professional lenses that don't drop a lot in price every year and don't get upgraded as often as cameras. The BMPCC 6K will be delivered to me tomorrow and I will sell the Raptor.

I just wanted to ask, why didn’t you find a production company in Florida to work with, that does similar work! Are there better one’s in Oregon?

Great video. I'm a little confused as to why people think this camera is so incredible. Yes it's a box, but it's not a very small box. Why would you get this when you could get a BS1H, slap the video assist on it (you'll need an external monitor anyway for either camera) and still have Blackmagic raw. And that camera came out 3 years ago, and it has great autofocus and battery life. The Pyxis should have ditched the in-built screen and shipped with an external screen that can plug into one of the USB-C ports for monitoring and camera control, but still recorded Braw internally. And shrink it to BS1H size. That would have made it an amazing camera for rigging and gimbal work. As it stands now, you'd need a larger gimbal to accommodate it because it's too long and heavy. I only see this being a great camera for shoulder work, at which point get a used ursa mini 4.6K for the same price or less, and it will be far superior in many ways(unless you have to have full frame).

You're speaking truth. I'm a hobbyist and I got a BM 6k a few years ago right after the 6k pro dropped. The price of the 6k dropped as well. I have been so happy with my OG 6k that I'm not looking to get anything until I need to. I have yet to outgrow it and there's still a lot to learn wait till the price is right for you. then you won't have regrets. Shoot I'm just learning how to color grade bRAW.

Thank you sir. This is very important advice. For those who need another angle to prove this point, consider the iPhone. From the first iPhone I purchased in 2007, I found myself making the annual trek to the Apple Store to purchase the next one. By the time the iPhone X was released, it was about having the latest instead of waiting for a game changing upgrade. I stopped finally at the iPhone 13 Pro Max with the determination to wait until the iPhone 16 is released. I fought the addiction even though there were withdrawal pangs when the 14 and 15 models were released. LOL. I have the Blackmagic 6K Pro and decided not to get the full-frame 6K Cinema. I’m so glad now that the Pyxis 6K has been released. I don’t want to start chasing these cameras again. I’m also waiting for DaVinci Resolve 19 Studio to be released in its final stage and not loading the Beta.

It's frustrating to see content creators continually promoting new cameras with statements like, "I'm selling my Red Komodo X for this camera." When Just a few months ago, they were endorsing a different camera to acquire the Komodo X. This cycle of videos feels disingenuous. While it's their job to highlight the latest gear, it becomes toxic when it creates the illusion that one needs the newest technology to succeed. Young filmmakers often buy into this, thinking they must have the latest equipment to excel.
