    Thank you. I was not familiar with those other tree checkers. I have a massive tree, and "Thrulines" is a pain and has caused numerous issues and duplications. I have 28,000 people, with 1485 in duplicates, according to Ancestry, and 3000 people that need sources. The sources for those people are most likely in-law cousins not blood related, where I don't hold the time value for in creating my tree. I have really loved the process of this research and discovery.

    Thanks for the comment - I would certainly recommend Family Tree Analyzer (free) to help you with checking your tree. Having no sources is not a big deal in my opinion if the people are not in your direct lines of research. Many of the duplications in Ancestry might be false and due to similar names or birth dates.

    I agree protocol should be 100% free regardless. And here’s the pros and cons to it. The pro side is that it tells you where to to work on. The inside it can mess up your tree very easily.As guy sends 12 hrs a day on my adopted family none made past 5 generations. I made to 12 generational this point. Were to start everything from 1950 behind should make sense. Your 1st should Something like a birth certificate or maybe first communion or something kind of tieimg you that person. This way, you can have their name and date a birth and then you should ask them hey who were you born and now you can start doing your genealogy. As you progress, you’re going to have cences 1950 to point of death. As a person who does this all the time, make sure you get there first name their last name and the city and and where they were born. Those senses reports can then make sense so you can suck one backwards don’t skip out if there is a 1950s, then a 1940s and a 1930s and a 1920s you should be able to get all those without a problem and you should not go forward until you get those. Then you’re gonna wanna tie it off with a dust certificate or something from the journal sentinel saying something about the obituary and then go to their husband or wife and start that process again. And you’re gonna write down all their first names and last names to the point where you’re gonna feel comfortable with those names and I’ll keep that in mind, I would start with two binders, one for the father one for the mother, you’re just gonna keep going back like that and when you get to the second generation, you should have no errors at this point. When you will start getting into trouble is if you go right into senses or you’re using and copying and with somebody else’s information. It’s not gonna make a big difference if you use the ProTools or not it’s gonna do it’s just aggravate you and make you wanna quit so just one person at a time and just keep going through it.

    For the average user it's a once in a blue moon thing as far as I can see. The enhanced shared matches is handy for pinpointing matches who are closely related to each other (usernames don't always make it obvious). Once you know x is a sibling of y and they are half sibs to z there is nothing much more to learn about them . If they get just 1% of their 25 million dna database members to pay each month they will earn $2.5 million per month. It's not like they have done much to earn it either, thy are simply selling us the info they gathered from the test kits we paid for. They've been banging on for months about free 'features' to encourage collaboration but Pro Tools does the exact opposite and makes them a hefty profit into the bargain.

    Every decision to subscribe to any service involves a cost-benefit analysis. Certainly, Ancestry has records that are simply not available elsewhere, and many (most) genealogists simply have to access Ancestry's catalog. In my opinion, Pro Tools should be included in the subscription cost. It is certainly not worth the cost if you pay monthly.

    Great video. Regarding duplicates, Ancestry created most of them and now they want to charge more to take them out. That’s aggravating at best! You often must add a duplicate to get ThruLines to work. ThruLines shows the person is not in your tree when they really are. So, you add the person again to get down another level on your ThruLine and then go to merge the people. If you forget, then your duplication persists until you find it through some means. You sometimes you get dups when you merge in another users suggested tree content. Ancestry should be identifying such dups when they are entered. Right then and there. No wanting to charge you later to get them out.

    I have a brick wall prior to 1841 census. He was deported to Tasmania in 1829. No record of his death or anything after ticket of leave. He married in Penicuik Showing he was a soldier in Dumfries-shire Militia. No parents or birth place. On his convict record it shows him born Dumfries and 45 years old. Can find no birth for that name in Dumfries. He was also a master shoemaker. as all his sons were. This has been a block for 20 years. Can you give me any idea if it is possible to break down this wall

  • @Beaumont-Genealogy
    @Beaumont-Genealogy4 ай бұрын

    I am sure you have explored many avenues, but as you saw in the video, many of the people I researched had no baptism or marriage records. Did he have siblings or children that you can focus on? Do you have any other records confirming Dumfries? Single sources are problematic. Why would he marry someone from Penicuik, a long way from Dumfries? So, the two steps I would suggest are looking at the wider family and questioning everything you think you know. Genealogy is a maze, and sometimes, when you hit a wall, you must retrace your steps a little.

  • @sandrawright3234
    @sandrawright32344 ай бұрын

    Because he was stationed in penicuik it doesn't give a clue to his birth or parentage. Marriage only gave names and that he was a private in militia. and was deported before 1st census. I can't think of another avenue.

    Beyond siblings and children, have you investigated anyone else who was deported or charged at the same time as he was? People from the same area often tended to stick together when emigrating. I once traced a family member in World War One by finding people who signed up for his regiment at the same time.

    You should update this, because Ancestry announced (at RootsRech) that Protools will soon include something else: info on how our shared matches are related to each other. For many people, that makes Protools worth the price. It should enable us to figure out who some of our "mystery" matches are. That includes the ones that don't have trees, and/or those that only provide their initials, rather than a full name.

  • @Beaumont-Genealogy

    Absolutely, as soon as they release something, I will do another comparison video. I will include the MyHeritage Tool Set as well as they have improved their functionality. It would be interesting to see what Ancestry means exactly by Shared Match relationship because you can already do this to some extent via common ancestors, filters and ThruLines. As for people who choose to stay anonymous or don't post trees I am not sure how they will do this, so I am very interested to see.

