  Hi Chris! It’s great to hear from you! I hope all’s well with you and yours. Barbara and I are well. Two weeks ago, the tenants moved out of our house and we found that they trashed the place. I’ll save you the details... Besides, it’s been two full years of living in a home with wheels and it feels good to be home with things I’ve missed: inside living space, long hot showers, not having to monitor power consumption or water usage, garbage pickup, toilets that flush, and mostly my workshop. I don’t miss this heat though! It was 96F the other day!

  Good day. I have a dw317 and I was wondering if you could do a simple test for me. no video required, just a response here would be fine. My 317 jumps all over the place as I'm cutting and it appears as though the upper lock (which locks the blade) is able to move in and out (axially in the direction of the motor, not side to side). If you face the front of the saw towards you, the ring/level just under the dewalt logo is the one I am talking about. Can you tell me if you are able to pull that entire locking piece towards you? (in and out?) I think that it should be secure, as in it should move up and down freely (as that is how the saw works) but it should not move in and out in the direction of the motor. Apologies if this description isn't clear. Thanks for looking. I'm just trying to figure out if I should buy a new saw.

  The blade holder moves loosely forward and back as part of the oscillation feature that sweeps the blade forward during the up-stroke. This is normal. Cutting radii sharper than the blade wants to go will cause the blade to bind and make the tool bob up and down. Also, try holding the tool a bit toward the back, toward the power cord. Press down and steer the tool somewhat toward the back. The cutting action of the blade will hold down the front.

  No video on the final engine assembly and start up? I assume you opted to forgo filming and narration for the sake of "getting it done". Thats completely understandable. There were probably a lot of odds and ends that needed addressing. I have no idea how people get anything done while trying to document what they are doing. Hats off to you guys. Thanks for posting!

  I have not had much success w/JB Weld. Its very brittle with little tensile strength and does not drill or tap very well. I have had improved performace from it by mixing in a small amount of regular old fiberglass insulation. Not too much or it turns into a clump of crap that you cant do anything with. It seems like that will stay together for awhile. Looking forward to first start and test run on your bus. Thanks for posting your random repairs. I enjoy watching them. You probably dont know it but you are probably better than the guy you were talking about.

  That’s about the nicest comment I’ve ever received! Thank you so much! That’s a great hack to use fiberglass insulation for reinforcement filler. I’m definitely going to try this one day. The creeper is basically a total loss so whatever life I can breath into it is a win.

  I would have found a bushing that fit over the stem of the caster and then epoxied the bushing into the creeper hole. And put a big washer above and below the bushing. But your fix seems to have worked.

  Thanks for the kind words! Yes, I made all the cabinets. Most of the work is documented on my channel. The refrigerator cabinet and the way I came up with how to secure the refrigerator and ventilate it was a big win. I built the lithium battery too. That took a lot of learning but saved me a lot of money.

  It’s a 2007 Thomas C2 on a 2005 Freightliner M2-106 chassis with air-ride rear suspension. I used Sherwin Williams automotive single stage paint.

  I’ve seen the same Freightliner M2-106 with Cummins. The bus is a 2007 model. The chassis is 2005. I would have preferred Cummins. It had only 30,000 miles when I bought it. It looked almost like a new vehicle when I got it.

  @@hakunamatataadventurebus5944 I'm very sure that someone at FL knows exactly what it would take to put a 6.7 in that chassis. I'll bet the ECMs for both engines are programmed the same. Maybe just need a different connector to use the Cummins engine. If you had a wiring diagram for both you could compare. FL dealers can be very helpful in this regard.

  I have a tip for you. I suspect your old engine was killed by coolant in the oil. I would keep a close watch on the coolant level with your new engine. If you have any doubts about the engine loosing coolant, loosen the oil drain plug before you start the engine up (after it has sat for a while) and drain out a litre or two of oil into a clear vessel and put the plug back in. Leave the drained oil sit for an hour or two and then look at the bottom to see if any coolant separates out. If the oil is clean, add it back to the engine. If there is coolant in the oil you have a problem.

  @@hakunamatataadventurebus5944 I'm not a tech but I have lots of experience with diesel engines. Oil samples are good but they take a week to process. It is pretty simple to crawl under and take an oil sample and check for coolant before starting the engine up. Used to do this on CAT engine that had a tendency to have leaking injector cups. And on older DDs with leaking liner O Rings. Coolant in the oil is a disaster for the engine.

I like how you did your cabinetry. You were really smart to tackle the engine yourself. And purchase the gantry to get the engine in and out. It would have cost a fortune to get this done at a dealer.

  Hi. I've watched all of your engine videos thus far. Things aren't making sense to me. How is the head cracked and warped ? How is the crank bent ? It is almost impossible to bend the crank without bending a rod. How was your engine over heated ? Was it losing coolant ? As I said in another comment in the last video, I suspect the rust was from coolant in the oil. Did coolant get into the combustion chamber and crack the head/bend the crank from borderline hydrolocking ? Was the engine smoking white from coolant ? Was it using coolant ? Something doesn't make sense here. I'd pressure test the EGR cooler before running it on the new engine.

  When I bought the bus, the aluminum radiator had damage to some tubes that looked like they were welded. I didn’t look closely enough to this repair job. It was JB weld. Shame on me. There was no coolant usage or steam/water out the exhaust. It ran perfectly while driving all over the US in 2022. It turns out I was very lucky I made it back home. I should have had the oil tested. Again, shame on me for not doing so.

  @@hakunamatataadventurebus5944 If it ran good it would have been very hard to know there was damage. Do you have an oil pressure gauge ? The oil pressure probably dropped whe the cam bearing exited the block.

  Amazingly, the oil pressure was normal. There was no indication of anything wrong with the engine. No coolant consumption. No oil consumption. I luckily found the mangled cam bearing during an oil change. There was metal flakes in the oil filter. This was the second oil change since I owned it. The first oil change was before my travels and there were no parts found in the pan and no metal flakes in the filter. The cam bearing failed during my travels in 2022. The second oil change was done in early 2023 to prepare for further travels. That’s when I discovered the damage.

  The bearing journal did not rust because of sitting too long or not changing oil often enough. Diesel engines can sit for a long time with no ill effects. I suspect that your engine had coolant or water in the oil. I don' t know anything about these engines. Could be a leaking oil cooler, head gasket, injector cups, etc. "Cranking up" the engine after sitting will not cause the bearing wear you are seeing. I just found your video series today. I would have repowered your bus with a Cummins 6.7 rather than another MBE. Yes it would have been more work but there was no explainable/reasonable reason why your engine should have failed like that. Absolutely intolerable. You need to be very careful to find the cause of the leak and make sure it does not wreck the new engine.

  Thanks for this info. I really do appreciate you taking the time to post comments! I found the head gasket showing evidence of leaking, warpage in the head, probable cracks in some head intake ports, and the crank has runout beyond spec. It appears the previous owner overheated it.

  @@hakunamatataadventurebus5944 Engines don't overheat for no reason. A bus like that has lots of radiator area for the HP. I suspect that something went wrong and it lost all the coolant. Probably into the combustion chamber or oil. If a rod wasn't bent the crank was probably fine.
