It's a shame that C&O 614 is no longer in operating condition anymore as this was a handsome and enjoyable steam locomotive to observe in operation. The C&O rr had an attractive roster of 12 J3 class 4-8-4 type locomotives and these engines were among my favorite types of 4-8-4 engines that were built by Lima locomotive works back during the steam era. I really want the 614 to be restored and returned to operation in the future as I really admire this locomotive.

You never know. A lot of people didn't think N&W 611 would ever come back after 1994, and a number of folks thought it was doomed again after Amtrak stopped allowing excursions out of Roanoke. Though difficult challenges were encountered, both times they were wrong. 611's return and ability to find new places to run on is proof that her C&O "cousin" may still have hope. I just saw the Greenbrier the other day in Clifton Forge, that old gal looked like she might have some life left in her, but time will tell.

Very bumpy and noisy ride on them bogies. Voyagers class 220, Meridian class 222 and CAF units built last decade are the evidence of that, although lighter compared to other units. But Turbostars still fast acceleration trains without them, is such a minimal difference.
@bb-3653 Жыл бұрын
@Buti Kimbo bombadier aventras have them now too. I think the turbostars are faster with the bogies is just the acceleration is likely maintained better and thus feel similar, but im willing to bet they get to max speed much better. they do look alot quicker off the mark than the older turbos imo. Even if let's say that it is true that the acceleration is really minimal , then that could be down to power output given to the units which perhaps are relitively similar with their weight. For example the lighter they are the less power given to balance out the reletive power output to the heavier units. If electrostar 2 had these bogies but were given the same power output as the first gen, there would likely be a massive acceleration difference given the bogies can give a 10 to 12 ton subtracted from the total mass. E.g 160tons minus 10 to 12 tons . considering they are supposed to make trains 10 % lighter. If they were then given the same power output as the heavier units , they'd likely maintain continuous acceleration alot better.

The 614 is parked in Clifton Forge, VA . I believe it was purchased by WV governor Jim Justice and painted green with gold trim. He planned to make trips from DC to the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV. I believe the liability was too much for the railroad to let it run on their rails. We can’t have steam trains, but the Amtrak just wrecked last month and it’s supposed to be safe.
