One of the darkest years for this country. We lost an icon of this sport AND we have the biggest attack committed on American soil in our history. Unbelievable. RIP Dale. #3

It’s been so hard to watch this back, that I haven’t since I watched it live. Man, I completely forgot how well Dale drove those last laps to defend the two DEI boys up front. What a drive!

2001 DAYTONA 500 LAST LAP THE DAY THAT NASCAR CHANGED FOREVER!!!! THE DAY I WAS ALMOST 40 YEARS OLD & I CRIED LIKE A BABY & I JUST COULDN’T STOP CRYING 😭! FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH EVERY TIME I HEARD ON THE NEWS 📺 OR THE RADIO 📻 ABOUT DALE I WOULD JUST TEAR 😢 UP & CRY ALL OVER AGAIN!!!! THEN THE FUNERAL I BROKE DOWN & CRIED AGAIN & AFTER DALE WAS BURIED I COULDN’T BRING MYSELF TO GO TO ANOTHER OR EVEN WATCH ANOTHER RACE IN 2001 IT WAS LIKE PART OF ME DIED IN THAT CAR WITH DALE !!! A WHOLE YEAR WENT BY & I DIDN’T GO TO A RACE TRACK, I NEVER WATCHED A RACE ON TV 📺 OR LISTENED TO ONE ON THE RADIO 📻!!! PEOPLE WOULD ASK ME TO GO & ASK ME TO COME OVER & WATCH A RACE & I SAID NO. I JUST NO LONGER HAD A INTEREST OR A DESIRE TO GO OR SEE IT OR HEAR A RACE BECAUSE I FELT THERE WAS ONLY 2 MEN WHO BUILT THE SOUL OF RACING RICHARD PETTY & DALE EARNHARDT SR !!!!!! PETTY RETIRED AFTER HE ACCOMPLISHED ALL HE COULD ACCOMPLISH WITH 200 WINS & 7 NASCAR CHAMPIONSHIPS & HE DIDN’T WANT TO RETIRE BUT HIS AGE SAID OTHERWISE. DALE WANTED THAT 8TH CHAMPIONSHIP & I FELT LIKE WITH HIS DRIVING SKILLS & THE TEAM WE HAD AT RC MOTORSPORTS DALE COULD’VE TAKEN THE 2001 NASCAR POINTS CHAMPIONSHIP !!!! STERLING MARLIN HAD THE CAR THAT WAS SET UP TO WIN ON THE TRACK THAT DAY. BUT DALE IN THAT LAST 10 LAPS COULD’VE PAST DALE JR & MICHAEL WALTRIP & THEY BOTH BEING DRIVERS FOR DALE EARNHARDT INC. THEY COULD’VE HELD OFF STERLING LONG ENOUGH FOR DALE TO WIN 2 DAYTONA 500’S IN A ROW & DALE KNEW THAT. BUT DALE WAS ASKING WHERE STERLING WAS & DALE WAS LAYING BACK 3RD BLOCKING STERLING TO SEE HIS 2 CARS GET FIRST & 2ND! DALE WANTED TO SEE JR DO A SLINGSHOT MOVE & GO DOWN UNDER MICHAEL WALTRIP & BEAT HIM AT THE START FINISH LINE 🏁. DALE WANTED IT TO BE FATHER AND SON BACK TO BACK WINS AT DAYTONA BUT AS FATE HAD IT, IT TRAGICALLY DIDN’T TURN OUT THAT WAY!! SO I’D HEARD THEY WAS GONNA DO SOME THINGS AT THE 2002 DAYTONA 500 IN HONOR OF DALE & I DECIDED TO WATCH THE DAYTONA 500 IN 2002 & THERE WAS JUST AN EMPTINESS IN MY GUT & IN MY SPIRIT THAT STILL IS EMPTY TO THIS DAY. I BELIEVE DALE EVEN JUST BEFORE HE HIT THE WALL & HE SEEN & KNEW THAT MICHAEL & DALE JR WAS 1 & 2 FINISHERS & HE HAD DONE HIS JOB KEEPING STERLING MARLIN FROM GETTING BACK TO THE FRONT !!!!! IDC WHAT ANYONE SAYS I KNOW FOR A FACT DALE IN THE RICHARD CHILDERS #3 CAR HAD ENOUGH ENGINE TO HAVE BEATEN EITHER ONE OF HIS OWN DEI CARS MICHAEL & DALE JR. BUT HE WANTED HIS DRIVERS & PARTICULARLY HIS SON DALE EARNHARDT JR TO WIN THE DAYTONA 500. BUT HE FELT LIKE IF HE COULD JUST RUN BLOCK ON THAT FAST 💨 STERLING MARLIN CAR FOR 2-3 LAPS THAT STERLING COULDN’T CATCH THEM ON THE LAST 2 LAPS IF HE WAS IN FRONT OF STERLING. POSSIBLY DALES DECISION NOT TO VOLUNTARILY WEAR THE HANS NECK RESTRAINT DEVISE TURNED OUT TO BE THE MISTAKE THAT CHANGED NASCAR FOREVER!!!!! SO FAST FORWARD TO DAYTONA 2002 & MYSELF LISTENING THE THINGS THEY SAID & THE WHOLE REMINISCING OF 2001. THINKING ABOUT THE CRASH & ME GETTING WORD THAT DALE WAS GONE JUST BROKE ME DOWN AGAIN!!!!! DALE EARNHARDT WAS A MANS MAN & HAD MORE FANS THAN ANY RACE CAR DRIVER IN NASCAR HISTORY & STILL TO THIS DAY THERE’S NOT A DRIVER COME CLOSE TO THE POPULARITY OF #3 THE INTIMIDATOR EARNHARDT WHO WASN’T JUST LOVED IN KANNAPOLIS & MOORESVILLE NORTH CAROLINA & THE USA 🇺🇸 HE WAS LOVED & ADMIRED INTERNATIONALLY ALL OVER THE WORLD 🌎! NASCAR WAS NEVER THE SAME AFTER DALE EARNHARDT SENIOR. MY OPINION HE COULD DO THINGS WITH A RACE CAR NO ONE COULD DO! DALE COULD FEEL THE AIR ON HIS FACE & KNOW HOW TO PLAY THAT AIR DRAFT TO DO UNBELIEVABLE THINGS WITH A RACE CAR AT 200+ MPH THAT NOBODY ELSE COULD DO. HAD DALE STILL BEEN ON THE TRACK FOR A COUPLE MORE YEARS THERE’S NO DOUBT IN MY MIND WHATSOEVER HE’D HAVE GOTTEN HIS 8TH & MAYBE 9Th NASCAR POINTS CHAMPIONSHIP. BECAUSE THEN THEY COUNTED THE POINTS RIGHT NOT THIS GIVE EVERYONE A CHANCE LETS NOT HURT ANYONES FEELINGS TYLE BULL CRAP..... NO IT WAS STILL REAL NASCAR RACING IN THE EARLY 2000’s ! IT WASN'T UNTIL HE DIED & NO LONGER HAD HIS SAY WITH BILL FRANCE IS WHEN NASCAR CHANGED THE RULES SO MUCH THAT IT’S RUINED THE SPORT NOW. RIP DALE EARNHARDT I LOVE YA OLE BOY! 🚙 💨 🏆 🦌 🔫 🤜🏼🤛🏼

