    I used to do that as well! Then my mentor showed me that he does front to back, and it helped me to gauge the values a bit more accurately. I found that when I started with the sky or distance everything was appearing a shade or two darker than how it looks in the landscape. Seems like different orders of operations work depending on what our tendencies or reasoning are!

    Good job, great location, I'm doing many of the area now too, from photos I took when plein airing there a few years ago, near bell rock etc.. Nice you held back on the saturation of the sun light on rock. it's a "rookie mistake" to overdo stuff in the background of a painting since it is a painting and not a photograph, so you need to have some depth in it. Stuff in the distance that is too bright messes up the depth and makes the entire painting look too "flat", you avoided that, good one! One thing, nice to have a small break in the foreground trees to provide a lead in through the scene.

    Can you tell me what colors of paint that you use to achieve these colors? I am really struggling with color mixing to get the colors that I want, especially to hilite where the sun hits the rocks.

  • @lydiagatzowart
    @lydiagatzowart17 күн бұрын

    @@reneekroyer5104 my palette is pretty much warms and cools of the primary colors! Titanium white, cadmium yellow medium, cadmium lemon yellow, yellow ochre, alizarin crimson, cadmium red light, cadmium red medium, ultramarine blue, cerulean blue hue. For the highlights of the rocks I basically add a bit of yellow and white into my red rock mixture, which is typically red with a bit of yellow and ultramarine blue + white. The reds and yellows I choose depend on if I’m pushing a warmer temperature or cooler temperate which shifts a lot depending on what’s closer or farther away, whether its in light or shadow! Does this help? Let me know if you’d like me to clarify anything further! I think I will try to film more color mixing in future videos ☺️

    Values were really well done, same with saturations showing atmosphere. Why didnt you push the bright orange on the very background hill, just curious, it works great the way it is. And the foreground grasses are beautiful and I like them how you did it. A lot of folks would overemphasize the light as being the only important component of the composition and would have maybe taken the grasses a shade darker, maybe two shades darker, just to keep the lights and darks totally separate. But the greens to mix are gorgeous, and I like the more realistic portrayal, speaks to the energy of Sedona -John

  • @lydiagatzowart
    @lydiagatzowart24 күн бұрын

    Hi John! Thank you so much for this feedback! I held back from the saturation on the background hill because I didn’t want it to take away from the light hitting castle rock. I actually ended up pushing the saturation on castle rock a little more even when I got home, which is a good lesson for me to be a little more bold next time in the field! I could have taken the value of the grasses down a notch, I may play with that a little in the next sunrise scene. Thanks for pointing that out! I do feel that the shadow area here was a little more mid value to dark range, morning light feels a little less contrasting than sunset, so I wanted to maintain that softness. The foreground shadow seems to get darker as the light drops further down….if that makes sense😂 thanks for watching and pointing these things out!!!❤🎉

    Good comment, yes, it's a special place, Sedona, and not just for "channeling the energy of the universe" through your body to reach some higher state of existence. I often thought I could make a lot of money there setting up an "institution" for the channeling of dark energy and matter. No one else is doing it and since astrophysicists say it apparently holds the whole universe together from flying apart, people could use that in their own lives, so they don't fly apart, occasionally, just saying!! Just Kiddddding!! Actually, they could just go out and paint, and that will help a bit in their lives too!! LOL ;D

    This looks great. I learned a lot from watching it (painting the intensity of the rocks was super hard for me when I was in Sedona in April). Couple quick questions to help me please... 1) Can you show how you like to mix your greens sometime? 2) Can you push the top layer of the teapot to be more cad yellow-ish (maybe just desaturating with a warm white, pushing the value, and pushing towards yellow more that way?). I dunno, just brainstorming on things I might try in my own version of this place. 3) I think the temperature shift here of the light is perfect. The light on the clouds is not too yellow, so suggests a midday sun that's cooler, and the same cool light is obvious on how the highlights on the red portions of the cliffs is mostly lightened with a cool ivory white and only a little cad yellow too. Awesome. 4) Would you show a slowed down video of how you paint just a single tower from start to finish, including all the last hightlights added? I want to learn how to make them so voluminous (great use of color mods to create form) -john.on.the.road

  • @lydiagatzowart
    @lydiagatzowart24 күн бұрын

    Hi John!! Thank you SO MUCH for your amazing comments and questions here! I really appreciate it. I will absolutely create a video focusing on the modeling of a single red rock feature or spire, as well as mixing greens! Those are great ideas for future videos. And the key to painting Sedona for sure! You can totally push the yellow of the top sandstone layer, but because those cliffs are pretty far away and atmospheric, I wanted to grey them down more using a violet mixture even though the light is hitting them. Keeping things in key and pushing the atmosphere, but I’d be curious to see the result of that! It may mean adjusting the surrounding colors a little to make it work! Hope this helps…happy painting!!!❤❤❤
