I was about six years old when this episode came out, and didn't fully understand what all the controversy was about, but I vividly remember watching with my (single) mom when it debuted. She just about died laughing at the end when Murphy dumped the truckload of potatoes on Quayle's lawn, and I couldn't figure out for the life of me what was so funny, lol.

Like many of the commenters below, I lived through this and at the time my then wife and I were pressured into a marriage that probably shouldn't have existed. See if THIS was the route they went with in regards to Mustang's character arc, him not only having to deal with the fallout of his anger leading him to burn an innocent woman to death, and learning to control himself to remain focused and vigilant and less impulsive, then it would have been a far better arc than what we got instead. Instead, we got Edward Elric proselytizing to Roy to try and not murder the single character in the show most deserving of it

Being from his hometown, I understood what he was trying to say. The 70s and 80s used sitcoms to imitate life, rather than entertain...unlike the 90s and 2000s, which took a less heavy handed approach to current events. Quayle grew up, as did I, in a small town with the importance of the nuclear family being emphasized and valued. He saw media as a platform to teach what should be, not what is...as the media is glamorous to the average person. Having worked over half my life in entertainment, I personally get disgusted at the Kardashians, MTV's Teen Moms, Shameless, and other programs centering on harder subjects. Unfortunately, society is not made up of people clever enough to see the downside of these lifestyles, but only see the glamourizing of it. Afterall, we were stuck with an idiot of a President...who wants to run for office again, because the entertainment industry glamorized this man, until his ego and followers put him up against a politician as evil as he is stupid, which got him elected. Then these same people, who stroked his ego, complained about his being president. I was working on a show, which glamorized a family of drug dealers, when the election took place. Every person, who complained about the outcome, was greeted by me with, "So, who won season 4 of 'Celebrity Apprentice'?" They would answer the question and then say "Why?" They couldn't even understand how they had contributed to the problem about which they were complaining.

i remember a bumper sticker from that era, "hate is not a family value". i think largely due to the right's culture war against gays, took reagan 4 years to mention aids, while thousands died... one reagan staffer said to laughter, it was the "gay plague". 38 years later that same party is going after trans rights, poor people, immigrants, disney, a whole host of companies and individuals for "wokeism"... still punching down as a political ideology... and yet they're still in power...

  • @danbev8542

Society and Republicans have been blaming women and mothers forever. Remember them blaming mothers for people being gay? If a girl got raped, or, God forbid, gave in to natural impulses, and got pregnant- it was always HER fault & not the sperm donors’. “Welfare mothers” who have children so they can collect the “enormous” amounts of money the state gives them! It’s important to punish women for getting pregnant by forcing them to have the babies. Deny them birth control, and abortion. Never mind the untold suffering by the mothers and the CHILDREN who are born into poverty and deprivation.

Ah, I remember this well. The baby was the season ender, this episode was the following season starter. It had huge ratings as you can imagine. The situation was surreal. The country wasn't in a good place, Quayle wasn't considered very bright by many, and he decided to pick a fight with a fictional tv character. Media talking heads actually began to debate the sort of life Murphy Brown's child would have as she was educated, wealthy, and had access to all the help she wanted. They discussed how hands on she would be, if she was too old to have a baby, and why she wasn't responsible enough to use birth control at her age. O but at least she decided to have the baby. It was wild. It was as tho they needed to be reminded Murphy Brown wasn't real, lol.