I remember watching this race. Then my mom calling my dad and i and saying we needed to look at the news a Special announcement t was being made. We turned it on and heard the announcement. I spent the next hour in disbelief staring and going back and forth between espn and NASCARS website. Then the next week reading every article I could finding just hoping it was a dream. NASCAR died that day

The fact that Darrell and mike started referring to how happy there Dad would be lets you know that they both were well aware of the circumstances. The quote that always gets me is when Darrell says " if he can survive this run he will be ok" as they took the white flag. Darrell was well aware of the deadly game they was playing with all that bloxking and trying to force so many cars into a certain order. What dont get talked about enough is all the effort that Schrader was putting into helping keep marlin behind the 15,8 and 3 . This whole ending to this race is why you can not run these cars and block and force fabricated positions. Had dale had it his way it would have been 8 15 3 38 55 2 For the finishing order and they all but did accomplish that but just like Earnhardt Marlin was a true racer and a two time Daytona 500 champ with a job to do and he was going to do anything possible to do so. All the other drivers mentioned were bought and payed for heading intk this race.. if you follow Dale Sr cup career in the Daytona 500 having help ro run up front and give him a chance to win more 500's he had plenty of help this day and that 3 car was plenty fast probably the best car he had ever had at Daytona its a shame they didnt just race it out and let the best man win.. because they didnt do that we ended up loosing a great driver

Who knows what would’ve happened if Jr wasn’t in between dale and Michael? Would dale have moved Michael out of the way to take the lead? Because I seen this race live and I think dale had the faster car out of jr and Michael! But dale did what any father would’ve done! And stayed back and pushed jr and Michael! Also he did something that he never did before! He blocked other drivers! Man what a legend the intimidator was!

Michael Waltrip had no business being out front like he was. He broke his obligation with Sr. His job was to help him get his son a Daytona 5OO win early in his career Sr didn't want Jr to have to go through the struggle of winning like he did.

Almost everything about this race was perfect. The passing, the track, the broadcast, everything was perfect. Except for one corner. That one corner made this go from the best race in history to the worst. Rip Dale. Nearly 23 years later you are still missed by fans each and every day.

I was there in the grandstand at the start/finish line. Didn't know he passed until we got back to the hotel and saw Mike Helton on the TV. I wasn't a particular fan of Dale, although saw firsthand how he ran that week in everything, I cried, and didn't watch NASCAR for over 10+ years after that.

He was dead when the car was sliding into the infield. That’s why Ken Schrader (hope that’s spelled right) saw his condition upon walking up to him and frantically motioned for the paramedics. Not seen in that coverage as they showed him walking around the back of the car, and then cut to a different shot. He knew right away.

Idk why but it’s just crazy to me how fast people realize something is wrong. For instance, pay close attention after the race ended and you can hear MRN radio’s Eli Gold reporting in the background stating that Schrader was quickly calling over for the medical crews and you can hear the stress in Gold’s voice. That was still a few seconds before DW was saying he hoped Dale was OK.
