Never seen a hammerhead so persistent. I know they’re aggressive but usually after a few jabs from an oar or paddle they tend to swim away. He must have been really hungry to be that persistent.

It did not punch you, it stabbed you, two different types of mantis, one that punches and one that spears, you got speared. If it was a punching mantis, it would not have drawn blood or gone through your water socks

to everyone wondering if it survived - I couldn't find a satisfactory answer on how a mantis shrimp breathes on land. While some crustaceans definitely breathe air just fine (we have land crabs after all), Encyclopedia Britannica says stomatopoda (the Mantis shrimp's order) have "gill-like outgrowths" on their legs. So since their respiratory organs are on the outside (meaning they need water flow to keep transporting oxygen to their blood, and the humidity isn't kept on the inside like in crabs) and Mantis shrimp spend the vast majority of their time in water, I'm guessing it didn't last very long on land. I can't blame the guy if he left it out. God knows I wouldn't dare pick it up again to throw it back 😅