    Very interesting. What was the error that Ancestry found that Family Tree Analyzer didn’t? If I know what the error it found was I can add that logic to the new version 10 for Family Tree Analyzer. Btw it’s a deliberate design decision not to edit someone’s tree in FTAnalyzer. That is because by making the user the sole arbiter of whether something should be edited or not they retain complete control over how the data appears in their tree and never need to worry about FTAnalyzer changing something they want to keep.

  • @Beaumont-Genealogy
    @Beaumont-Genealogy5 ай бұрын

    Thanks - the lone error that Ancestry picked up was a son born to a woman aged 13. I don’t think FTA needs to be changed for that, as FTA works before 13. Anyway, I would say my analysis was just a high pass. More to show that PRO TOOLS Tree Checker was very basic at the moment, and FTA (or RM) is still a far better option. I plan to do a more detailed error analysis when the new version of Family Tree Maker is released later this year between Ancestry, FTA, FTM, and RM. I was also planning to do a more detailed overview of FTA too - it is such a great (free) tool that so few people use or even know about.

  • @Kit_Bear
    @Kit_Bear5 ай бұрын

    @@Beaumont-Genealogy No, not the optimum way but it certainly acts as a deterrent for getting into debt in the first place. Samuel Pickwick did it on Principal, a protest as you will. Sam Weller did it out of loyalty to Pickwick. Now Mr Jingle/Captain Fitzmarshall was a deserving conman character Whom did deserve it and many of the time did deserve it. While I disagree with many aspects I also support many too, a balance if you will consider the effect of fear of punishment for getting into debt to begin with. I don't agree with the way it operated so a reform would be in order but I believe a reintroduction could be beneficial to reducing the dependency of those who are on a subsistence income. Debt management lies solely at the door of the debtor. Do they really need that latest Iphone or 75in Qled TV?

I say that because Ancestry has recently announced the release of ProTools (or something similar) which will be used to do some of the things that can be done with this free software. • @Beaumont-Genealogy

    That happens a lot and often it is an indicator that there are differences between the two people which need to be addressed. You do have to be careful not to add the same person twice which could happen. If there are minor differences and you (or your match) can correct them so that both people are identical the give ThruLines time to catch up. It could be something as simple a date written in a different way. So look carefully

    How many DNA matches would be enough to consider that a branch of a thruline is correct or can be validated? For instance, in your case from the video, your potential grand uncle has 3x DNA matches descending from his branch ... Would those 3x DNA matches be enough to make you believe that the green/grand uncle branch is another child of your great-grand parents? Because I imagine that a branch with only 1x DNA match is probably too weak to be validated as compared with a branch that has 10x DNA matches, which possibly would have too many matches to deny any relationship?

  • @Beaumont-Genealogy
    @Beaumont-Genealogy7 ай бұрын

    Great question - a DNA match is proof of a relationship but does not define the type of relationship that has to be done via research. So if all of 10 matched DNA are showing the same type of relationship (say 3rd cousin) then that is something you can research further but what if all 10 matches had copied each other trees (perfectly possible in Ancestry) and added in an incorrect named relative? You may think that this is a new person in your tree when in fact it is the same person you have but they have the wrong name. Does that make sense? So yes the more matches the merrier but I would still would want to confirm with my own traditional research.

  • @rotironwerks
    @rotironwerks7 ай бұрын

    If I understand your question, the number of matches is directly proportional to the number of testers as long as your records and sources match. Also you should consider each match relation to the other matches, ( not just you ).

Just want to point out that Ancestry tells their test takers that your results are what your ancestry looks like "hundreds of years ago". Problem is do they mean 200 years ago (1823) ? and yet they give everyone their Viking results - everyone with NW European ancestry seems to get about 7% Sweden and Denmark (trust me - I've looked at hundreds of these results) which would be well over 1,000 years ago and yet they do not give 1,000 year ago results for anything else but Viking. What gives you the idea these features are hidden ?

    I run a genealogy workshop and this video is based on what the attendees have told me regarding their use of Ancestry. Many (but not all) did not know of these features. Hope that helps

    Thank you… no explanation of this has ever satisfied me before. Must confess, I still wonder how the first day of the year could’ve fallen in the middle of a month… presumably, New Year’s Day was a purely notional celebration, rather than when it was time for a new calendar?

    Thanks. Yes, basically, it was March 25th because the Church had measured nine months back from Christmas and decided it was that day that the Virgin Mary conceived Jesus as foretold by the Angel Gabriel. So, it became a holiday (Annunciation or Lady Day) and eventually the start of the year.

    @Beaumont-Genealogy ahhh I was presuming that your reference to January 1683 FOLLOWING November 1683 related to some other error or aberration, but I dug a little deeper. So, yes, the year number moved forward on 25th March. Wow... weren't the Church responsible for lots of stupidity?! I have a link (you've probably been there actually). KZread isn't letting me post it... I'll try to get around that below.

    Wow, there is absolutely no way KZread is letting me post a link, no matter how I disguise it. Lol

    Cuba invaded by the Moors from north Africa!? Er, no. The Moors invaded Spain ( at keast by 2 different groups) . Spanish blood does not contain ( by any msjor %) moorish blood, however '10%' of a modern Spanish DNA has been assigned to jewish roots . Also, vikings or settlers from Sweden never invaded UK & Ireland. It was Norwegians & Danes. Please call me pedantic but having descent from both the aforementioned countries gives me some insight.

    Yep slip of the tongue on the Spain//Moors invasion- there was a pop up correcting that.

    I don’t want anyone in my family getting a DNA test. It’ll make it easier for the feds to find me for my past discretions.

    You're assuming that worshipping ancestors is a good thing! And you obviously have an affinity for generalizations and oversimplifications!
