The Scala Foundation’s mission is to restore meaning and purpose to American culture through beauty, liberal arts education and religion. Scala was founded in 2016 by Margarita Mooney Clayton, a professor at Princeton Theological Seminary. Scala’s activities are led by internationally renowned artists, prestigious scholars, and exemplary educators in both K-12 and higher education who teach workshops for educators, lead masterclasses for artists, and run summer programs and seminars for students.

Solid perspective on education.
This is an intelèctulization of Orthodoxy. More Anglican than Orthodox.
The United States of Amnesia. ( Gore Vidal)
The trouble with orthodoxy converts is that because of iconography, they all think they are art experts whose opinions are lauded over others ' with impunity. JP is a marvelous crafts person not an artist.
To say that the arts in a museum do not have a participative role is just plane stupid.
This is BRILJANT!
So it’s useless😂
5 and a half minutes until the actual conversation starts. This could be an area for improvement. 😁
Thank you for this!
I am a graduate student. I studied philosophy. For a long time I thought that studying philosophy was not useful. But after seeing this video, I feel that studying philosophy is very important
I was not aware of “The Black Intellectual Tradition: Reading Freedom in Classical Literature”. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. To anyone interested in the topic of “Classical Education and African-American History”, I recommend Susan C. Jarratt’s fascinating article “Classics and Counterpublics in Nineteenth-Century Historically Black Colleges” (College English, Vol. 72, No. 2, November 2009).

Thanks for sharing, I’m reading Aidan‘s book at the moment.
How many classes do modern lib arts folks consist of rhetoric, astronomy, music? It is a upper crust nonsense degree for the hunger games Capital city people to continue smelling their rose scented farts.
Amazing icon. Stunning how much is incorporated here. Thank you for sharing.
Wonderful talk, Margarita! This has been very helpful to me.
Remarkable, thank you!
Do the faces in the icons look like his face? I think so
Fastest blinker ever
She said nothing by talking this much
Thank you for this interview. As a Catholic architect who has been involved in designing churches in New Zealand I have found your conversation very helpful. I'm looking forward to your book.
Have you see our videos with Aidan Hart, an iconographer from New Zealand based in the UK? He's also going to soon apprentice a young artist from New Zealand.
Yes, I have watched a few videos with Aidan Hart, also very helpful. I'm interested in how Catholic church architecture can embody the iconographic tradition in a contemporary way. Also, how Iconography is introduced into 20th century churches without creating a distracting clash of languages.
Where is the KZread Video with Aidan Hart on priests, prophet, and king?
You can find that here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Ymt_2tyDcaXZm7w.html
Thank you both for this captivating conversation, it generates a need to be quiet, reflective and open to a renewed appreciation of the beautiful patterns in all areas of life. I will seek out David's books for sure!
Well said! thank you for your comment!
Thanks for uploading this! I enjoy Aiden's talks
Banksy is a real artist. Marcel Duchamp? Meh.
Banksy is trash. I'm not a fan of Duchamp, but I won't deny his place.
Liturgical Art does not just entertain, or use reality instrumentally, it gathers reality and refocuses it towards its divine purpose, thereby transfiguring it. This is ultimately a shade of the purpose of man in creation. To expand Eden into our personal worlds. To imbue life with purpose and beauty. To offer it all up to God in worship. By carrying out the actions of Christ in the world, we are being the body of christ, and are therefore transfigured ourselves.
Loved this conversation, great questions and great answers right from the soul and from the Scriptures. Thank you both!
Great discussion on postmodernism and its contempt for Christianity, authority, and hierarchy. The ugly statue of the raggedy spirit being in front of the desacralized church showed that loud and clear. Thank you.
Is Moses and Elijah there because God is eternal and so meeting any human directly means that moment they met God is preserved eternally? So when you see the transfiguration you’re seeing all eternity which includes the moments God showed himself to man?
In a recent video on the transfiguration by Orthoglobus, it said that Moses and Elijah represented the law and the prophets pointing to Christ's divinity.
Wow
'True beauty wounds us because it points us to something beyond ourselves'-- what a delightful conversation!! I was inspired to pick up "The Wounds of Beauty" by Margarita Mooney Clayton after the 2023 SCALA Foundation Conference in Princeton, NJ. I couldn't get enough of this book, it was an absolutely edible & nourishing book to read.
Excellent Thank you Aidan.
Thank you!
Wonderful, thank you.
Terrific questions and answers!
You're correct. Education is supposed to enrich the soul. Today, education is a series of mental gymnastics. "STEM education" is education the same way "social justice" is justice. Is this not the natural consequence of secular liberalism? Hence the title of my next book: Secularism: The god that failed™©®
Jonathans body language right at the start 😂 I knew something was up with the guy at the far right of the screen. Then the liberal arts professor requested respect for the boundaries of secular art 🤣 a kind of safe space 😭 at about 5:50. Then 53:42 hahahahaha
Most incredible is how little attention, memory and remembering this truly truly Christian understanding manifests within Western Civilization.
22:32 pillao!
Jajajajaja.
Great and necessary conversation. Echoes of Romano Guardini here.

Beautiful message ❤ Thank you. I will check books written by Mr Makato Fujimura.
6:26:00 It doesn't have to be the Arthurian legend anymore. It can be LotR.
But it cannot
Fabulous conference. Helped me to reconceptualize and reformulate many of my ideas I have acquired in forty years of teaching in a secular college setting.
I attempted virtually and am SO happy that I did. Learned SO much and so happy to learn my thoughts on beauty and art are shared by so many and I have a place to discover it more. Thank you .
What an amazing day. So much wisdom shared. So many kind and interesting people. Margarita with the riveting content and the best moderator on earth? I need a new notebook after today jammed with great stuff from every speaker. Thank you !
All liberal arts programs throughout the country should be shut down and teachers fired and building scraped in order to flower cost of tuition across the country
Thanks for sharing this :)
Thank you to you both for your work!
23:15 So tedious. The bush burned without being consumed and the virgin conceived but remained a virgin. Simple and basic. No need for the long convolutions.
