Thanks for this! I am having this exact problem, on a similar Pentair system. Gonna check that union ring tomorrow when I have some light to work with.

This was SO incredibly helpful. I've watched a lot of KZread videos trying to troubleshoot this problem and this was by far the most helpful and informative. I feel totally empowered to solve the problem now. Thank you!

Can these leaks cause a big suction loss ?

  • @ringoliverpond965
    @ringoliverpond965Ай бұрын

That suction side 3way can draw air as well, a bad glue joint, crack in housing, crack in lid, leak at the seal plate or even a loose drain plug on the wet end. FYI.

If you live in a warmer climate year round, a fiberglass is the way to go. If you live in an area where you experience all four seasons, you should do the vinyl liner pool for they are equipped to handle the harshness of winter way better than a fiberglass. It all depends on how well you maintain and take care of your pool chemistry that will determine the life of your liner. It could 15+ years before you change it.

Very informative minus one thing else to consider that I just experienced. In Jason's video you can see there is a 3-way valve on the suction side of the pump where the skimmer and main come together prior to the pump. Typically (as is with mine) it is a PENTAIR 263028 3-way diverter valve. Inside that valve there are three o-rings. One of these can be missing, torn or worn and will allow air into the system stopping the pump from priming let a lone operate normally cycling water through the filter. I bought an o-ring kit for my valve on AMAZON for $7.53. I can use a tool without harm to myself so I made the simple o-ring replacement myself. If you decide to DIY, then be aware of the valve position when you disassemble it and use proper o-ring lubrication. Otherwise the o-ring will just deteriorate and you will be back at square one.

How do you handle ledges on the fiberglass pools? It seems with these big ledges they have sag, even to the point where when the pool is arriving on the truck you can see twists and obscure areas of the pool even before installation.

The other thing is the actual pool cleaner. I have a zodiac "robotic" cleaner. The issue that no one mentions is that they have a tendency to climb too far up the walls whilst cleaning and therefore suck in air from above the water line.

Jason so pouring concrete deck over top the gunite bond beam and up to the form attached to the tile.. I understand there needs to be a separation of the deck and the top of the gunite shell so when the deck moves it doesn’t take the tile with it? How is this accomplished? Thank you hope to hear back from you

Ok. So how do you keep the handle secured? What if its loose, or it has a little wobble? What do you do if its secured in the bottom of the pool and both the anchor points are loose?

Many recommend silicone-based grease on gaskets and seal rings, such as at the union you fixed, and on the O-ring under the lid of the screw-on top of the pump basket, and on any screw-in drain plugs that might have loosened or which don't have a separate o-ring and depend on the grease for a good seal. Thanks for a really great video; it is still the best after being made and posted 14 years ago.

The unit heats up fast and is super quiet. It looks fancy kzread.infoUgkxl8Od2BvnGbn1ffwqsuFXW0QnmcZgMiVY and can be kept in the living room. It gets hot within a split second of turning on the unit. The build quality is exceptionally good and is safe to be around kids and pets. This one is super quiet and can be kept on while in office meetings, my wife loved it. It shows the temperature right on the unit which is very useful and adding a rotating feature helps to heat up the surrounding, so other people will not fight with you for heat. It is right as described in the description..!! Definitely recommend!!

Another way to check where the air leak may be is to run water from your garden hose over each connection for like 30 seconds and if the air bubbles disappear that tells you where the leak is.

Great vid, I might add to check the weir doors to verify a leaf isn't stuck in there keeping it from operating correctly...its happened to me and it stopped water from flowing into the skimmer correctly which caused it to suck some air.

I am currently dealing with cavitation on the same pump you have. I will try checking the tail ring O-ring as I have already replaced the lid ring. If it is a suction side leak how do they determine that? Wouldn't I see water coming out of the ground? Thank you!

  • @Fred_Durst1

I’ve just discovered recently that if I intentionally allow air into the pump stream it infuses oxygen into the pool.. This infusion greatly reduces the need for oxidizing chemicals as the oxygen takes the place of them. It will also allow you to reduce alkalinity without affecting ph. I only do it sporadically by loosening the pump basket filter lid slightly and allowing outside air to be drawn into the stream where the velocity is the highest. You have to keep an eye on it because if the pump shuts off it will leak water.

I fought with my pool for the entire 10 plus years I lived at that house. Old property and the pool was probably built in the mid 50's. The bubbles were ever present an after a few days, the pump wouldn't move water. Some kind of air lock thing. I could usually backwash and get it going again. I understand the mechanics and knew the bubbles were coming from the suction side somewhere. The pool vac hoses were constantly failing as was the head of the unit. The n the old black bottomed skimmer was suspect so it was replaced and. It worked for a while. I replaced all the old black plastic pipes that I could get to. That helped for a while. The longest I was ever able to keep it going smoothly was a few weeks. It was my hobby and my nemesis for far too long..

Good video. But your claim that an air leak prior the pump intake is the #1 cause of bubbles could not possibly be correct. It is only your observation that it is the #1 cause because most people intuitively know to check the water level and strainer pot lid before calling a pool technician to diagnose the problem.
