Financial Awareness

Financial Awareness

My mission is to bring Financial Awareness to the forefront of your daily decisions so you can compound your financial literacy, increase your net worth, & improve your quality of life.

All conflict is a result of expectations not being met...and I aim to set your expectations appropriately with the stories I share.

Subscribe if you are interested in any of the above.

My Past: I've been involved in people's financial decisions for 15+ years (7 yrs Real Estate experience & 8+ yrs as a former Financial Advisor)...my goal is to bring the financial successes, mistakes, and best financial habits to you that I practice and have learned from other successful people I’ve met.

Although these videos cover topics of personal finance, your personal financial decisions are just that...personal. By no means are these videos intended to be financial advice for your unique and personal situation.

I stumbled across this video while looking at your other more recent ones. I know this is over a year old, but in case someone finds it later like I did I felt like I should comment. My wife and I decided to tithe from the beginning, while we had very little, and were still getting out of debt. It was, and is our belief, that everything we have belongs to God and that we should give back 10% of what is rightfully His. This is not a "holier than thou" comment, so please don't read it that way. But, I will say I truly believe God blessed our faithfulness during those harder times. We didn't ever get a windfall of money to clear our debt, but when some moments got really tough, overtime opportunities would pop up. I truly believe those overtime opportunities were blessings He gave to get us through those tough moments. Not a blank check, but an opportunity. Now that we are debt free (minus the mortgage) and both have great careers we still continue to tithe each month, not because we have to, but because we get to. Sorry for the rant, just felt led to share. Thanks for the content.

What if i plan to drive alott. With a high priced vehicle?? I dont understand why you say more miles is better for standard method? Is it not the same deduction when i write off gas receipts, vs standard method of tracking mileage. Im trying to find what method i should use. I figured the expense method until you said high miles is better for standard. What am i missing?

Backstory: there was this doctor on twitter that, unknowingly, motivated me to upload a video a day for a month…I made 38 videos in a row (daily). This video was one of them. Watching it now a year later is weird - lol - I love the concept of what I was trying to do here, but my God my voice is so pitched! I do not believe I speak that way normally irl, but I believe it is clear and evident that I’m a father to daughters and I speak differently and more softly around them. I cannot help but make fun of myself for sounding so high pitched and soft. 😂🤷🏼‍♂️ It’s amazing what women will make a man do. Haha!

I was doing this ROTH conversion strategy, until I got 1099s from my investment comany, and those havecto becreported on federal/state taxes. I was moving quite a bit (to me) of money, which then shows up as a dispersement when moving from traditional IRA to the. ROTH. This was really hurting my tax liability, to where I OWED several THOUSANDS in taxes due to this strategy. Wasnt worth it more me to do it.

So let me ask you this: isn't one of the benefits of the pre-tax 401k (besides tax-deferment) is that you then get to take those tax monies saved and use those in order to create a larger 401k balance, thus creating a compounding effect even faster? It's like using the money that the government is going to get in order to make yourself some extra money.

Hello, thank you for your video? Can you do this as well with your 403b? I have a 401k and 403b from previous employers that I want to roll into my IRA. Also, sorry second question. Can you roll it ALL over at once? I know the contribution limit this year for trad IRA are 7,000, so will rolling over incure penalties or is rolling over separate than contributions. Thank you!

Amazing video, A friend of mine referred me to a financial adviser sometime ago and we got to talking about investment and money. I started investing with $150k and in the first 2 months, my portfolio was reading $274,800. Crazy right!, I decided to reinvest my profit and get more interesting. For over a year we have been working together making consistent profit just bought my second home 2 weeks ago and care for my family.

How does it work if I have a 401k at a prior job that I have left and want to move the 401K to a Rollover IRA in a different brokerage firm? I already have a traditional IRA (in this brokerage firm account) with zero dollars in it as I use this traditional IRA to do back door Roth conversions. Will opening up a Rollover IRA negatively impact my ability to use the traditional IRA for future Roth conversions?

Great video! I recently declined my advisors because they didn't respect my request to not upsell their insurance, they also were filling in forms for me over Zoom pressuring me to sign, and when I refused sending it to my email with a time cap. Even if you know nothing, please go in with full confidence and YOU call the shots, this is your money that THEY need not the other way around. There's no time limit on learning, you do things when you are ready and if the vibes are off do not be afraid to make them just as uncomfortable as they make you with their pitches and say "You're not a fit". It will be awkward but hey, I'd rather have that awkward 5 minutes over years of dodging sales calls. You have wealth to build not other mouths to feed. My advisors said I wasted their time, and that response only told me they didn't value me and saw me as a sale, not a person, our time is of equal importance. Had they kept their greedy mouths shut they would have had me for life, some people tell on themselves when you let them ramble.

Ok I formed a business this year. I have a former landscaping truck which is a 91 R30 that I want to use to tow cars to part out online. Horrible mileage, high insurance, high maintance cost. But it is a tank. I also have a 87 V10 that is my auction/scrap truck. I plan on using both of these only for business and my 3 other rides for personal. But the 87 burns about as much oil as it uses in fuel. Would a engine swap to a newer engine be a full or partial deduction if using actual.

