    hoping you see this ASAP, but i'm struggling on the claw on the tip, i don't have foam.. not sure what to make it out of or how to fit it so the wing moves okay still. any suggestions?

    If it doesn't have to be strong or last in high humidity,, Crayola model magic, if it has to be strong, then Fimo or Sculpey ultralight clay would work. You can also cut and glue cardtock, or even heavy felt.

    This is super helpful and exactly the resource I was looking for. I’m trying to make a possible crow stuffed animal and I wasn’t sure how to do the wings, but if I imitate the bones and joints with wire I can just put the feathers and stuffing around it and it will bend realistically (in theory). Thank you!

    NGL, that looks incredibly uncomfortable. I mean, it's a cool concept, but I can't imagine you'd be able to walk around in a costume that includes these stilts for more than just a few minutes at a time.

    Can you make a square hole that makes a square stream of water?

  • @gryphern
    @gryphern3 ай бұрын

    My thinking on that is you would need enough energy to keep your water moving in the direction it was shot out of your die/outlet, such that you overcame surface cohesion. My gut answer is yes but it would probably be a dangerous flow. You could fake it by having water fall from high to low out a square outlet, in a large enough formation where cohesion would not create a round flow, it would be a lot of low pressure water.

    I was looking on the internet for Amoco latex there were so many different varieties I wasn't sure which would be best to make skin on foam. I also saw a 3 1/2 gallon bucket of latex that is added to a floor floor leveler for installing vinyl floors $15.00 I might have to run some tests

    Amoco liquid liquid latex and acrylic paint for colors? I wonder would a powdered tepra paint do well with the latex and flexibility?

  • @gryphern
    @gryphern3 ай бұрын

    Tempra powder will work, but you have to mix the bejezuz out of it. Liquid is nice because it mixes immediately. You would have to a add a LOT of tempra powder to weaken the latex. And as this is natural latex , not silicone, the final object won't last forever.

    At 18:44 you remove your inset and make the bird bigger, then redo the inset... if you had left the original inset and made the bird bigger would that not work?

  • @gryphern
    @gryphern5 ай бұрын

    The insert between the glass would have grown with the bird, so there would have been larger gaps that would have been filled with solder. A big wide solder joint can be quite pretty if you are trying to create a certain look but it is also physically weak. The closer the glass is to touching with just enough space for the foil and solder, the stronger the item. Almost everything I make out of stained glass needs to be structural because I do something crazy like mounted in a window or put it on a mobile, so I try to keep the gaps between the glass pieces exactly the right size for foil and solder. I'm hard on my art.

    Where do you pull the wing to go up

  • @gryphern
    @gryphern Жыл бұрын

    You extend the wire. That can be pulled on your thumbs through your sleeves, or in this case by standing up tall.

    Why is the line going to the foot to wing

  • @gryphern
    @gryphern Жыл бұрын

    Any length is fine - you have the distance between the pull point and the end of the cord, which we can call distance one. Distance one is just how far away the pool point is from the wing, maybe you have the wire going through a tube or the wires loose outside the costume attached the person's thumb with a loop. The second distance is how far you have to pull, this is important if you want to trigger the Wings by straightening your knees or making a small motion with your arms. The further away from the wrist of the wing you attach the wire, the longer you have to pull but the easier you have to pull, this is the lever effect. If you put the attachment of the wire close to the wrist joint on the wing then you have to pull very very hard but you only have to move a couple of inches. The distance between the pull point and the attachment point on the wing is our distance one and then the amount of pull you have to create to move the wing is distance two, added together that will give you the total distance of wire away from the wing joint.

    It is going from foot to wing so the wing will flip open when our wearer stands up tall.

  • @gryphern

    I can do a pair now in less than an hour, I can use a CNC paper cutter to cut the paperboard without a knife. If you use a knife, it will go waaaaaay faster with a pair of scissors/shears to cut the long straight parts. Online, some people even use fine wood band saw (power tool) to cut the paperboard! If you are doing this by hand, expect about three solid hours start to finish for the first time to you do this. If you have a friend with a laser cutter or large format paper cutter, you can have them cut your wing frames for you, saving on hand cramps!

    Great video! I finally feel as though I'm learning how to do this. I have a couple of questions... at 5:07 you finish outlining the bird, but then when you come back at 5:10 the bird is sectioned into pieces but you don't say how you did that? Also, how did you get the dotted outline around your photo? Mine doesn't have that. Thank you kindly.
