A 13 foot Boston Whaler is a reliable off shore boat with a reliable enough engine. You're fine as long as there are nearby vessels to assist in an emergency.
Too far
"How Far Offshore Can I Take My Boat?" That depends on what you want your life expectancy to be.
THANK YOU ! This is an excellent video. Even though a reasonably experienced skipper, it's great to refresh on safety. Great job here 👏. 🇬🇧
Been out there crossing the atlantic. Only boat proper must be bluewater sailing boats.all other boats less than 40 meters better not try crossing longer seaways.😊
“Vessels large may venture more, But little boats should keep near shore.” ― Benjamin Franklin, The Way to Wealth
.........half way
Actually the real quote is "if anythings gonna' happen, its gonna happen out there". Let's not dishonor Ron Rico now come on!
Sinking is fine if you can pump water out faster than in comes in.
HAHA. Thanks!
Around 6:30 the chick in the middle blows that up right in the guys face 🤣
LOL
@@theboatguy9175 great informative video, btw! When I saw that, though, it gave me a good chuckle
This says logical things, but the use of shutter stock could have been more cordinated
90% of accidents are caused by human mistakes? I'm thinking 99% :)
Good point.
Sea anchor should be first on list for offshore safety, but 90% of boats dont have one
Excellent point. Thanks!
Know your wheather report or stay home.
Weather is one of the biggest risk factors. Thanks!
Also keep in mind, what most of the world calls a hurricane, typhoon, malstrom, is a small craft advisory in Alaska 😂
Great point. Thanks for sharing this fact.
"How Far Offshore Can I Take My Boat"? How far can you swim?
Excellent!
Until it runs out of fuel!
That's one way to find out!
Excellent video!
Thank you very much!
The worse are people that see a boat as a drinking floating bar…. The sea, lake, and river can all test a marine to the death…. Learn your ship, this is not a bar, it’s a lifestyle…
Great point
How far offshore can you take your boat? As far as it will run until you run out of gas!
Good point!!!
Going to take my 19ft Mako 70 miles from Key West to the Dry Tortugas and back in May of 2026.
Let me know how it goes!
Great video thanks for the useful info
Glad it was helpful!
Not here to waste time watching your video. Just let me give me your gas card, boat and 4 trips out. Then I will give you a definite answer.
Thanks.
I go right out to the point of no return, then turn back. In the USCG you have to go out no matter what.
Yea, the Coast Guard have a tough job no matter how you look at it.
NOT TRUE. When conditions are so nasty the CG lives would be at stake they stay in port.
This is a pretty easy question. The answer is "half way". (Keep going past that point and you're getting closer to the other shore).
Good point
''Boat Basics'', not how far can one go...
True
Check the weather and If in doubt don't go out
I find the biggest issue out on the open water is the weather. Great comment.
I find what I'm out in the water it's ballast vs. beam when you are a drift, broadside to the slop
If you have to ask the question! The answer is boat and skipper are not seaworthy!
Great point!
You hit everything! Impressive.
Thanks for the feedback
💩 p
I have a very simple answer here, You can go far as the weather allows, You can go as far as your fuel can take you, most importantly you can go far as the helicopters fuel can take you back. I shoot you not I was 15 mi offshore fishing and a pontoon boat came putting by me asking where the fish were.
I can't imagine taking a pontoon boat that far out!
@@theboatguy9175 yeah I was tripping when I saw it, dude had an impressive beard I imagine he had big balls too, Not too sure about the brain
Good video. Terrible title. There is no answer to the question in the title. Title should read "Things to consider when deciding how far to take your boat offshore." This title is clickbait. Before anyone says the answer is in the video and that you have to use judgement, don't. That is not my point. If you put this question in your title you should give an answer in the video.
Thank you.
No worries!
You never actually want to find out the answer to this question.
Good point!
What's considered a small boat like 30ft and less or what?
There's no official definition of a small craft. Most of the captains I know consider anything under 65 feet to be "small".
I took my 21’ boat offshore routinely 50 miles. Mostly by myself. Had a few close calls and went through many storms. I had an eprib onboard and a good radio. No cells back then.
Wow!
Fabulous
Thanks for the feedback!
Always have a small outboard backup in case your primary blows. Especially when far off shore.
Great idea. Most of the experienced captains I know recommend having two engines.
Can you is less important than should you.
Excellent point!
We were two miles off shore the other day on my captain’s 48ft novi boat. That’s when I figured out he had his hydraulic system ratchet strapped in to keep it connected to the power take off on his Detroit diesel. In about five seconds I realized my captain was dumb as fuck and even a 48 ft novi boat can quickly leave you in a dumb spot.
Great lesson to share.
That happened to me in the florida keys at night time on the reef! 30mph wind and a lil rainy my boat is only a 19ft key west and i can tell you it was scary
We've all had moments like that!
The audio is very sensible. The video is bizarre. Illustrating a VHF radio with a shot of a cellphone? A bow shot to illustrate an upgraded or backup bilge pump?
Thanks for the feedback. I'll update this video one day and make these changes.
The boat at 0:37 is an open-deck pontoon boat? Really?
Oops!
Always push you boat just that much more. Sail in bad weather and high winds. You will make it. Try going out at night in storms. Always buy used batteries for night cruising; you don’t need new.
Sarcasm is a good teacher!
If you have to look at a KZread video to figure out if you can go offshore in your boat - don't get behind the wheel in any conditions - go take a power squadron course before you get on the water at all - PLEASE!
Great point - training is always helpful.
Bingo!
I run a 16ft starcraft out of AC. I regularly run 35 miles offshore. Size doesn't matter. Skill and prevention is everything
I agree - experience and skill make all the difference.
I would say as faar as half a tank of fuel would take you.
Time to get a new narrator this one has a anoing voice. Skipper !
Good content, but why is a he all the time, their are many great females Captains and regular everyday moms mum's etc. Could the writer have written them, their, I know those words have a couple of extra letters but, We us Females are out there.🤣
Thanks for the feedback and suggestions.
This is so Stupid. It’s Amazing people watch this. If you own a boat and need to watch this, sell the darn thing. The most common sense things gets the most views Lol smh
