I'm doing a bit of necroposting, but I can't stress enough how useful was this talk. I'm currently doing a project for college about ADHD, and I stumbled upon this while searching for material to work it. I was also diagnosed with ADHD not long ago, so everything you said resonated with me, even 10 years after this. Thanks a bunch.

I intentionally procrastinate studying for my physics even though i know it's destructive. It's miserable. I'm going to see a cbt specialist. I've been struggling for a couple years now and stagnating in engineering school. Hopefully i will graduate as an engineer. I doubt it at this point. I thought i would outgrow my adhd, apparently not. I also thought perhaps this was all nonsense and an excuse for me being dumb even though when i was young i tested just below gifted. Perhaps that test was inaccurate and I'm actually too low to become an engineer. Both outcomes are possible. Hopefully the therapy will help, because i have been cycling the same failing patterns over and over again. Time to try a different approach. Wishing you all luck who deals with this shit.

Thank you. I'm 23 but I've never been formally diagnosed. No one around me seems to be like me, at least none of the people I admire. I've made numerous audio recordings and notes I've never listened to or read, been constantly late, been chronically disorganized, and have a tendency to just wing it. I've always hated myself for it. I think you're the first person I can both admire and relate to.

I’m currently in my 1st semester of university and this spoke to me… I got diagnosed at the end of my last year of high school and meds changed my life. They gave me so much motivation and the power to be able to turn my education around, I still failed high school but I was able to complete a tertiary course that got me into uni, where I am now. During that course I was getting straight A+ (aside from 2 assignments where I got an A!) and I couldn’t believe it. But here at uni I’m barely scraping by, I’m doing much worse than I was before and I’m failing tests and assignments. I’m filled with so much anxiety because I’m trying to get into medical school which requires excellent grades, I keep looking back to me during that course and thinking “what’s wrong with me? I was doing so well”. This video made me realise… during that course I was living at home and the class size was small. My lecturers knew I had ADHD, were so kind and helped me, my classmates and I all knew each other and would all go study together after class, I’d go home and my mum would be there to encourage me and make sure that I studied at the dining room table until dinner (was my own goal, she just made sure I stuck to it), every time I felt like I was unable I had a community of people there to motivate me and hold me accountable. But for uni, I’ve had to move to a new city, living away from home with 500+ people in my lectures and with hardly any friends in my degree. The only support I have is my alarms that I ignore and the impending doom of failure which sits heavy on my chest until the due date draws too near. It’s not just my meds, it’s the things around me which help, and now that I don’t have those I’m struggling. At least now I know that it’s not me just being lazy, it’s that I’ve lost a whole bunch of coping mechanisms and support which worked with my meds. It’s scary, but I think I might have to reach out to those around me and ask for help, because I can’t go on alone. Thank you, I loved this talk!!! Now I have to go back to studying for my exams 😅

I'm an ADHD millennial who graduated hs in 2004 and is now teaching at a university. I wasn't diagnosed until I was 31 yo. The difference in conversations about ADHD between the noughties and now is almost total, it seems. Growing up hearing adults disparage and deny the reality of ADHD has given me some trauma and mental tension about it which I think severed me from possibilities of looking into it much sooner. This is something i know a lot of you can relate to. It's really nice to see how positive the conversations about ADHD have become in the past few years. But still, employers need to take it way more seriously than they do.

Thank you for watching. I was diagnosed at 34, 24 years ago. At the time there was very little information about ADHD in adults. I did my own research and started writing about my experiences. Now there is much more information. Another thing to consider is that the down playing by parents is complicated. Some of it is about protecting children from stigma. Some of it is about how it might reflect on themselves as parents. But, there also may be some guilt at not looking into it or doing something about it sooner. I am very public about my ADHD because I think it is the only way to meet stigma head on. But I also have the luxury of being an attorney who represents children with disabilities. It is an asset to me at work. But that isn’t the case for most adults on the job. I’ve written an article about ADHD on the job. If you are interested in reading it you can email me at [email protected]

