I started running in 2018 at 220lbs I was down to 160lbs two and a half months later maintained until 2022. Now in 2024 I have put on 100lbs and am trying so hard to get back into it but it is so discouraging the pain and exhaustion I feel. I have to remind myself to start slow like I did the first time. Thank you for the video, we are our own worst critics forsure.

I know I need to lose weights but I said to myself- I’m running for my general health and fitness - especially my mental health. I knew if the focus was solely my weight I’d get disheartened if I never saw change. I focus on how good it makes me feel . Some days are easier than others

I was never that serious about running, but 10 years ago I could run 2.5 miles in about 20 to 23 minutes, at a bodyweight of 145 lbs. Then I stopped running and focused entirely on weightlifting and over-eating. Now I finally started running again weighing 200 lbs (with a lot of abdominal fat), and I can barely do 1 mile in 13 minutes. 😫 My plan is to do 1 mile, twice a week. Then do it 3 times per week. I'd eventually like to work my way up to 5 miles, 1 to 3 times per week. But man, running at this heavier bodyweight makes such a difference!

Got these a week ago (ordered them a month and a half ago), haven't run in anything else since I got them. on some very hilly routs I don't think my heartrate has ever been so low and I think this is the only shoe I own that I would be comfortable doing a speed intervals session (3mins @ 3:30km/5:38mile/17kph x 10) one day, and a long run the next (@4:50-5-30min/km x 25), I'd still use Vaporfly or TakumiSen for race day half marathon sub 1:30, but It's an awesome training shoe and very comfortable, excellent foam, makes me wonder how good the pro is, and how good the elite will be.

Now I feel encouraged to continue with Maf-methods, because the issues you mentioned are understandable, yet avoidable. My performance seems to skyrocket since I try to run within aerobic zone, the mental changes are fantastic (I made a U turn and started looking forward to the next session, instead of to the next break within a session, which my body forced me to take), the physical issues seem to disappear abruptly, although I had them for two years and it was a long list, and for the first time in my life, just the thought of a marathon turned from 'way too much' , above and beyond 'tolerable' even up towards 'exciting idea'. I can resonate with this obsession to watch the heart rate, but I didn't turn into tyranny. I am not a failure or weak when I can't maintain the zone, because (in later sessions) it was never my goal to be perfect altogether, but the goal was to a) get experience and answer the question "how does that feel for you running aerobic?" just once, and b) use that experience to shape the next decisions around training. I was confused while running, like, "wait a little, what was important again? Being within the zone all the time? No. Perfectly? No. In case the rate contradicts my own feeling, what's more important? Feeling. What is the end goal of heart rate training? Maybe in the future, I can blindly run aerobic because I learned it with my body." And, by accident, I found out a) how to run a lot longer without feeling tired and b) how to spice that up in case 100 % slow-style is too boring (add intervals). I wanted to add speed work after a few days with heart rate training because going home after 21 km and feeling so confused because my body said I didn't really do anything felt frustrating. To cut it short: Be gentle with yourself, you don't deserve to be treated so harshly as if you failed at something of utmost importance. Be nice to yourself, ask your body and all other parts if some speed work could solve a lot of issues. Hope you feel better after two years, cheers from Germany :)

The problem with MAF is that, despite the insistence by Maffetone that it is a personalized plan, literally any plan that uses age as a measuring stick instead of actually finding the maximum heart rate and/or the threshold heart rate is based on an outdated hypothesis that is wrong for 35% of the population and wrong by double digits for 10% of the population. My max is about 20 higher than age suggests. That being said, when you mentioned several hard days in a row, I think that you may have swung the pendulum too far the other way. Arthur Lydiard took the advice of Pete Seeger that he got from Solomon that "to everything there is a season." Unless you have a lot of fast-twitch muscles or are focusing on a short event like the 800, you really shouldn't be doing more than one or two speed sessions a week in the peak building season, or maybe one plus a race in the main part of race season. Slow jogging helped me a lot when I got injured to try to find a way back into it, but come August, once I start to get back to a good weight and get this season out of the way, I'm going to switch to Lydiard training since my main focus is the mile and 5K.

@@BrendonCammthanks for the reply! I’m 42 and my Vo2 max is 39, but I’ve only been running consistently for just over three weeks. I’ve run on and off for years but never with consistency, so this gives me hope that just plugging away towards that foundation I need, will really help. I think there is something about your body needing time to learn to build the appropriate biological support as well; CNS, lungs etc . I’ll stick to consistency and see how I get along. Again, huge respect for turning it around like you did, you literally turned your life around and that’s no small feat 😊

To answer the question of the title from my perspective: You will see progress in a week or less, ONLY if you have started eating clean and probably self cooked food. The running it's just an extra so you lose the extra calories, hence the extra weight. Other benefits are of course building endurance and getting fresh air. But if you don't fix your eating habits, when running, you will probably get even hungrier after and gain more weight if the caloric intake is more than what you spend by running.

1.) reframe mindset. Most start running when overweight. Better to shift your identity to a runner who is overweight. This will build confidence of being a runner not an overweight person. Runners come in all shapes and sizes 2.) take baby steps. Go out for a short amount of time and stop even if you think you can go longer. If you push yourself you’re gonna be soar and crampy. 3.) proper footwear. A lot of foam, will compress and protect your joints. Start low and slow and with proper gear 4.) find a quiet a street, not wanting people to see you. Embarrassment from the jiggling and sweat. Limit exposure 5.) prioritize recovery and mobility. You’re likely in a sedentary lifestyle so body may be tight and not moving. Get proper stretching routine before and after run.

Hi Brendon. I found your channel this morning and love it! I'm an unhealthy 62 year old man who has hated sport of any kind for as long as I can remember. I have COPD, osteoarthritis, type 2 diabetes and am bipolar (so lots of medication). In September 2023, I decided enough was enough. So far (up until) March 2024 I have lost 34lbs in weight. For some strange reason, I want to start running! I have made an appointment with my Doctor to make sure my heart can take it. I weigh, as of yesterday, 238 and a 1/2 lbs. Would your starter recommendations be the same for someone of my age and lack of physical exercise? Many thanks Dave UK

Hi Dave! Wow, congrats on the great progress :) Definitely best to see your doctor to see what they say. But if they give you the go ahead, I think starting out easy and very slowly adding in distance and speed is the best way to get into running for most people. I recently took a break and then got back into training and I actually took the same approach! I feel it's universal :) I hope everything goes well, keep up the great work!
