I've been chasing retro gaming perfection since 2013. Along the way I've learned a few things. I like to share stuff I've learned and to learn from you guys. Feel free to give dissenting opinions. Analog tech is a dying art and we can learn from each other.

I have a CT-27D12 and a CT-27SL13 Tau and the D12 is far better. A lot of the Panasonic sets with component in the early 2000's have a bad jungle chip that cause a poor image with lots of distortion, these Panasonic D models do not have that issue. I don't like flat CRTs so I mainly collect curved with component and these sets are close to the best. This is right up there with a Philips. The biggest downside to this TV is the service menu options aren't great. They have good geometry though because the adjustments were all done in the factory via glued on magnets. Basically even though this set isnt Sexy, its one of my favorites because the picture is so good.
@@winnington23 cool thanks for the info. I've heard other people praise the Phillips sets but I've never seen one.
Hi mr riggel, the proscan tvs?,in the middle of 90s was so expensive,in hometheathers magazines and audio/video high end magazine show thats tvs like high end tvs, from 92 to 99 year remember,i wish to see a good review from you, thanks
The CRT looks much better then the BVM
This helped me Alot thanks mand a follow INC
Mine has good colors but needs more brightness contrast and brightness controls are not helping what can i do? Does it need motherboard repair?
You should add Philips sets to your video. Philips are insanely good!
Have you ever found a service manual for this?
Never bothered
@@riggel8804 trying to figure out how to reduce horizontal size. Nothing in service menu so I’m guessing a component on my board is messed up since the horizontal size is far too big
Damn, I wanted to hear the New York story :( Good video though :)
I just did that same TMNT no deaths on Throwback Thursdays AVGN was probably joking about the game being bad as a kid I didn't hate the game It was extremely ridiculous when getting towards the end in the technodrome and trying to find it what I like about the game a lot is you can switch to a different turtle on the fly which I thought was done very well overall the game is really good and it's RockSeady 😂😂😂 you called him Bebop 😂😂 you should play Iron Sword that game was over the top with the difficulty you guys are hilarious awesome gameplay and Happy belated birthday 🎂
I got Ironsword on my channel. Might be my favorite nes game. The music is amazing. I tell a funny story about my friend who pees on stuff while I'm farming for gold.
@@riggel8804 🤣😂 oh yeah I think that's how I bumped into your channel yeah the music score is awesome my favorite is Wizards & Warriors 3 Kuros Visons of Power I did Iron sword with no deaths what a rough game lol but very good.
Literally everyone on earth is an ethnicity 😂. You'd have to be raised alone in the wild to not belong to a group who shares the same social and cultural experiences.
Yeah but Izzy is more ethnic than me. She's super ethnic.
Nintendo boner 😂
Yes, unironically is a word
Yes more of these, you two are very entertaining
Yea I think so. Might do Street Fighter 2 Super Turbo next
Glad to see a new upload! Will have to watch when i have time away from work.!
Happy birthday dude. Nothing like having a drink and kicking back relaxing with a classic game on a Crt....you're lucky to have someone who will hang out and enjoy with it you.
where did you get your mister from and how much was it?
Yea my wife doesn't like playing games but she likes doing these reviews with me. It's a cool way to share my hobby with her. I bought my MiSTer a long time ago. Like 2018. I think it was way cheaper back then. No idea where I bought it. I love it. Been selling off my original hardware because the MiSTer is just better in every way.
I prefer composite for the dithering
You two are so funny 😂 “Yoshi is Mario’s horse’s name!” “It’s a dinosaur…” “Ok Freud, what it is…” Hope you had a good birthday!
Thanks! Yea so far my 40s are going good. Been checking out your channel. Good stuff. What fighting games you playing? I'm playing a lot of syper turbo lately
You’ve really nailed the special inputs! Super consistent!
Thanks for stopping by. Always nice to meet another SF1 enthusiast. I thought your video was going to be super basic normie stuff (most vids on sf are) but i was pleasantly surprised. Nice to see you get some objective data that cotelates with the techniques I came up with.
@@riggel8804 thanks buddy. Yeah I was frustrated by the lack of detailed info I could find out there. To be fair, most of my videos are more along the basic normie line of things 😝
Man I feel like such an idiot and I could use your advice. I have a Toshiba 27AF41. I was trying to figure out the number of hours of operation, but it's the Toshiba produced model not the Orion, so I couldn't figure out the combination. Previously I had adjusted the geometry a bit. Was able to change the width and horizontal positioning. Anyway, I felt like the color is not great on the unit (wasn't sure), and I wanted to shift everything back to the defaults. I found the service manual and changed all of the settings back to the presets listed, and now the geometry basically looked horrible. Here is my real question: now I am actually unable to change the width on the unit. A lot of the adjustments don't work. I feel like I screwed something up when I was trying to find the hours of operation. I'm almost positive that I initialized the memory (which the manual later says not to do). It says "CAUTION: Never attempt to initialize the data unless QA02 has been replaced." What should I do? This looks horrible and I can't adjust anything now. Is there any way I can just reset this thing to the factor settings? Thanks man Another mistake I may have made was trying to adjust the GMPS setting? I don't know what it does and the service manual doesn't list a value or default value whatsoever. No idea what I did wrong or what to do now.
I have no idea sorry dude. I've been told multiple times by old heads not to factory reset a crt
@@riggel8804 K live and learn. I got it for cheap and have another one that is great. It is what it is
What do you think about the kv-29x sets?
I have an Australian 78cm (30”) Mitsubishi Black Diamond DIVA CRT that I can only ‘assume’ can be RGB modded, only because the exact same PAL TV from Germany and the UK came with RGB input via SCART, whereas Aussie TVs only had Composite and S-Video inputs, but I literally cannot find even a single image, article, or video on the DIVA range (68cm or 78cm models). Maybe one day I will find some info.
RGB allows me to assert dominance over component plebians. They will never know the status and power of that RGB lifestyle!
Need to find someone to RGB mod mine! Need to find that post you mentioned.
it has component video. Just get a trasnscoder
@@riggel8804 yeah but I also have a similar one with only s video
I got a flat screen panasonic as well as a lot of other sets one of which is a real low hours flat screen trinitron and the gemoitry issues are none existant of the flat screen panasonic but always there on the trinitrons, I came to the concustion the issue is more with the high brightness levels given from the triitrons aperture grill where as the shadow mask while not as bright dosn't suffer from the same issues.
I concur. My Panasonic CRT had way less geometry issues than my Trinitron.
@@davidbenning10 I have been playing with it recently and I noticed that reducing the contrast and brightness improved a lot of the imperfections in the geometry on the Sony, I was noticing what seemed to be some almost jagged edges to the squares on the 240p grid pattern before hand.
Great video. Gonna reference this for sure.
What model is that TV from the right side?
Theres an xbr200 tate and a wega on the right on the thumbnail

