Lapsed rhythm gamer here. I dropped by my local Round1 (Another sign of my boomer-ism, I didn't realize that it was a Japanese company until I climbed the stairs and went "Why are there so many imports, claw and rhythm gam- ohh...) to try and see an arcade because I've been doing bodybuilding for a while, but years of bad habits (don't smoke kids) have scared the cardio out of me and I wanted to do something that didn't have me run on a treadmill or run next to a stroad at 100°F. Jumped on a PIU machine and was surprised that I could kinda still keep up... for a while. I'm stuck at ~6-ish on PIU for the time being until I get some stamina and groove back, but I just threw down enough credits to last for a while. Also, DDR locking anything harder than basic behind e-amusement is sad. I'm out of shape, but today's 8-foots are ye olden days 5 foots. Nothing speaks to my soul like giving up on some ridiculous step chart.

Can you use a rock band controller?

This game is unfortunately an abject failure. It failed to capture players. In Japan it was so bad that some arcades set this game to free play in hopes to drive up interest and even that was a complete failure. The mechanics of the game were too convoluted, it suffered the same issues like with Beatstream.

Getting my Sound Voltex controller (a trusty SVSE5, gonna upgrade to a Faucetwo soon) ended up being a great call, as in addition to K-Shoot/USC it can also get the job done for a bunch of other games of that type. Use mine to also play Muse Dash and Project Diva, and could probably use it for Taiko and Clone Hero drums in a pinch. Experience wouldn't be 1-to1 on those last two, but if you're just looking to practice and want more feedback than shadowing then there you go. So yeah, don't hesitate to explore what games you can do with what equipment you have.

Back in my day, 2007-2008, with the incredible thrill of playing GH3, I played sitting down and strum with my left toe and play with my right hand using just three fingers because I was born with one arm and partially developed right hand. I had a great time and played around the Hard/Expert level. One by Metallica in particular was very challenging towards the middle of the end with the constant speed strumming then that solo on top of that! Talk about exhausting! Don't let anything get you down in life!

Kinda pissed that after COVID the only arcade chain that had SDVX in my city just went kaput. I got into it a year or two before the pandemic when these new machines came in and I tried it out with the homies. I kinda pivoted to Project Diva during the pandemic but I still want to go back to SDVX. I'm waiting for my friend to buy a Pocket Voltex controller to see if I'm gonna invest on controllers to play it again.
