    Got an accidental hook up on a carp. Ole winchester1235. Got it in on my 6ft broken off tip on my 3 wt st croix. It was a hoot this morning. There's no drag trust me. Made a memorable day and released within 15 min. But hey, it's all on preference and it's more the user than the reel. Keep on fishing, tight lines. Reddington makes good stuff. Few folks will not own anything but. 🎣. Don't count out those medalists 1494 by pfleuger. Best drag I seen on a reel to date. Why I will not change. Buys lots materials when your out lol. I do love all the new reel designs over past ten years.

    I do as well, I am excited to try out the Cheeky as well, it feels so smooth. But I know I do have a big reel expose coming up, actually 2. First, I pulled the trigger and bought myself a high end rod blank for myself, my fist 1k +. Rod when it done, and I don't think a cheaper reel will do it justice, so a Ross or a Battenkill is where I am leaning. The second is, I need another salt reel. My son talked me into a Tarpon trip, and no going that distance and that expense without a backup, or two.

    Love a good bamboo. Use paps often. Check out golden witch bamboo. Lil salty. But not thousands. I learned one thing it's not the price of the rod it's the person using the rod. All jokes aside. I caught more trout in the past on a cheap Walmart rod than I have with my st Croix that's got a broken tip. That I will repair. And that cheap rod caught more trout than my orvis. Flax linen is high end. Lots stress they can endure. If it's your thing, get the plastic out respectively. Tight lines is all we need ✊🎣. Keep building bro keep building

    I agree, fish with what works for you!. I got Into a discussion with my son last month when he was in town fishing. Is it the rod , or the technique that I am still learning after all these years why my casting has gotten better, or both? I say a bit of both and add in being able to afford the better line to match the rod. It is all fun though. Tight lines my friend, and it is the qualify of the experience, not the size of the fish that counts.

    @@EmdeCustoms amen. There is a lot of good and bads with fishing. It's all fun and a experience. And it's just more than a sport it's like an art. Oh that vision of that movie A River runs through It. But anyways. Hey glad you had fun with your son fishing. Line matching the rod yes is critical and a fun learn. I caught away from Monofilament for regular fishing. And I will admit. I don't catch a lot of fish. have a lot of days skunk Ed. Had a lot of Misses the other day. I've been out probably 15 x, 3 netted n released. It was very fun. And then we got our bad days. You cant have the memories sitting on the couch lol. I like you learning to build things what have you. If you don't play you don't learn. Hey what's great is when you create something and folks love it and enjoy using it that's greatness. Fishing not fishing, duck hunting or not. Building a homemade pool table. Sky's the limit and ideas likewise. Have fun, experiment. I have overcast in many times. And caught that fresh fly on that bush across the stream 🤣🤣🤣🤣. And it really sucks when you can't get over to it. Hello side chuckle to this one. I could have cross the Little foot bridge out on this farm to get to the other side and on tango that fly that I tied up. It's still hanging there 😭🤣🤣🤣. Hey what was really funny was after about almost 2 hours just tinkering off and on with my cast. My last tie on was my last stitch effort. Then home, I figured I'd try to get to fly another day lol. It might be sketchy and if it's a loss it's a loss lol

    I’m still trying to figure out wtf a blank is. Is it basically a mold blank for casting the rod?

  • @EmdeCustoms
    @EmdeCustoms3 ай бұрын

    Blank is the the bare rod. The process To make one involves, using carbon fiber or fiberglass with resin, rolled on to a steel mold, and put under vacuum. The physical process is not difficult, just expensive to purchase the equipment to do it, and then there is the engineering to design the correct action. Hopefully that helps?

    Hey man, any tips on someone who wants to get into fly fishing? The fly fishing is great over here in Oregon, but I have no clue how to get started

  • @EmdeCustoms

    I would first look and see if there is a local Trout Unlimited chapter near you and go to their meetings, you do not have to be a member to go, as well as check your local fly shop. The local shops often have free basic classes on casting and what flies to use and rig them. Anglers Covey, one of my favorite fly shops has basic on the water classes for a small fee, and will teach you enough to get out on your own. Feel free to message me with any more questions. You can have a happy medium but I guess it on what your fishing. But def rod got to fit you right I would guess. Then Also I guess it's on the user being each has own taste. Line weight n such but I can't see A rod do it all. But have seen n done myself use diff line weights. Not always ethical as we know. But being a builder, you would know best. Good post tho sir! You got viewers. Yet very few w their open opinions. Yes, lol I can see that over few vids n no comments..interaction is medicine. Words unspoken is words unheard. Old trait saying for about 48 years lol.

