Okay, I don’t fly GA but I’m interested in doing so someday. Is anyone else completely fascinated by the fact that they just randomly decided to fly to a major airport, didn’t file a flight plan or anything but rather simply took off, trial and errored their way to the right approach frequency, told the controller they wanted to fly to John Wayne and the dude is basically just like “yeah straight in to runway 20L have fun”? Like, how? If they were told “sorry, the landing slots are booked solid for the next three days with airline arrivals” I wouldn’t have been surprised. John Wayne is even limited in the hours planes can take off and land. How was any of this possible? Does my surprise feel hopelessly naive to the pilots here?

very good advice to always monitor when there's a segment or command change with automation! letting the airplane accelerate at climb power for a minute or two on level out is also good technique to maximize performance

Good point. My IFR instructor would freak if I spent 5 seconds doing a quick final check once on the runway. At the time I didn't push back against his rushing me. In retrospect, I should have.