Hey, how’s the CRT collection looking these days? Curious what your still got in the arsenal from the consumer grade side?
I've sold a couple and I'm looking at selling a couple more. I might do a "downsizing" video and call it something hyperbolic like, " why i sold my crt collection"
@@riggel8804 That’s a great idea. Ill keep an eye out for that. I am sitting at 10 of these consumer grade sets and it’s so hard to sell any off. Like I need to make sure my CRT retro gaming needs are covered until age 80.
@@RetrofIex haha yea. I remember getting enough crts for a lifetime was a priority at one point but I think we passed it up around CRT number 5.

I have a Sony KV-24FS120 and the way its shaped I think I'd have to build a special piece of furniture to put it in tate mode
I had to build a little wooden step for one of my wegas to put in tate. It was rounded on the sides. It was a pain. Should be less of a pain with a 24 incher though
@@riggel8804 No I mean the way it's shaped is totally different so it would require more than that
@@liamconverse8950 good luck
I’ve found, in most cases, that Component actually looks better than RGB. RGB can appear too bright and actually wash out colors in the process. Component keeps the bright colors vibrant while keeping the dark tones nice and warm. Its hard to compare the two, but Component definitely can be arguably a lot easier to pull off in a retro setup 😂
Yeah, i have been thinking about that, how people bought an expensive CRT TV and only hooked it up to cable. I saw a 36" Tau on nextdoor and i noticed it was only hooked up with rf.
How are you plugging your pc into that tv
boomer magic
I just finished the walls for my gaming room and today i movemy CRT and entertainment center and all the consoles in there. Definitely want to try getting the best picture i can out of it. This vid was very imformative, only problem i have is i cant get into a service menu on my CRT being i was told it doesnt have one. So the Blue picture filter options arent available. Im going to try and get that SMPTE pic on my CRT somehow and just do what i can with what i got. Thanks.
lol same story. Couldn’t find a Black Tau… I could find the silver one no problem all around me, but I really wanted the black one. I settled on this exact same model. Sleeper for sure
This was such a nice video to watch, and nostalgic as well. Thank you and your dad for it, God bless you guys and cheers from a guy in the distant land of Montenegro
a Bang & Olufsen CRT will beat all Sony Trinitrons and any other Japanese brand.
Which one's better Bang or Olufsen?
@@riggel8804 xD I'm picking up today a B&O Beovision1. I'm so excited I'm watching videos about CRTs non-stop, and yours are great! I tested the B&O last week and while it has great picture (high end Blackline Philips shadow mask tube), a very convenient size (25'' and extremely narrow for a CRT) and better speakers than any other TV I've ever seen... it doesn't look as sharp as my KV Trinitron. Thing is it was a main room TV on a rich family home so, I don't think it has many hours on as a living room set. It may be a good investment since I have limited room for this hobby and I'm getting a good deal. The B&O looks super cool, has amazing build quality, many extra features, and it destroys my Trinitron in the sound department, but the picture quality doesn't justify the price most people ask for those TVs compared to other high end consumer CRTs IMO.
Most of the retro consoles support RGB nativity or through modifications such as SEGA Genesis and SNES. As for PC-E, it seems only has RGB modifications. Could that be a factor to consider when choosing RGB or component?
Na. Just get a component tv and buy a transcoder
@riggel8804 Don't quite understand buy a transcoder to convert RGB from console to component input on TV?
@@linxeen135 ive got a video on it. I think its titled "how to get rgb into north american crts"
@@linxeen135 if you live in an area with lots of rgb tvs by all means get an rgb tv. Here in the usa rgb tvs are rare and component tvs with a transcoder is a better option
@@riggel8804Most of my TVs only have S video and composite hence I mainly use PVM for gaming. Thanks for this great video which gives another perspective for me to reflect. Is RGB the best and only option? I'm now ordering some component cables to try them out.
