i too love d.c., as it's home to some of my favorite folk. it's also nice to witness it through the lens of one of my favorite storytellers.
I like the fact there is less video of Pennsic than more, but I can see why people like to film the event. Sometimes I do wish they would ask. It is a private event.
Beautiful Woman
I was wondering if I'd recognize anyone then discovered you focused on the group I used to belong to! :)
I too, was in that bridge battle, just psid online fir thus year !!
Lose the foam and "honor system" and use the buhurt standards.
Those weapons are rattan not foam. Not that I have anything against foam fighting or Buhurt fighting for that matter. The variety of medieval combat sports have grown dramatically and there is room for every fighter to find their place. Foam fighting and steel fighting are their own sports and if I ever ever want to try fighting with their standards I can always do it at an event designed for that.
Buhurt is even further detached from medieval combat than the SCA system is. Buhurt is just wrestling in armour.
Far and away, the best, or most valuable thing at pensic are the people that seriously study, and reproduce the arts or material culture of the time period based on/ using actual academic research.
Wonderful actor
I remember the first time I picked up a kolinsky stable, I wondered what the big deal was. It was better, but not THAT much better, right? Then I went back to a synthetic and immediately realized how much better my life had become.
Been a few times, one of the single best experiences you can ever have.
You're so brave 💕
So Amazing. Absolutely love your family!!!
Emilie literally spells her name for you, and you STILL don’t care enough to spell it right as you put her name on screen. Christ.
i can't wait to see what Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin thing of this. Right?
I just got into SCA, I hope to go to this one day
Always good to see Yaya.
@3:14 She clearly spells it "Emilie" and the caption still reads (Emily) lmao. Great video though I enjoyed it immensely.
I have questions. I would be tired as crap. What advice do you have when traveling with kids?
How amazing, can't wait to visit 🛸💫
I have been lucky enough to go to Pennsic Twice. 2018 and 2011. Both times were absolutely phenomenal times with a LOT of great friends. If you've never been, you have to go at least ONCE.

This is a lovely little documentary, but why would you misspell Emilie's name as she is spelling it haha
It’s funny because her real legal name is Emily! Maybe she changed the spelling recently. (From the same school)
Fantastic! Great to see Laura and Josh in this episode! 🪕 🎻
OMG!! I'm so honored to be in this video (15:37). I love being able to get deep into my African heritage, and being a part of this AMAZING festival. I can't wait to go again😁

Thanks for sharing. I was looking to see what Jordana Spiro was up to. Looks like she’s having fun.
How many people there have a connection to the Clinton's body count?
What a wonderful vid! You captured all that is good and right about the SCA in general, and Pennsic in particular. It is HOME for many of us - the place where we feel our most authentic selves come alive. We hope you return, and share time, space, food and drink. And tell us of your NSTIW adventures. (No S*** There I was .....)
This was so beautifully done, bravo! And it’s absolutely true. I found a family there, too.
Well done, Thuras! My first Pennsic was #10, in 1980. It is indeed a magical place. Thank you for capturing it so well. Come back anytime.
That bear mug that Dylan is drinking from is from a shop called Ash and Griffin, who are based out of my home kingdom of Calontir! I hoard mugs and my Ash and Griffin mugs are some of my favorites!
That's a mug from Ash & Griffin Pottery!
Nicely done! Best piece on the SCA that I've seen in a long time. You were sincere and dove right in and experienced new things. None of that "oh look at the oddballs, hahaha," that unfortunately is the tone to a lot of pieces. And to Dylan; good job on that fight! Not bad for your first time in helm. Hope you can do more sometime. (Earna, heavy fighter, Northshield)
I live less than a mile from Cooper Lake Campground (what the place is actually called). Now I have not lived here my whole life but my family goes back to the 18th century, as I believe the third settler in the township that Coopers Lake is in (Worth Township). I was always told that the people of Pennsic don't want the locals around, and that we were not welcome. I actually drive past there all the time except for that few weeks in the summer when I go around a different way. I had to chuckle a bit when the guy from North Country Brewery called it Moraine Lake. My grandfather was born in a house that would now be under Lake Arthur which is in Moraine State Park. I mean I guess Pennsic is good for the local economy as Coopers Lake makes a killing off of it, or at least I hope someone is for all of the inconvenience it causes the local community. I think many of the locals think the Pennsic People are a bit crazy and we do have a few nicknames for them. I am sure like any group the community is nice and they do enjoy leaving their real lives to pretend to be someone else somewhere else. My advice is to just be nice to the locals who pay the taxes that make your weeks vacation run so smoothly.
I'm sorry if the people who told you we don't want locals around, had a bad experience. It can't be further from the truth. We are a welcoming group to all and love to show around new folks and share what we do. This video demonstrates that very attitude. All we ask is if you go to one of our events, you make an attempt at medieval wear. There are locals who already are a part of this community.
Greetings. I live the same neighborhood as well and I’ve been going to Pennsic of 20 years please allow me to attempt to explain this misunderstanding. Pennsic is the largest yearly event for an organization called the SCA. I often compare the SCA to something like a medieval themed scouting program for all ages, but different. The SCA has smaller day long or weekend long events that happen every single weekend all over the country, but Pennsic is sort of like our international convention. The small events are always meant to be welcoming to new people interested in what we do. You can usually show up right off the street and check it out, but Pennsic, while still welcoming, has additional challenges due to its size, duration, and scope. Pennsic is a private event that anyone, local or not, is welcome to join, but it’s not exactly “open to the public”. It’s an event where participants are invited to be active in the experience, must have an attempt at appropriate costuming and the event pricing reflects either a one or two week stay. I think the misnomer that locals aren’t welcome at Pennsic comes from people who don’t realize what Pennsic actually is. I’m sure every year there is someone who sees it from the highway and shows up expecting a Renaissance Fair and then gets to leave disappointed when they are stopped at the gate. It's just not something designed as a day trip for the casual spectator. My advice to anyone interested in Pennsic is to use the SCA website to find their local group and check out some local meetings and events and go from there. That’s really the best way to get involved in the hobby.
Looks fun! Wonder what my midevil name would be;)
I am curious if 'pencek' is your actual last name. If so, it would be just about perfect for this festival. 🙂
Thank you for this wonderful look at my hometown. Like most kids who don't appreciate what they have, I couldn't wait to get out of there to see the world, but my heart will always be in this magical place. This video brought me so much joy. ❤
Born and raised in Thermopolis WY! Moved to Riverton,Wy in 1987. Still have family in Thermopolis and go back now and then. Love it there and all the Bison. Park is beautiful in the summer.
Pennsic 50 was my first! I’ve been in the SCA for 28 years. I was in that bridge battle! How exciting!
You should see the Tipi Retreat... High on the mountain with views for miles. Amazing!!!
