played this in a jam a few years back with Melinda Jamrom. She said she got it from Christian Wig's album. I picked it up from that. Love the way the melody appears to be in the key of D, yet barely utilizes the tonic chord.

As far as I can tell, there seems to be two versions of this tune - the Shelor version and the Knauff version. As gadaya pointed out in his comment above, Scott Prouty does a nice rendition of the Knauff version on his Shaking Down The Acorns album.

Thank you! I’m playing a 6 string, so the second bass string is tuned down to G. You can do the same thing on a 5 string by tuning the 4th string down to G. (Or A, if you’re playing in A)

These are Bow Brand harp strings which I get from Kolacny Music company, Denver CO. You can also get banjo specific gut strings from Gamut Strings. If you’re using harp strings, I go with 1st octave A for 1st and 5th strings; 2nd octave A for 2nd string; 3rd octave D for 3rd string; and classical guitar silver wound on nylon A for 4th string.
