I am JUST finding out that The Lion Sleeps Tonight by The Tokens IS a cover song from Mbube by Solomon Linda. It's just sickening how this talented man has been exploited. I'm glad his family is getting royalties off his music. It's also sickening how the U.S. is hiding or manipulating history to their own benefit.

While this may be true, it lacks some seemingly critical context. The original song mentioned here as Mbube bears only a passing resemblance to the "version" we know as "The lion sleeps to night " or "in the jungle." Only 4 to 6 verses of the song has any similarities to the Tokens variant. Not to mention that the original song had no dependable lyric in English simply repeating the same frass over and over setting it to a melody. The Tokens took those 4 or 6 verses all towards the end of the song and then used those as a backbone before developing something clearly different. This song was what the Lion King used. Diseny didn't steal anything here, they payed for the Tokens, "The lion sleeps tonight," and that's what they used.

Why is this is beautiful?
This is on a par with the 4 seasons.
Not a single bit of this melody ever told me it could have been created by a european, I had to go and lookup the truth and turns out i was correct 😅
There is a lot of talk about how this melody was used in “The Lion King” and it being cultural appropriation but as you can hear in this recording, already in the 1950s and 1960s, ethnomusicologist and civil rights and union activist Pete Seeger was telling audiences about this somg coming from South Africa.

The beauty, integrity and haunting quality of this rendition genuinely make me cry. I feel much more positive about modern versions, knowing they are derived from this wonderful work. Thanks to KZread this version can be remembered for ever and its story cn be told and known. Works get reworked and covered all the time but it's so heartbreaking to know there was no recognition fo the basis of the song. This version is truly beautiful.

I really like the Netflix documentaries, but it's sad for me that in the Doc about that song they dont put the full track for everybody hear the power of that god's gift. It's impossible to cover the true spirit of this, only a homage.
