Board Game Dad

Board Game Dad

On this channel, I provide rules overviews and reviews for board games. I'm launching with a series, "Boardgames with Dad" where I put a special focus on game that I play with my (young) kids and the modifications I sometimes make to the rules. This channel is perfect for the board game enthusiast/dad!

ThePerfectBoardgame.com scores games on five categories: theme, mechanics, strategy, luck, and complexity and helps fans find similar games based on matching component scores.

    It great to see these collaberative/co-operative games that are easy to teach. A great way to introduce people to the fun of boardgaming.

    You don't review a theme based on if you like it but based on how well it's incorporated. The theme in Root is 10/10, it oozes out of every crevice of the game. If it's too cute for you that's ok but don't say it's poorly themed.

  • @theperfectboardgame
    @theperfectboardgame4 күн бұрын

    I’m not thinking about how much I like it. Mechanically, this is just asymmetrical area control. What exactly is the theme?The artwork is thematic, but I count that towards its component or artistry score. I do think some of the expansions added more thematic elements and I do think I underrated the vagabond on how it impacts theme.

    Yo, theme is a 9. This art style started a genre. This video is a year old and I’m still tilted 😂

  • @theperfectboardgame

    Art, to me, has a small impact on theme. For example, if I play chess using super Mario themed pieces, it doesn’t make chess more thematic: it’s still an abstract game. Mechanically, Root is just an asymmetrical area control game, hence the low theme score.

    If I don't realistically see myself playing the game in the future, I gotta get rid of it to make room for something that I do see myself playing.

    Here's the crossover in the hobby, some people seem to collect games just to collect games, not to play them, it's almost two different hobbies lol

  • @theperfectboardgame
    @theperfectboardgame5 күн бұрын

    I think Kickstarter projects play a big role in the emergence of this variant of the hobby. It certainly intensifies the fear of missing out.

  • @cubsnextyear17

    The biggest factor to the bad purchase thing is most likely Kickstarter purchases more than reviewers. It really stinks having to make a decision on a game that isn’t even complete yet a year or more before you even buy it.

  • @theperfectboardgame
    @theperfectboardgame5 күн бұрын

    Haha. And of course, the two games I listed that I haven't played were Kickstarters. I was excited when the campaign was running and ran out of excitement by the time they finally arrived. (Admittedly, that doesn't mean the games are bad, but it doesn't bode well for finding things you KNOW you like.)

  • @cubsnextyear17

    For myself it is usually a game that has a similar feel to another game I own but I would always choose the latter. Examples would be I got rid of Ankh because I would always choose Blood Rage or Godfather. Got rid of a couple of Zombicides because Marvel Zombies is just so much better. Also got rid of Mansions of Madness because Death May Die is just a much better overall game. Another factor is complicated games with bad rule books. Star Trek Frontiers fits that category.

    Of those games you listed, the only one I have played is Blood Rage(!) However, I think I nevertheless know what you mean but I congratulate you on ACTUALLY getting rid of those games and not just let them collect dust (like me!)

    I try to only buy games I plan to keep... Those games which have fallen flat... it's usually do to being too random (and can't be fixed with a house rule), or too complex and/or lasts too long to actually get to the table.

    I would encourage you to watch a couple of Artis Opus videos on dry brushing. It can work fine for any size model (though that particular brush was rather too large for the subject--you can get smaller ones cheap in a makeup set), but what you appeared to be doing in that part of this video was more like stippling.

    We bought Eldritch Horror around 10 years ago & played once with some friends who visited, then never again.... until last week we pulled it out & played with my brother. It's one of those that's just too tedious to learn and teach, we have no one who would play it with us again, it's too many pieces, and just not worth it at this point in our lives, having no real game group. Time to ditch it.

    Eldritch Horror was my gateway game into Hobby games in Apr’20 and still a Top25 for me. I agree the learning curve is a tough one, but I love coops with family and playing this with them during COVID became a source of fond memories. Still, it doesn’t get played much thanks to setup/teardown being brutal.

    Praga Caput Regni is a game I’ll likely keep permanently despite only playing it once solo. I’m apprehensive of trying to teach it and the art design of those city tiles will scary off my wife. The resource wheels on player boards and action selection rondel are wonderful design choices though. Now I regret not playing that one more.

    Yeah now that our kids are old enough to play some cooler games with us but not old enough to have a long attention span... and they are our primary gaming buddies, we just don't have anyone to even try getting into Eldritch Horror with. It's one I'd be willing to play at a game night with more serious gamers if someone else owned it, but at this point, it's just taking up space on my shelf.

    This has been the primary game of my group recently. Totally brilliant. To answer both your complaints simply (which I have no doubt you already get): this is a Euro. If you want something that prioritizes theme (which this game does overall quite well), Euros aren't for you. The mechanics of removing level 1 tiles and removing boats after the first age are crucial mechanics that create very interesting strategic choices. While both are admittedly odd if you are thinking logical about theme, they make perfect sense in terms of game play. Really good review.

  • @theperfectboardgame
    @theperfectboardgame6 күн бұрын

    Thank you. I play Euros almost exclusively, but there are examples of Euro games with mechanics that are supported by thematic intuition. For example, in Agricola and other Rosenberg games, two animals breed and make a new animal. Four wood makes a four-sided fence. Etc. I Brass, mechanically, the costs and benefits make strategic sense but it is easy- EASY! - to miss the fact that someone’s crates don’t require beer to ship. I almost wish there was a big red exclamation point on the tile or something. The symbology in this game is subtle.

    There are unlimited ways to paint minis and all of them are better than leaving them unpainted. If you have very less time: prime them white, wash them black and then wash them again with a color of your choice. Takes less then 5 minutes and your plastic minis look as if they were carved from a piece of stone.