I just commented on Brigette NP's Video I am undiagnosed with ADHD I have MS since I was 17 and just attribute my scattered mind doing twenty different things at once (believing I am being productive cuz I can get a few things done thinking its better when its not) then forgetting what I am supposed to do and blaming it on that disease when I know deep down there's something more going on; its so frustrating. Definitely appreciate you mentioned self-torture I didn't realize it at the time but doing self-sabotage seems to be a thing lately. Not proud to admit that. I really want to do design and be an entrepreneur but I am still trying to figure out what career or what I love that fits the way my mind works/ what I can handle etc. If I do indeed have ADHD which I immensely feel I do but I still want an objective medical opinion. I feel that my mind is so scattered I asked her if she also struggles with short-term memory loss because I cope with this by digital hoarding but then I end up spending so much time trying to get digitally organized on top of this ha (: it is kind of a vicious cycle. More like a hot mess that I keep ignoring that is getting worse at 27 now.... but I digress. She was showing great advice and tips on how to live a healthier lifestyle to make the ADHD work for you and not against you if you want to not take the medication route.

Oh dear. I was diagnosed with adhd in October at the age of 34. After struggling with my bachelors degree for 10 YEARS. sure, I switched school, had 2 kids, was diagnosed with depression that I had for years, and finally it all makes sense. I just can not manage exams. The subjects are so fascinating and I just couldn't let go of that. I know that I am smart. I get it, but I can't deal with the time limit during the exams. Time perception way off 🤪 and stress leads to blockages during exams. So I fail everything the first time I write the exams. Now I will be thrown out of my uni because I failed chemistry a second time, with half a point. I wish I had known Earlier to gain more knowledge about my brain and have the tools in place for me showing what I am actually capable of. Too bad the university here just keeps the system where people like me can't thrive and contribute.

Amazing Robert. Just amazing. I’ve not heard someone talk about the wet blanket paralysis thing we get when a deadline is looming in such a great understandable way before. I’m a physio with add. High functioning like yourself. Similar iq scores in those areas. I am also dyslexic too. I’ve found my girlfriend helps my life tremendously with routine and keeping on track. I really struggle to prep for interviews and get so nervous. Thrive off kinaesthetic and visual learning. Trying recently to stop being so hard on myself and self-tortuous, k is my limits and take time with things but it’s hard when you have passion and drive in excess. Also a beautiful poem. I have shared with my girlfriend who is soon to be a clinical psychologist.. who would predicted she would be with me! We truly are brilliant in some ways, just misunderstood. Finding someone who takes time to understand you both and work and in friendship and relationships should not be overlooked.

Thank you for watching and for leaving such a detailed and heartfelt comment. We all struggle very similarly, but also each in our own way. In addition to adults like you appreciating the same struggles, I get many parents commenting that it was helpful to understand the frustration from their child’s perspective. If you would like a copy of the poem, you can email me at [email protected] and I will send you a pdf.

21, I'm not diagnosed and haven't met with a therapist yet, but I really identify with the videos I've seen of "How to ADHD" with Jessica McCabe. I was always called out for daydreaming and spacing out in class, and would somehow always lose my sweater or lunchbox as a kid. Also, homework was an endless struggle no matter how old I got, it would take hours to do a simple task that probably would take 15 mins tops on a really focused day. I feel like I had learned to mask these symptoms by the time I got into high school mostly. But in college, I'm finding that I can't keep doing what I've done during my school years, it's not healthy or sustainable to continue like I've been. So since then, I've been researching things I can do and I'm building the courage I need to go to a therapist and talk about it. Through the algorithm, I got your video suggested to me. Thank you for going out and lecturing about this, it lets people like me find more information and know that we're not alone.

I was still in denial when I started watching this (Got diagnosed a few weeks ago). But at the end, my life experiences, thought processes, and systems are too similar to yours 😂 It’s funny that you mentioned planes because at my lowest point, I thought maybe if I switch careers to air traffic control or some urgent services, I might soothe the hyperactivity in my brain and be tired enough to be sleepy at night. It took me years to realize how I operate was not the norm and have the courage to ask if something was wrong with me. I think this was just the thing I needed to end my grieving period. It’s an understatement, but thank you so much!

I literally thought I was the only one who did this 22:07. I passed my Criminal Justice class with a 97 A LOL! My son who's is ADHD I notice our systems was the same. All these years I was being treated for bi polar instead of ADHD.

Thanks for reaching out. I hope the presentation was helpful. I am not a doctor and can’t diagnose anything, but I like to articulate the things I struggle with. It resonates with others going through the same or similar things.