Zero chance I’m touching that question! 😂 Def want to speak with a CPA in your area for this. My initial reaction is…how are the current vehicles titled/owned/being depreciated? Are they in your name with zero depreciation on them now or did you write them off with your landscape business? It is my understanding that you can only write off a vehicle for one business. So, if you wrote off your vehicle with your former landscape business then you might have $0 basis already…if that’s true then you’ll need to inquire if “an engine swap” is sufficient for a vehicle to be reclassified in some way…if the vin never changes then I’d say the engine swap would be your new basis of value that you added to the vehicle and as such that’s all you may be able to depreciate/deduct. If you’ve never written off the vehicles personally via 1099 or through your old landscape business then I think you’ll have less issues moving forward. Appreciate you checking out the video. Cheers!

@@Financial_Awareness Yes I have a CPA to run this buy. Never hurts to get a outside view from another one. I bought the landscaping truck outright from a landscaping company. Just giving you a visual of a 7000lb old flatbed truck that was previously used for hauling sod that I want to use in my business for pulling cars on a trailer behind it. That one is ready to go minus the expensive plates and reg(it just sits currently). The other 5500lb truck has a custom bed meant for making hooking ratchet straps etc to easier for uneven loads and is only a 1/2 ton. Good for uneven loads like scrap or furnature. But that one needs a engine soon as it burns a quart about every 100 miles. This other truck gets about 30% better mileage but a engine swap could increase that to 50% over the 7000lb truck. While the added fuel used is a write off the excessive oil consumption of lets say 120quarts bought/used over 14k might raise a red flag. Oh and no emmisions or vechical tax on storing rides in my state. If they hit the road they of course need reg/ins.

That’s a really great question. Must be more to it than just math. 🤷🏼‍♂️ When my wife and I were in that situation ourselves we made it a high enough priority to pay off debt “fast enough” to where it didn’t impact our long term investment strategy for retirement. (The shorter it takes one to pay off said debt the lower the exposure to the opportunity cost of earning 7-12 when debt is at 3…so timing must also play a factor into the decision process…prob a bad idea of this is a 10+ year debt pay off schedule vs say, 18-24 months) Also, real estate mortgage approval process…qualifying…with less debt on a credit report the more a person could leverage to buy real estate…so “if” a financial plan already has enough stock market assets being pumped into it and they want to pivot to real estate….having less debt helps to when borrowing more at scale. If done correctly, the returns from real estate should offset the loss in time (opportunity cost) of funds not being invested at 7-12 for a few years vs only getting the return of the debt being paid down….which is only a 4-9 spread from your example of 7-12. Lastly, this also rarely gets recommended by FAs because they don’t earn a commission from selling/buying real estate AND also earning a % of AUM…so this would have to be initiated by an FA with the heart of a teacher OR from a client that expresses an interest in investment real estate during a review/chat. Appreciate you checking out the video. Cheers!

Under the context of that mindset, you are correct. …but it happens…and people do it…and more. Imagine a higher income than what you have now. Imagine the order of what you would do first for your family/yourself. Now imagine how long it would take you to arrive at that point…are you willing to see it through for that long? Now imagine some people have been doing exactly what you’re doing and even started at a worse position than wherever you’re at now…and ask yourself if you have the maturity, stamina, and determination to see through a financial plan long enough to make it happen for your situation. My wife and I are 6 years into reaping the benefits that took over 4 years of planning & sacrifice & $210k of debt. If you’re willing to sacrifice and do something to improve your situation…then $400 a kid is not impossible…you just haven’t mapped out your plan of how you would do it yet…and others have. You’re probably capable of accomplishing much more than you’ve been challenged to do thus far in your life. I bet you could do $400/kid x3…only a matter of how long it would take to get there and if it’s a high enough priority for you. Really is as simple as that. Appreciate you taking the time to check out the vid! Cheers!

You were not a financial advisor, though. Within the first minute of the video, you revealed that you did not obtain the Series 7. You were an insurance agent or broker who was able to sell mutual funds and do fee based planning, but you were not able to sell individual stocks, bonds, and options.

You’re not wrong. No argument. Best way to respond would be to say: ask my clients what I was to them…and they’ll tell you. IMO, I was a higher quality financial advisor to those I worked with. I simply got referred to so many people that weren’t even able to pay down enough debt & put enough into retirement that I was never able to find traction and gain momentum in the HNW people arena. I tried to “prospect up” and work with higher income/asset clients, but I was more successful in making a larger impact on “normal people” that weren’t overloaded with a boat load of non-qual money that also had the risk tolerance for individual stock positions. …but I most def was a FA. Appreciate you checking out the video! Cheers!

How important do you think internships are going into this career? I’m a Veteran who separated and I’m fast tracking my college education, so I don’t really want to take an entire summer off for “work experience.” Is graduating with a degree in finance, plus customer service and military background enough?

You need a financial advisor only if you want your money stolen from you.

Just one thing to say to a financial advisor. “You’re fired!” They are all crooks.