    Sometimes me just rambling my thoughts, I do believe in the theory of initate the uninitiated, and we can all see things more evenly. Often more times than not, I am the one learning.

    @@EmdeCustoms that's a good way to look at it. My old wise tail kinda goes like this. We not learning nothing if we not doing a thing. I learned my new rod reel Walmart special is nearly on fire. And no time flat I was catching trout yesterday for first outing. . Nice wild browns. So it paid off getting rid of old stuff I repaired few times over 26 what ever years and learning new area on stream I not explored past 3 years. But building rods is def a learn trait no doubt. Keep at it. We humans not by choice is capable to learn multiple things in a day. That array can be vast at best. Weather teaches things daily too lol. Old dog new tricks aye lol. Btw. I enjoy the chatter. Ya don't get much and that's a learn and now you are. 😉

    Not a bad pricing. Considering buying the blanks and materials and a little bit of time to put it all together. Make your homemade jigs. Money in the pocket. I watch a Buddy put a rod together within 2 hours no jigs about 26 years ago. Still uses it today. Stunning. Keep them customers happy! Good content you got

  • @EmdeCustoms
    @EmdeCustoms4 ай бұрын

    Yes, jigs help, but only with making sure the guides line up. I have found that measuring someone our on arm length gives a little better feel for the person who orders a rod, especially when it comes to a rod mainly used for streamers. Nothing more frustrating than having the last guide placed just an inch to far for easy pickup of the line if it gets dropped and you are in a money hole. Placement of the guides is rarely the same.

    @@EmdeCustoms I agree on tips n such. Ever use water markers. Comes right off and simple to lign up guides. Providing yes using a straight edge. It's old old school method. Semi tedious. But no mistake. Clamp devices what not yes do aide in way rods being built more so n such than the old school ways. Gotta be fairly fluent mechanically lining up wether 2-3 or 4 section blanks. Can say it's interesting running into you n what your doing. Much respect to that. Long ago young like wise lol. Almost gotten into making own bamboo rods. Salty the equipment and yep. Never got to be able get what was needed n that ended that. But do admire folk like yourself n what your doing. Fun hobby or not be doing it. Def be interesting to see your content. Stay strong at it n the passion while at it. Was out on wild stream n what a early start to the year. 3 wilds but one flipped out net quick. Had phone ready n back in the drink quick w a net rescoop lol. Very few done that n a ooops unfortunate lol but did well n unharmed. Tight lines sir!🙏💯🙏

    I really want to get into fly fishing but quality gear seems to be so expensive. I wish I could find a nice decently priced used combo or something. But my only experience with trout so far is Lake Erie steelhead. Would love to make the trip out west to check out the ocean run steelies and cross that off the bucket list.

    Start with your local Trout Unlimited group, I am sure there is one close, Also, keep in mind, you can fish any species with a fly rod, which is becoming common for those in the big Trout water areas. You can only catch so many trout before you look something more challenging. I commonly fish for Large mouth, small mouth and crappie on the fly rod with much better success than on traditional tackle.

    Ready to hit my rutherford rock . I named it after something my grandfather done. It was a special place for him and I know where it is at and I have never fished it yet. But I took his bamboo fly rod and that old antique Winchester reel 1235. Add caught my first wild Brown not far from the house. West Reading PA. Got my license a little late but my mind is going to get out real soon and I was out yesterday checking some spots buy driving past and I met at Old contact and hung out a few hours. Spent about two and a half in his vehicle and then he invited me to his place for a short. Great day it was and I am soon anticipating to get out. Sunshine moved out of the home area to the other end of the county I have been blessed after many years 30 what have you to catch a wild Brown. 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 in little baby ones. Such a cool little thing. But I catch you most of my trout on my orvis Clearwater which has become my favorite ride because they're catching my first wild browns on that as well. Cool video
